All of us dogs do it, but have we really thought about it? “Come” is a command every dog knows and performs. How often does your pet parent call you and without a second thought, you go running to them? You poor retriever types probably spend half your lives playing fetch. Have you ever thought of how many miles that game puts on your precious paws? These commands actually help us stay in shape, but I never thought of adding up all those trips back and forth. It is something for you to contemplate today.
I amΒ joining the Black and White Sunday Blog Hop sponsored by Dachshund Nola and Sugar the Golden Retriever. Sometimes photos are simply more fun in black and white.
Definitely something one does not normally think about but so true. π
Mom and I thought it was interesting and something fun to ponder on a Sunday!
HA! That’s why us cats only come when we’re darn good and ready!
That is true, you guys never really exert yourselves unless Bailie and I are chasing you π
Great thought, Emma! I would love to strap my cell phone with my Map Your Walk app on Cricket and see how many miles she puts on playing fetch…and she’s not even a retriever!
Lots of dogs do fetch, but retrievers seem so known to be obsessed. My sisters and I don’t believe in retrieving, but we often (not always) come when called.
I usually go to Katie. I should add how much I ea
K.
When we play fetch, Mom throws the ball, we might pick it up for a second and then leave it and move on…she has to run and get it herself. We are not fetch type dogs but often come when called.
We would add up miles if we actually came when Mom called, but we figure she is just making a suggestion and not really serious about it until she gets that mean voice. BOL
Oh yeah! We have a lot of that going on at our house too π
That’s true, Emma! But I always need 17 calls. The first 16 are not loud enough… btw: yesterday my mom saw an ad at 6pm.com, at the first look she thought that’s you and your mom…. hahaha.. that’s not you, right?
We always figure it is good for Mom to practice calling us, so we take our time as well. When she starts coming towards us and changes to a nasty voice we usually saunter on over. I’m not in any ads with Mom, only me and products π
but if, give me a sign… mom hopes for a huge discount ( she is just impossible, isn’t she hahaha)
Wow! That’s is fascinating! We had really never given that much thought!
I thought it was interesting too. Never thought about it.
What a great quote, never hear of that before and so true! Great picture.
Especially true for your dogs!
Emma, that is a beautiful picture of YOU! A good quote to ponder at my young age. XOXO Sparkle the PBGV
You might want to avoid some of the fetch games and coming when called stuff to save on you paws a bit π I just came back from the groomer in that photo the other day and Mom thought I looked really pretty.
I like to play fetch, tug-of-war, and coming when called and not called. The mom took off the cone and the t-shirt. I am FREE, and I have very happy feet! π Sparkle the PBGV
Awesome news! I bet it makes you feel much better! We come when not called a lot, when called, it just depends on if what we are doing at that moment is more important or not.
Interesting thought to ponder for the day Emma…thousand and thousands for some of those fetch obsessed Labs.
So glad I don’t do fetch, it saves on my tired paws!
That’s very true. When we hike, Torrey covers twice the ground going back and forth.
I don’t do fetch, but I get twice the exercise going back and forth looking for wabbits and squirrels.
LOVE the quote. Woofs from Sugar as a retriever. Have a great Sunday. Golden Woofs
I thought it was pretty thought provoking. Keep on fetching Sugar!
That is a good thought, Emma… What I often observe is that herding dogs walk/run seven times farther than their human escort because they are constantly circling them!
That I would say is true as well. Those herding dogs are really crazy π I get in twice the walk going off road back and forth hunting for wabbits and squirrels.
Boomer and Dottie have put in lots of miles fetching and coming when called.
I bet they have and I also bet the mileage doesn’t bother them at all!
I never thought about it like that! Pyrs rarely come when called so they don’t get quite the exercise π
A Kuvasz doesn’t believe in coming when called either, but Katie got lots of miles in running away from Mom when called, LOL! Mom got lots of tears in out of frustration. Bailie and I are not a real “obedience” breed either but we usually come when called unless we are on the trail of a critter.
Beautiful pic. Never seen that quote before but it’s something to think about!
I just stumbled across it and liked it.
I wonder, do they make step counters for dogs? That would be an interesting experiment. Believe it or not, my Labrador Retriever Maya is not a very good retriever. Oh, she comes when called, but she seldom fetches anything. She loves tug-of-war, though. That’s a good exercise too. Plus, it helps reinforce her “drop it” command. Playing and training goes hand-in-paw. π
I think every dog has there thing, if it isn’t fetch, it is running away when called, agility, chase games, it would be cool to see how far we really travel. Even on walks with all my back and forth I walk further then Mom does. Making training play is the best way to train π
denny for sure does a lot of running and fetching……but Reilly – he just stands and watches me as I go and fetch the ball he won’t π π
My sisters and I are with Reilly, no fetch for us, but we get extra running in other ways.
That’s a great photo of you! β₯ Mom would have to add the steps I take running trying to get a chase happening instead of bringing things back and dropping them. βΊ
My sisters and I don’t play fetch either. We enjoy watching Mom get it herself…after all, she is the one that had the bright idea to throw it!
Fetch?? what language is that? Is it an acronym for something? I DO chase things sometimes when they are thrown, but then they are mine and if you want it back….. Now my sister who is a PBGV thinks Fetch is a game and she likes it in short spurts, but me???? I’m a GRAND! Why would I engage in a senseless human game?
Chablis
That is exactly why I refer to retriever types. A good GBGV grabs and runs, no fetch, just a game of chase. If Mom wants something she throws back, she can get it herself or chase us down to get it back!
I love playing fetch! Sooooo much! Great photo!
I guess that also means you love to run which is an awesome workout! Happy Sunday!
Oh boy has Ace put on the miles playing fetch. He is one of those obsessive types!
It is pretty amazing to think of that mileage, isn’t it?
BOL! How interesting!!! I bet all the dogs in the world (after reading your post) and going to want one of those step tracking things!!!
α¦ husky hugzΒ α¦Β frum our pack atΒ Love is being owned by a husky!
That would be really interesting to do. Even just walking I know I walk farther than Mom because of all my back and forth, side to side, critter hunting.
I’ve never thought about it. I wonder how much my dogs run in a day, or a week…
We never thought about it either, but it is something to think about.
Some dogs don’t get that much exercise from the “Come!” command, Emma…if they are like me, that is, and pick and choose when to “respond” to that command. BOL Though I do like a good game of fetch so you are right…it’s probably a LOT of miles.
Oz
Bailie and I do pretty well with the come command unless we are too busy at the time we are called. Katie put down lots of miles as a youngster with the come command. To her it meant run like the devil the other way and get a game of catch me going. Poor Mom was really at the end of her rope, but the past few years she has become more obedient π
Ha ha, I think my distance would be quite low on those requests!
We don’t do fetch, but Mom puts down the miles fetching what she throws herself. We often come when called, though, so we get some miles there.
So true Emma!
It is isn’t it?
Well, you sure got me thinkin’ Emma! When I’m playing fetch, I don’t think about anything but tennis. My brain is on the ball.
That is what I mean. We do these things without ever thinking about the miles we put on our paws!
