It is definitely fall in Minnesota and this year it is definitely a fall with Fred! If you follow me on my blog, facebook or twitter, you may remember a few months back I did a post on our squirrel friend Fred. He turned out to be a very unreliable squirrel until recently. We rarely saw Fred over the summer but now that fall is setting in, Fred it seems, has moved into our yard. Mom puts out bird food in the feeder in front of my window – says it is so the cats can watch birds but I think it is really for Fred. The cats sit in the window sometimes but mostly
it is my window. He knows where to get a free meal and from the looks of him these days, he is far from starving! We also have some trees and bushes out front with berries that he seems to really enjoy munching on.
We have lived in our house almost 5 years now. When we first moved from Gramma’s home in paradise (she lives in a wooded area with critters everywhere) to our new house in a newer development there were no squirrels and we were a bit sad. Mom said to just wait as everyone was planting trees and
stuff and eventually squirrels will come. Well, it appears that mom was right again! We are seeing less rabbits and more squirrel. Fred seems to really like our largest tree out front for hiding, and we are hoping he builds a nest and brings his wife, time will tell.
Since I am in the window most of the day, I always alert Katie when Fred comes by. She comes racing over to join me and we bark and howl, I go crazy and knock everything off my bench but Fred does not care, he knows we are inside. When mom takes us out front to walk that darn Fred climbs the tree next to the house and goes up on our roof so we can’t get him. I so want to smell and feel his fur in my nose and mouth but it is not looking like that will happen. Enough blogging for now, I have to get back to my post and check on Fred. I think fall with Fred is my favorite season!
This short video shows how wild Katie and I get when Fred gets up close!

We have a squirrel we keep track of too, Stubby, she’s been around most of the summer but now we see her everyday and we know it’s her b/c she’s missing half her tail.
anyone in your home responsible for the missing tail piece??? 🙂
For once I can say no, I don’t know how it happened. Usually if Dottie or Boomer get hold of a squirrel that’s it.
I tried to chase a squirrel up a tree this morning, but I’m not very good at climbing BOL
We don’t have squirrels in New Zealand. Mummy says she saw one in a London Park on her way to the British museum. But what we do have is ‘possums. Me and Nellie don’t get to chase them because they live up in trees and don’t venture down very often. But Me and Nellie love to bark at them if We find on up a tree. Love Nellie and Jasper.
Sounds pretty cool! Squirrels run around on the ground a lot but then we chase them up the trees, lots of fun!
We thinks your mom should let you out to visit Fred lots! With all that howling you deserve to get to chase him around for awhile!
Oh I so wish she would let me out there!
I love your howl Emma! Katie sounds like Leah when she sees a stray cat. 🙂
How nice that your neighborhood planted trees and whatnot to invite some wildlife for you too watch.
Yes, every year it gets a bit better, love those critters!
We feed the birds on the deck rail so the squirrels come right on up to eat it. I just say squirrel and open the door and the newfs come running out full bark. The squirrels scatter really fast to the trees. We have acorns all over the ground they can eat stay out of the bird
food!!
We know the word squirrel too, but don’t have any acorns and mom does not care if they eat the bird food.
Hey Emma,
Isn’t it weird how the Squirrels all disappeared in the Summer – mine did too – I have lots here and they’re all back again – did your Fred and my Squirrels all go off for Summer Vacation together?! 🙂
I guess it breaks the day up to watch (and chase) them – mine never come in the garden, they just run across the fence and sometimes jump into the tree to throw things at me, which I don’t think is very sporting!!
Have fun,
Your pal Snoopy 🙂
They are not sporting at all, mean and teasing is what they are and I want them sooo bad!
Emma, we had to MOL at your last pose! Is that the stylish new bed-at-an-angle look?
That is what happens when I am overly excited because of Fred and my bed and I fall off our window bench – LOL!
Hey Emma, Hey Katie, Jet here.
There must have been a squirrel memorandum this week, because we’ve seen bunches. Our squirrels in the tropics go by the variety red something or other… JJ and I finally have a tag team system to chase those guys. Only downside… Mom’s elbows… we almost pull them out of their sockets. 🙁
BTW, love how you customize your bed for viewing!
My fur is all tied in a knot these days from those teasing squirrels and walking is a nightmare for mom!
I love that the squirrel’s name is Fred! I think our squirrels are on strike because we have so many acorns laying around!
Emma, you are our American Idol! Keep up the good work!
Thanks but I am not going to appear on American Idol – LOL!!!
