Yes, I do have clean chompers…thank you for asking! February is Pet Dental Health Month, so I honor of this important subject I am sharing our teeth brushing experiences with you all! Mom does all she can to make sure we have the best life possible including, staying healthy, getting exercise and experiencing lots of things in life but the things mom is really a crazy woman about are walking, wearing seatbelts and brushing teeth. It is so simple to brush a dog’s teeth, it barely takes any time and we love and expect it AND it is sooo important
yet it seems, amazingly, that most pet owners do not do it!
Let’s think about it as a human for a moment…how would you feel if you never brushed your teeth? How would other people feel about you? Could you become seriously ill or even die from bad teeth? Dogs are in the same boat but we can’t brush our own teeth. We can chew on bones or chew things designed to help keep our chompers clean but nothing can replace brushing our teeth!
Mom started brushing our teeth the first night we were with her. She always starts with the older dog and then moves on to the younger dog, kind of a learn by example concept. In the beginning she used a finger brush so we would get used to the feeling of her finger in our mouth and that brush feeling as well but after a couple weeks we graduate to a real toothbrush with no problems. We also use toothpaste for dogs which is really
important – human toothpaste is not good for dogs. I think we usually have tarter control beef flavor but there is chicken too. We brush every night before we go to bed and we actually wait for it because we like it.
The biggest excuse we hear is that the dog doesn’t let the human brush the teeth. Think about it, mini-humans often fight it when they are younger too. It is a matter of training and can be started at any age. Mom started with her first dog when Trine was about 3 yrs old and that dog learned and loved it. I am 6, my sister is 10 and mom’s first dog lived to be 10 ½ but none of us have ever needed to have the vet clean our teeth and the vet usually says we are poster dogs for teeth brushing.
If you don’t brush you really should get started! It is easy, it will save your dog the danger of being put under for teeth cleaning and the big expense for you, not to mention health issues that can arise from poor dental health. We just use mom’s old toothbrushes so the only expense we have is the toothpaste which we buy online because we find it less expensive and better. We order a lot of supplies including our toothpaste from Drs Foster and Smith and are really happy with their products, service and prices!
Start slowly, use tasty toothpaste and make it a habit, we are certain that if you approach teeth brushing in a calm and fun manner it will become a habit in no time and your dog will actually look forward to it. The biggest danger is that with your pup’s fresh breath, doggie kisses will be harder to resist 🙂
I also received the Why I Love Thee Award this week from my Newfie friends Lexie and Mica, thank you so much for loving and thinking of me!
For this award you must connect back to the giver.
Then if you are a Furfriend you must tell why you love your human, and if you are a human to must tell why you love you furfriends. This award is all about the love. Love we have for all the wonderful friends we have made but mainly the love in your family between bipeds and their wonderful companions!
Last we must give this blog to one or more than one that we feel deserve it.
I have linked back to Lexie and Mica above. Why I love my mom…I don’t think there is enough space in the world to get that all down but I will add an abbreviated version. Mom searched for me and was excited for me even before I was born, she flew to England to get me and has given me such a wonderful home with furry brothers and sisters. She takes such good care of us and even though I hate things like ear cleaning, she always tells me she does it because she loves me. She is a snuggler and we love to snuggle and hug. She provides me with as many life experiences as possible and includes me as much as she can. She would do anything for me and I know that…which makes me a bit of a spoiled girl at times…but she loves me so much and I love her back, it is wonderful!
I am going to pass this award on to two of my newer friends that I just love that also show a ton of love on their blog posts and social media!

Oh wez so late round every one Em, I’m getting my knickers in a twist..BOL.. Humom cleans my teeth, I love’z the paste and the Donny Osmond smile 🙂 xx00xx
Mollie and Alfie
Best untwist your knickers 😉 before you do anything else…sounds uncomfortable!
After sadly losing our beloved Lhasa at 16, primarily due to kidney disease resulting from gum problems and bad teeth, I highly endorse this! Of course we learned our lesson too late and now encourage others to do as you advised them to do, thank you!
I am so sorry! At least you know the importance of it and can help others avoid such a tragedy in the future. Thanks for stopping by.
Congrats Emma! On your new award, and on having a mom that takes such good care of you. 🙂
Thank you.
What a great post Emma! You are such a good girl letting your Mom brush your teeth!! We brush a few times a week here, or at least we try too. Sometimes it’s only once a week.
Congrats on your award!
Thanks…mom is big into schedules so for us it is every night unless she is not home which is rare.
Always good to have clean teeth, it can be hard though. But my human granny had a dog a few years ago that got really bad teeth and had 14 pulled.Ouch!!
I would hate to have to gum a bone to death…rather brush and keep my teeth 🙂
Hi Emma. You know, my Ma always tries to brush my teeth but she says I am uncooperative. I am lucky that I have good teeth but maybe I should try and be better behaved for a brushing. BOL Congratulations on your lovely award (you definitely deserve it)! And thank you so much for sharing the award with me. *Cairn cuddles*
Oz
You deserve it…my new friend 🙂 Now let your mom brush your teeth!
Our mom got the toothbrushes but hasn’t started yet. Don’t tell her we snitched on her. Thank goodness our Vet says we have great teeth cause we chew everything in sight. Max & Bella (typed by the negligent mom, Paulette – gonna get my act together)
Well, your typist better get her fingers on the toothbrush instead of the keyboard 😉
Emmadog you’re a miracle worker. We told her and she cleaned our teeth. That wasn’t too bad at all except at first we thought the brush was a chew toy. And, we also forget to congratulate you and commend you on your choice of paying it forward to Gizmo & Oz the Terrier. Max & Bella 🙂 (have a good weekend, Paulette & thanks for getting me off my butt and into their mouths).
Yay! Glad to hear you are getting started and it will soon be a habit!
Woof! Woof! Very important to take care of our teeth … Golden Thanks for sharing. You are a good girl. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar
Thanks, Sugar!
Congrats on your great award and good advice on teeth brushing!
Thanks, we think it is important!
Congratulations on your award! You so deserve it! Have a great weekend!
Thanks!
Great job Mom on keeping all the teeth clean, that is very important and something I need to work on. And your both very lucky to have such a loving home:-)
Thanks…mom said it is much easier to brush teeth on big dogs…I think that would include you two 😉
You’re so right Emma, my Mum has recently started with me, we’re not quite there yet, but I agree it’s pretty yummy, I’m super suspicious as to what Mum’s up to though – hopefully she’ll keep going!
I hope you’re having a fun day,
Your pal Snoopy 🙂
Since you are not a baby it may take a bit longer but if your mom sticks with it, you will learn to love it 🙂
Daddy’s tried to brush mine a few times but I didn’t like it much. But sadly he said he’s going to try again:-(
You will love it, especially if he has a nice flavored toothpaste! It is good for you too!
Wow Emmadog! You must have beautiful pearly fangs! Very important for a good smile! =^.^=
I do have good ones… 😉
What an awesome dog mom for getting you into the brushing habit! And how right that’s it’s all about training. We tend to forget how much time we spend teaching dogs things when they are puppies and balk at spending that same time when their adults. But when you think about the impact those few minutes day have it’s worth it.
Some things like dental health are very simple and very important but so many humans just don’t get that.
Tooth brushing is so important! (We think a dirty or clean sock would work for our dog toy, but dogs might like a dirty one!)
urban hounds
Nice and smelly 🙂
Hey GBGV’s! It sounds like your mom really takes great care of your teefers. You all are so cute and I bet you have an absolutely terrific smile 🙂
My mom says I do, but she might be a bit biased 😉
