On the safe side of things, it is so very important for us pets to wear proper ID tags and to be microchipped! NEVER LEAVE HOME NAKED! My sister Katie and I have our collars with our tags and we each have 2 chips, one European and one for the USA, so if we are ever lost we will hopefully be found. In case you did not know the chips and readers operate with frequencies and many readers only pick up certain frequencies, not all which is why Katie and I have 2 different chips. Some countries also place the chips in different spots so they may be missed by a scanner in a different country. It is too bad it is not the same worldwide with the location and frequency.
We lost our kitty Tom back on September 17, 2008. He was on the deck one minute and then we never saw him again. He did not have tags and was not chipped. We looked for him with mom for weeks walking all over the place checking everywhere and never found him. He was an outdoor cat when we got him in Germany, so we could not keep him in the house all the time in the US since he loved the outdoors. Now our kitties are house cats but they are also chipped just in case.
While at Blogpaws, mom discovered Just4MyPet.com. This is a great company with a whole line of pet products many of which you can have personalized! Right now they are offering free pet tags so it is a great opportunity to make sure that your pets have proper ID! Just4MyPet is a site for cats and dogs, so if you need a cat tag you can pick one of those up too! Click here for more information on how to get your free pet tag.
Were you aware that June is microchip month? The Found Animals Registry is working hard this month to get pets chipped!
The Found Animals Registry is revolutionizing the way lost pets are reunited with their families through automated Found Pet Alerts. The automated Found Pet Alerts enable humane organizations to contact the pet owner through phone, email and text messages, with information on how to pick up the lost pet. The alerts will continue for up to four days, unless the pet is retrieved sooner. The registry is free and offers the fully automated alert system for reuniting pets with their families.
One in every three pets is lost in its lifetime. In the past five years alone, more than 3 million lost cats and more than 760,000 lost dogs were never reunited with their owners. Through its initiatives in June, Found Animals aims to show pet owners that a microchip itself isn’t enough – microchips must be registered, and contact information kept current, to increase the chances of being reunited with a lost pet.
In celebration of Microchip Month, throughout the month of June several Los Angeles-area partners will offer microchipping at a discounted rate of $10 per pet. These include Adopt & Shop, Angel Dogs Foundation, Spay-4-LA, SNP LA and FixNation. Along with the discount microchip, pet owners will also receive free lifetime registration in our Found.org registry.
Today I am joining in the Saturday Pet Blogger Hops sponsored by Life with Dogs. Join in the fun!
Hi Emma – good message.Since we were both rescue dogs, we’ve been chipped and we always wear our collars with our names and phone numbers. Hopefully we’ll never get lost, but we have it so cushy here at casa de’ slimdoggy, we’d be fools to run away!
But sometimes a wabbit comes along and we lose our senses…that is when it is important!
Hi Emma, we are sorry your family lost your cat. We are both chipped here. Everyone needs to be reminded to do it. Have a great weekend!
Nice work! Stay safe 🙂
I am sorry that Tom went missing and that microchipping is really important, even for us indoor kitties.
Yep, it is because sometimes my cat bro Bert tries to sneak out and if he does some day get away we want to find him again!
Thanks for the info. Hu bro doesn’t have an ID tag for Phe so mom is going right over and ordering from Just4Pets! She has been meaning to get her a tag…just hasn’t done it yet. Silly mom! Mom has been keeping her inside since her last escape so not to worry. But mom can’t be with her all the time!
That girl might need a gps tracking device on her collar too…she is wild!
Thanks for such an informative post. I’m always a little worried about these kind of things. Sorry about your kitty who went missing.
Matilda’s mommy
Well, it was a long time ago now but we still wonder what happened to him.
thanks for the great info!! We received the pet photo contest too….not sure if we are gonna post about it since it might be making the rounds! Have a great weekend!
I know, some things do get posted a bit too much sometimes.
What a great post! All pets here are microchipped, but I’ve read too many stories about a scanner not picking up a chip :-0 Everyone has tags, too, but last week Rosie lost all her tags, including the Rubit we use! Think I’ll go order some more (extras) from these folks. Thanks!
I ripped my sister’s tags off at the dog park once and we never found them. It is always good to have a few forms of ID.
I didn’t know about European microchips not being always found here. This is ridiculous since one of the requirements for us to immigrate with our humans was to be microchiped… to be “identified”!
Thanks for the info!
Purrs
We figured that out at our first vet visit here when they could not read our chip. It is ridiculous but it is what it is and many places don’t have the correct universal readers so they will assume you have no chip or they may look in the wrong place.
Excellent info. All our dogs are chipped. 🙂
Great! They don’t seem like the type to run off but they could get lost in all that tall grass!
That is funny. 🙂
You are right Emma. Both our dog are chipped (Registered) have at least one name tag with two numbers and we have to buy a county tag here which are numbered. Minx has a tag with name and numbers. We lost a cat once when we moved, he went outside and got lost. We did find him after posters two weeks later.
Better to go overboard on the ID thing than to be lost!
Thanks for sharing Ems. I’m chipped and have contact details on my collar too:-)
Very good…we don’t want to lose anyone!
