I would like to wish everyone, 2 and 4 legged, a Happy Memorial Day! Nothing says that like a couple of flags on your head…or at least that is what mom was telling me when she took this photo. I am not so sure about her ideas sometimes but I usually just go along with whatever she suggests to keep her happy! I am a clown by nature so not a problem for me to look foolish!
Inbetween all your picnicing and other activities, don’t lose site of the real purpose of Memorial Day – to honor those that serve our country. People are out at the cemetaries with flags and flowers, military personel are being
honored today all over the world, but what about the military dogs? My friend Juno from facebook posted this great memorial photo. Our neighbors that moved away 2 years ago had retired bomb sniffing dogs. He worked with the military training dogs and then brought some home when it was time for them to retire. Now, mind you, I kind of poop in my fur when I see a big German Shepard Dog coming my way, but their 2 dogs were some of my best friends. They were so well trained and so friendly! They did not even get mad if I stole their toys!
Police dogs and military dogs give their lives for
you humans and they deserve a good life themselves. When they retire from service they really deserve a nice home. Because right now many of these hard working dogs do not get a nice retirement life there has been a bill introduced to help set them up with a decent retirement. In order to better recognize the contributions of America’s military dogs, the ASPCA has introduced Bill S2134, the “Canine Members of the Armed Forces Act.” This Act will reclassify Military Working Dogs as “canine members of the armed forces” instead of “equipment” and will institute programs to assure their health and well-being after retirement from service- all without using federal funds. Please help us honor these wonderful dogs by contacting your Senators and urging them to cosponsor this Act. For more information go to: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/112/s2134
Since the only thing I can really sniff out is wabbit, I am going to just enjoy the holiday with my sister Katie and good friend Buddy. We are having a nice picnic with bowls of cold water and some nice organic bones. Had mom started training me at an early age I could have been a detection dog most likely but I am happy with my life as it is and thankful for those dogs that do the tough jobs!
Happy Memorial Day!
Hey Emma, Jet here.
Thanks for your post honoring those who have served our country so valiantly. We posted last week about the same bill, thanks for doing the same to get the word out. 🙂 http://heyitsjethere.wordpress.com/2012/05/19/k9s-equipment-unacceptable/
Happy Memorial Day!
Dearest Emma! You make me so proud my friend. Thank you for highlighting our fellow canine service dogs and that very important bill. I did now know about it, but will get mommy to contact our senators here in VA.
Love you & your Mommy!!!
Happy Memorial Day, Pixel
Hi Y’all,
How y’all doin’? Just stoppin’ by for a visit. Hope y’all are having a wonderful Memorial Day.
Y’all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
Great post! Good to know about that bill. I knew dogs had previously been classified as equipment but thought there had been greater strides to care for them post-retirement. Thanks for letting me know there’s more to do for these wonderful dogs!
