The holiday time is a super fun time but it is also stressful for us pups and our humans so Bunny and I thought it would be a good idea for me to howl out a few rules that will help everyone have a more enjoyable holiday time.
For us dogs:
- Rule one – boys!!! Do NOT pee on the Christmas tree! It is a pretty simple thing, it is simply never ok to pee in the house, so definitely not on the Christmas tree, keep your leg down
- If you have a tail and you like to wag it, watch out for the tree, those ornaments will fly like tennis balls when hit with a tail but they don’t land so well and will usually break which means trouble
- Don’t mess with the wrapped packages under the tree even if they smell really nice, they may not be for you and everyone including the family dog has to wait to open them
- Mind your manners if human guests come over, they may not be there to see you (I know, that is a hard one to believe)
- Don’t jump up on Gramma and knock her over out of excitement, she is happy to see you but she generally prefers to remain upright
- This one is the hardest, but very important – don’t steal any food off any table or the kitchen counters, if you follow this rule chances increase that you will be rewarded with food items later
- Don’t drink the humans alcohol even when a glass is left unattended at your level, it is very bad for us dogs
- If someone sticks a goofy hat on your head, just go with it, humans love that kind of thing and it may result in a treat for you
- Keep your nose out of human “private areas”, for some reason they don’t like that, sniff their feet or something else that does not embarrass them
- Be nice to mini-humans, they may play with you as if you are a stuffed toy but rather than growling or biting, just enjoy the attention, maybe kiss them on the face a few times, that tends to scare them away
- If you get to go visit other humans, remember you are a guest and that applies to other pets as well as humans, don’t chase cats or get any fish out of aquariums, be on your best behavior so that you will be asked to visit again
For the humans:
- Be mindful that us dogs are stressed out just as you may be with all the holiday hubbub, try to be calm with us
- If we travel with you, please make sure we are safe by wearing our doggie seatbelts or put us in our travel kennel
- Make sure people don’t feed us human food all the time, some items in moderation would be fine but we don’t want to get sick and we don’t know when to say “no”
- Keep an eye on the mini-humans, they can be really stressful on us dogs especially if we are not used to having them around, we don’t ever want to hurt one of your mini ones but sometimes they drive us to the point of a bite and that should not happen, it is not usually our fault but we have no other option sometimes
- Don’t forget about us, you may be really busy but we still need to be let out to go poddy now and then and make sure we have plenty of fresh water at home or where we end up visiting
- If it is going to be a real stressful gathering, it may be better for you to leave us dogs at home, it would make the time more enjoyable for everyone
Most of all, enjoy the holidays!

Yeah, it is a lot of rules, but they are important – happy holidays to you and your family!
That’s a lot to ask of a dog ya know, but for Santa, I’ll do it!
Well, mom tells me rules were made to be broken so as long as we try we should be good!
your post was a zillion times better than mine!!! Loved this and your photo is just too cute!!!!!!!!!! Barks and licks and love, Dakota
Your post was just more serious, I am not real good at being serious, I add my GBGV goofiness to everything!
Hi Emma,
That’s an awesome list buddy!! You can tell you know your stuff!! I sure hope I can manage it all, my list would probably also include a little Mischief – Tee Hee 🙂
Have a wonderful time over the holidays
Your pal Snoopy 🙂
Trying to stay on best behavior until after Santa delivers…I would hate to slip up and miss out on the stuff on my list. Most likely I will not be able to resist and will knock Gramma over, it just happens 😉
Hey Emma, Jet here. Hi Katie.
Emma, you’ve added another credit to your bulging resume… Emmaly Post!!!
Perfect, perfect advice … which for some reason had Mom laughing at the first part! You brought lightness into a very serious topic. Brava!
Us GBGV’s are just goofy and have a hard time trying to be serious. Glad you and you mom liked my list.
Excellent post Emma!
Thanks – woof!
Oh Emma! I totally broke the rule about sniffing the privates of strangers the other night when mom had company and I kept trying to sniff some poor girls crotch! Hehe
I have my issues trying not to knock gramma over, we do our best but we pups are not perfect!
