Happy birthday to my mom who is turning fifty today! I don’t really understand it, but she says fifty isn’t all that nifty…what does that mean, and who doesn’t want to celebrate their birthday?
I had to ask, “How old is fifty, anyways?” Mom said it means she is half a century old! Wow! We furs got together and counted paws, Katie, Bailie, me, Bert, Sophie, even cousin Lena, but we only came up with 24 and Mom says that isn’t even half of fifty, so we are talking about a really big number! I asked her to tell me a bit about what it was like way back half a century ago and she told me some startling stuff! I don’t know how anyone survived back then!
- Many cars didn’t even have human seat belts, so dogs were never belted in!
- Smoking and drinking was the “in” thing to do in person, on TV, and in movies.
- There was no cable TV, just 4-5 channels that shut off around midnight, seriously?
- TV remotes didn’t exist – you had to actually go to the TV and turn a dial to adjust sound or channel!
- Rabbit ears has nothing to do with wabbits – they were on TV sets to get reception, very weird!
- Telephones were rotary dial and most homes had just one phone with no call waiting.
- There were no cellphones.
- There were glass boxes on the streets with telephones in them that some guys named Superman and Underdog used to change their clothes in.
- Email, and messaging did not exist. People had to write letters and send them with US Mail, if it was a rush, they had something called a telegram.
- Cameras used some things called film and flashcubes, what is that all about?
- To see your photos, you had to have your film developed, which was expensive, took days, and you ended tossing out half your photos, crazy!
- People often left the doors to their homes unlocked.
- Airport security did not exist.
- No one had a computer because there were no personal computers, how did anyone get information?
- Blogs and social media did not exist – what, are you kidding me!
- This one was the absolute worst! Most pets were treated as animals, yes, animals, not as family members, can you believe that!
Those are just a few things she told me about and I must say I feel really lucky to not have lived in those olden days!
Mom says it isn’t so much the number fifty that she is bother by, it is the fact that she feels more like mid to end thirties, not fifty. I need to make sure her birthday is a good one, so I have a couple things planned for her today. First of all, we are having nose work class at our house tonight. It is our last distractions class, so we invited everyone to our place to do miniature vehicle searches. My good pal next door, three year old Brody, is lending us his cars for class. He has six vehicles he drives around the yard that we can borrow for class. That will be fun! To top it off, I’m going to invite Mom to DQ for a blizzard!
I stopped by ahead of time to check out the menu and I figured out I can afford to buy her any size blizzard she would like. I have a feeling she will go with the XL and then complain that she is feeling ill because it was too much and then make Bailie run extra long with her in the morning to burn the calories. Mom does that all the time – she has eyes bigger than her stomach! I also stopped and bought a couple fun signs for her now that she is older. She tends to be accident prone, so those may come in handy.
Last but not least, Mom and I took a selfie. We are not real good at taking selfies, but we are learning. Happy Birthday, Mom! I love you even if you are older than the hills!
Oh my, to be 50 again!! Take it from one who is closing in on 70 in a couple of years – the 50s were the best years of my life!! Enjoy – celebrate yourself today – Happy Birthday!! π
Mom says every decade seems better when you look back on it. I’m sure 50 will be fine.
Happy Birthday to mum. Sounds like you got a great day planned. Enjoy and wish you a wonderful special day. Have a terrific Tuesday.
Best wishes Molly
Thank you. As long as we are hanging out together it will be great.
Happy Birthday to your Mom – looks like a wonderful day to be celebrating and a DQ makes it all the better π
She loves to get those decadent desserts once and a while.
That was a terrific bday post for your mom Emma you had me tearing up by the end selfie. Happy 50th joy have a wonderful day.
We already took her for a nice long walk. I will make sure and spoil her today.
Oh my Mom remembers those ‘good ole days’ very well!
β«β«β«β« A big Hap-Pee Birthday to your Mom.. β«β«β«β«
(got cake???)
We have some leftover cake from the weekend. The blizzard will be the treat of the day!
Happy Birthday to your Mum. Tell her life is still good at and after 50. Hope she has a wonderful day.
She always says there is only one option, and that would be no birthday which would be bad, so she will adjust!
Happy Birthday to Mom!!! π
Thank you!
hi Emma. my gosh, my sister and I are stunned to read about all the things your mom didn’t have as a kid 50 years ago! Our mom will be 50 in 3 years and she tries to tell us these things but we didn’t believe her!! Happy birthday to your mom! Hope it’s a fun day. Good idea on DQ! Your doodle friend Dash
Life was real bleak back then. I’m sure the 50’s will be great for her, after that list, it can’t get much worse!
50 is Fabulous! Happy Birthday Mom.
Wags,
Ranger
I’m hoping it’s fabulous…we are stuck with her no matter what, so we want it to be good.
You are a thoughtful pup Emma, making sure your mom has a special day. I’m sure that you and Bailie & Katie will see to it. Happy Birthday and many, many more. PS. you don’t look a day over 35 π
We already had her out for a long walk, kitty Sophie made sure she was awake at 5 am to take in the entire day, and the fun is just beginning!
Happy Birthday ! Fifty is just a number. You are lucky to have three wonderful family members to celebrate with. Have a great day!
We tell her it is all in her head. She doesn’t seem all that old to us.
Happy happy birthday! You just made it into the Baby Boomer generation too. It looks like the dogs have a great day planned for you so enjoy. Love the speed limit sign! Love Dolly
Thank you. Mom is trying to figure out where she fits with the baby boomer, gen x, y, and z stuff. I will just call her 50 and be done with it.
Emma, what a wonderful tribute to your mom on her birthday. Holy cow, how did people survive back then? My mom (who has 15 years on your mom) remembers the year your mom was born – The Beatles arrived in the USA, but I am not sure why she gets excited about some silly bugs. Happy Birthday, Joy!!! XOXO Sparkle the PBGV
Did they arrive because my mom was born? Mom doesn’t remember much from those first few years, but she said life was real different back when she was young. I’m happy with the easier life.
The mom says life was pretty simple back then. She had a cocker spaniel she could just open the door and let him run the neighborhood. He would bring in our newspaper and one morning he collected ALL the newspapers on our street and put them on our front porch! She says she would now not know what to do without her computer and Garmin. π Sparkle
Hard to believe my mom wanted nothing to do with computers until about ten years ago. Once she get started, she got addicted. No internet is a complete disaster for us!
Happy Happy Birthday to youuuu
Snorts
Lily & Edward
Thank you π
What a gorgeous selfie!!! Happy birthday and congrats on the big 5-0!
As long as I’m in Mom’s selfies, they come out pretty good!
Happy Birthday to your very special Mom from all of us!
Thank you!
Fifty isn’t so bad. And it is all in how you feel. Have an awesome day, and enjoy that blizzard.
We figure she will adjust fine. Once she forgets about that number things will get back to normal.
Emma, say Happy Birthday to your mom from me. I loved this blog and the list of things that has changed. I sometimes think back and wonder how I got by without a cell phone, and remember the miracle of sending my first text message. =D
Mom says it is weird because she panics when she is out and about and realizes she forgot her phone at home, but then she wonders how she lived before she had a cellphone. Times just change!
I do that too – if I go out and forget my cell phone I feel like I forgot to put on clothes. And I still lived half my life without one. The first mobile phone I saw was in a guy’s car, and the base station for it took up half the trunk. Life has sure changed since then…
Lots of changes I hear from Mom. She does love things the way they are, but she sometimes misses the simplicity of the old days.
Happy Birthday to your Mom! I like your selfie and how great that you can post it immediately without waiting for days :o) My mom remembers that times, the phones even had a tail what ends in a hole what was in the wall… and if you had a top-secret phone call your momma caught you in the act following the tail of that phone :o) Think your mom should get that xl-blizzard…dancing with you on her birthday party will burn the calories in zilch :o)
The phone thing was real rough back then. Secret calls were nearly impossible I think. I will get her that blizzard and then roll her around after until is settles in her belly.
Happy Birthday to your mom! My mama is even older so she said to tell your mom it’s not so bad. Other than a few aches here and there now and then 50 is the new 30 β‘
That is good news, Mom feels more like 30, thank you for the birthday wishes.
Happy Birthday to your mom from Boomer, Dottie and I!
Thank you!
Happy birthday! Not even 8 in dog years. Plus keeping up with your pack certainly keeps you young. Enjoy a well deserved treat! Now that you mention it, I may need to get one even though it’s not my birthday. We’ll send a blizzard cheers from Chicago.
It can be a virtual blizzard party! I should have planned that!
Times certainly have changed!! I also wonder how we got by in those days, I don’t think we could have even imagined the things we would have today.
Happy Birthday to your Mom, Emma, it sounds like you have a wonderful day planned for her. She should definitely go for the extra large Blizzard….you only turn 50 once!
I know she will go for the monster size, that is what she always does. We have been walking her today, so she should have room for it.
Happy birthday! Enjoy the big 50! You’re only as young as you feel. And one of the good things about living with pets is they make you feel young because you get to play and laugh and exercise!
–Wags (and purrs) from Life with Dogs and Cats
We do keep her young with all the activity stuff. She doesn’t feel 50, so we are on the right track!
We all hope that your mom has an awesome birthday! Turning fifty isn’t such a big deal, my mom did it a few years ago! She says that she still feels young in her head, but sometimes her body doesn’t agree! Give her lots of snuggles and kisses from us! XXOO Bentley
Mom feels silly doing some of the things she does when people ask her how old she is, but she also says as you get older you really don’t care if others think you are odd at times.
Happy Birthday Joy! Love your selfie with Emma! Hope you guys party it up!!! π
We will have a wild nose work class I bet!
Happy Birthday!
Mommy said, need someone to share that extra large cup?
Probably towards the end Mom will need help but refuse to give in…typical human that doesn’t know when to quit.
50? Pfft… that’s nothing! π Hope you’re having a barking good birthday!
Half a century sure sounds serious to this dog!
I wish I was 50 again!! Happy, HAPPY Birthday! Sounds like you will have a GREAT celebration!! Enjoy your day!
Jeanne, Chloe and LadyBug
Mom says we spend our lives “wishing”. Humans learn to just live in the now and enjoy it π
Memory Lane. If you think your mom’s list was bad, it was worse when I was growing up. There were very few television sets and only in black and white with very tiny screens. Maybe 11″. My mom had to cook with a stove and it took a long time to boil water. (no microwave.) Not a lot of people had cars. We did because my dad needed one. There was no air conditioning in cars or in homes. We had indoor plumbing. Thank goodness for little things. Then again, we lived in a big city. I’m not sure if people who lived in the country had it.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY. It gets easier as you get older.
Wow, sounds almost like “Little House on the Prairie” conditions. We are quite thankful for the easy life we have!
Tell your mom that she will always feel younger than her age. Because that’s just how it works.
The good news is that she’ll always be young at heart.
I hope she stays young at heart. We work hard to keep her that way.
Have a great birthday celebration – the years are just a number, you can pick anyone that you would like!!! From Sarah, Peebs Benjamin and Zachary and Star, the GSD.
Thank you! Mom has been having a great day and so far the numbers haven’t been a problem at all π
Happy Birthday! The day my baby sister turned 50 I started to wonder. Fifty IS nifty. Sounds like your girls are taking good care to help you CELEBRATE. CELEBRATE life – each day, each hour, each dog! Enjoy the new inventions, but remember the good old days when most of us didn’t even have a TV, and if we did it was small ,and black and white. $5.00 would buy a whole BIG bag of groceries. Gum was .05/pack. Chum Bum bubble gum was .01/ three sticks.
Mom said there were some good points about the old days and she does miss the simplicity at times. She has had a wonderful day, thank you!
HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOUR MOM!!! She looks no older than 30!!! “Fifty had BETTER be nifty” my mom is 58!!! Barks and licks and love, Dakota
I hear the 50’s club for women rocks…maybe it is true?
Happy Happy Birthday to your mom π 50 is just a number. Your mom runs like she in her 20’s π Golden Woofs
Thank you. She tries to stay young π
So many summer birthdays in your family! Tell your mom Happy Birthday from Ace and I! This is such a cute post!
No more this summer, Sept. is the next one and that is mine π
Happy Birthday to your mom! Hope she had a very special day!
Thank you, we made sure she had a great day!
Happy birthday to your mom! Hope she had a wonderful day! Love the selfie. π
Thank you. She had a great day with us.
Happy birthday to your momma!
Thank you.
You certainly don’t look 50! I was shocked to see this post. Happy birthday! π
If you were shocked, imagine how Mom feels living with such a number, LOL! She is happy a few folks were shocked.
Happy birthday!!
Thank you, she had a great day!
Oh Happy Birthday mom!!!!! You look amazing for 50! I would have never guessed! Love Tue selfie, hope you enjoyed your day, and BTW, I sent you a little somethin’ somethin’ via twitter β₯
α¦ husky hugzΒ α¦Β frum our pack atΒ Love is being owned by a husky!
Thank you! We just checked on twitter, how sweet. You huskies are awesome!
it looks like emma had everything under control. congratulations on hitting the mid-century mark. when i hit 50 my mom told me not to worry about the number. worrying causes stress and stress causes wrinkles. BOL i hope you had a glorious day.
Mom says we girls cause enough stress. She is going to forget about the number and at her age forgetting has gotten easier π
Happy birthday to your mum, and tell her 50 is the new 40 apparently!
We also heard it is the new 30. As long as it is not the new 60, we are fine with it π
But 60 is so the new 21! ;0)
That will make Mom smile!
Happy BIrthday!
Thank you!
Harley and I wish you continued blessings on such a special birthday that should be celebrated for several days. Emma, you’re in charge, keep the party going…. PS: We love Dairy Queen too!
Heavens, we spoil her every day! She had a great birthday, though, and is adjusting to the new decade quite well.
Happy belated birthday! A day with the pups and DQ sounds like a perfect bday to me! And I thought your mom WAS in her mid- to late-30s! Had no idea she was my age! (I’ll be 50 in March. And I’m not feeling so nifty about it… But, like you, I keep thinking I’m still in my late 30s. How did I get so old??)
Mom says thank you. Time flies, faster and faster, the older she gets. She isn’t feeling great about it, but since it can’t be changed she is adjusting as best as she can.
Happy Birthday to your Mom and I remember the B & W TV’s. It is only a number so just keep going and you always stay young π
There aren’t many options but to keep plugging along. Being alive is something to celebrate every day, so it really isn’t that bad.
I hope you all had a great time!
We had a great day with Mom.
Mom forgot to tell you one thing. Sometimes the phones had party lines. Not like the party lines you will think about, it means that you could pick up your phone to use it and someone else might already be TALKING on it!!
Glad you took good care of mom, I’m sure just spending time with guys was more than enough for her.
Mom’s house never had a party line, but her grandparents did have one of those and she said it was so weird. Can’t even imagine!
