Ten years ago today is a very special day in our family! It was on this day in Germany, 10 years ago, that mom adopted my big sister Katie the Kuvasz. Katie was 9 weeks old and 15 pounds of white fluff, often mistaken for a polar bear cub. I know, I am only 5 so how can I post about this – well, that is easy, mom and Katie are always telling stories about life before me so I feel knowledgeable enough to write about it.
Mom had her dog Trine who was 9 at the time and loved her to death but she always wanted a second dog. On this particular day it was decided to go and get a second dog. She went to the Augsburg Tierheim where they had a dog that she thought she wanted to adopt. It turned out to be one of the most awful experiences of her life. Mom knew about animal shelters in the US but had never been to one in Germany and she was shocked! This place was a dirty mess, the caretakers were not friendly, it was very sad. The woman got the dog mom thought she wanted to adopt and it was terrible. The poor thing had had its ears cut off, tail cut off and was very aggressive towards women. There was no way mom could help this dog as it was well over 100 pounds, in bad health and mean. She had to leave because it was all just too much. There were some white puppies in the paper about an hour drive away so she decided to check them out and that is where she found Katie. Katie was the only female that was left and mom fell in love. In a short time Katie was in the car on mom’s lap for the almost 3 hr ride home. Trine met Katie but was not really interested and continued to ride home in the back of the car. That was pretty much the last of Trine’s alone time as Katie just loved her big sister! Unfortunately, just 14 months after Katie arrived, Trine passed away from Pancreatic cancer – Katie was then an only dog for 3 years until I joined the family.
Now, Katie and I are sisters and I love Katie so much, sometimes I really get on her nerves but I can’t help it. While looking for photos for this post I was able to show Katie just how much she used to be like me with her big sister Trine. Mom says that Katie did everything Trine did and drove poor Trine crazy. I think Katie learned her patience with me from Trine actually. At the time mom lived in Bavaria in a small town with lots of woods and fields so the dogs could just romp freely forever and that is what they did.
I am so happy that mom found Katie because she is the very best big sister a pup could hope to have! Mom has never had a dog this long as she got Trine when she was about 16 months old and she passed away at 10 1/2, so mom and Katie have their own special bond just like I have my special bond with mom for other reasons. May Katie have many more wonderful years with us!
WARNING!!! Cute puppy photo overload possible – watch slideshow at your own risk 🙂
This is part of The Saturday Pet Blogger Hop – Hop around on the other blogs and tell them you are from the blog hop!
Well, I risked it and I watched. You’re right – cuteness overload completely. What a sweet puppy Katie was and how cute, always copying Trine. So sorry you lost Trine – it’s so very very hard. Well done trying to adopt a dog but my word, the place sounds just horrible. You wonder why people have the places if they don’t have a true love for the animals and desire to find the right match between animal and person!?!?
I wish I had met Trine, mom and Katie always say how great she was.
Cute puppy overload is an understatement!
Happy Anniversary Katie – you sure were a very cute pup!!
I know all about being annoying – I’ve been annoying my buddy Cosmo next door ever since I was a little pup and luckily he’s very patient with me too 🙂
Wags to all,
Your pal Snoopy 🙂
