Happy Halloween!
Love, Bailie, Katie, and Emma
Now on to FitDog Friday items. It’s been a bit since I’ve barked about nose work. Bailie and I are still taking our advanced class once a week and doing our homework 2-3 days a week. Recently we have been working on fringing and inaccessible hides. You may be wondering, what are fringing and inaccessible hides? Fringing is where we have picked up the odor, but we are on the fringes of it, not directly on it and we signal alert. This is what I did in my failed search at the nose work trial in September. We need to find the exact location of the odor and only then should we signal. Inaccessible hides are hide we are unable to get our nose on directly because of their location. An example would be in nose work 1 trials, odor can be as high as four feet off the ground, which for me is inaccessible, so how do I alert Mom on that? We are learning a lot and honing our skills as well.
For Halloween, Mom thought a Halloween container search would be a fun idea. The search area and containers are in the photo, the four hides are marked with the arrows. Container searches can be indoors or outdoors. Right now outdoors is challenging with all the leaves and other smells of fall.
I started out and headed for the pink pumpkin bucket. In the photo above from left to right, I’m heading towards the pumpkin, have my head in it, and then look at Mom to signal my alert. This hide could be considered inaccessible because it is in the bottom of the pink pumpkin and I cannot get my head in there. To signal alert on such a hide I need to clearly show Mom with my nose where the hide is exactly.
Next I went to the pottery pumpkin and found the hide inside of it.
I headed over to the ghost as I could smell something from that direction.
Using my nose I sniffed up that ghost and found the hide to be right behind his little neck.
Bailie was up next. She almost got nabbed by the spooky hand in the purple bowl!
She searched the pottery pumpkin really well.
When Bailie was certain, she gave the alert.
To end this Halloween post, we had some fun with our Halloween photo. It was real windy and things were blowing around, including Katie’s hat. We found this funny outtake from the shoot. Bailie looks mad that Katie isn’t wearing her hat, and poor Katie feels bad it fell off! Me, well, I’m just modeling as any good model would – ignoring any distractions!
You may have also heard Bailie and I are going to Dory’s Big Halloween Bash with Bentley and Pierre! Bentley was kind enough to post a video of us all dancing. The four of us had a real swell time as you can see! You can read all about our fun evening, including some paw holding, hayrides and more, over at Bentley’s place today!
Being Halloween, we are also linking up to the Halloween Blog Hop sponsored by my sweetie Bentley, Oz the Terrier, and Melissa’s Mochas, Mysteries, and Meows The linky list will be below the FitDog Friday Blog Hop linky list.
I’m co hosting the FitDog Friday Blog Hop with SlimDoggy, and To Dog With Love! Please join us on Fridays to share your fitness stories with others, find new ways to have fun, and new fitness ideas too! Tell your friends to stop by as well – fit dogs are healthier, happier dogs!
What a clever idea your Mom had girls. Looks like you had fun too! Have a blast this Halloween. Love Harley
You have fun too Harley, can’t wait to see what you are up to.
Looks like lots of fun nose work! That video is so sweet and funny too!!
Happy Howloween!!!!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
Bailie and I don’t really care what the hides look like, we just like finding them, but it was fun for Mom to set up.
Yappy Howloween!
Watch out for all the ghosts and goblins later today, and have a good time.
Looks like you are having fun with your mom! Love your Halloween outfits!! Happy Halloween! xo Chloe and LadyBug
Yeah, she can be pretty fun actually…for a mom 😉
I love your spider hat!!
Thank you. Mom thought it was pretty neat and she isn’t afraid of spiders, so it is alright to wear.
What spooky sniffing fit dog fun! Happy Howloween.
We can sniff out ghosts and stuff now I guess!
Love seeing you all have some Fall fun. Have a fabulous Friday and Happy Halloween to you all and may your day be a frightening one in good way.
Best wishes Molly
We had fun doing out homework in the Halloween set up. Happy Halloween to you and hope it isn’t too spooky!
Happy Halloween to you! Sounds like your nose work is coming along. I imagine it can be a challenge outside.
Right now the biggest issue is getting Bailie to understand the difference between tracking and nose work outside. She has totally different gear on for each sport, but she is so into tracking, she has to really be reminded to focus on nose work instead.
I imagine that would be hard. We have found that doing too many things at once confuses our dogs.
They are actually very complimentary sports, but Bailie really favors tracking. Once she has her mind reset to nose work, she does really well. She is still young, so it is hard to always capture her attention.
Great nose work! Love the last shot! Happy Halloween!!
Thank you. Happy Halloween!
That looks like lots of fun! Have a spooky cool Halloween!
You kitties have a scary Halloween…jump out at people, that is always scary.
You guys are getting so good at that nose work – and it’s sure getting harder isn’t it? Hope you have fun at the party – love the spider hat Emma!
Nose work is just one challenge after another but I so enjoy it. Bailie prefers tracking but once she puts her mind to it, she is good at nose work too.
FUN way to do nose work. Have a Happy and Safe Halloween. Golden Woofs
Festive for the occasion. We don’t care what the containers are, we just enjoy the search.
Happy Halloween! You are doing so well with your nose work! You should be very proud of your accomplishments.
Oz
Bailie and I are both pretty happy with our noses these days. Because we are using them for so many things, they are actually getting better too which is typical if a dog works with their nose. Happy Howloween!
Great job on the Halloween nose work! You all look fab in you hats! hee hee! Have a fun Halloween!
You could do a haunted agility course, Rocco! Happy Howloween and have fun at BW!
You all are so nosey and doing so well. You mom makes everything fun! Have a fun and SAFE Halloween. XOXO Sparkle the PBGV
Mom always wanted a bunch of kids, but since she didn’t have any, she has us and does all that “kid” stuff with us instead. We don’t mind a bit!
What a fun way to celebrate Halloween and practice your nose work at the same time! Your Halloween photo (& video) are just adorable 🙂
Thank you. The container search was a good time.
I think you guys should all sit perfectly still like scarecrows in your front yard and then spook trick-or-treaters. But that’s just me.
Bailie would love to jump out and then on the kids if we let her! Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween – have a pawsome evening trick a treating
Tonight we lay low waiting for the silly door bell ringing to finally end.
That’s great! You guys are really getting good at the nose work.
We are working hard, doing lots of homework and taking our classes.
Happy HOWL o Ween to you….
Arrooooo!
I love that your mom put together some seasonal noseworks! That looks like a fun way to search 🙂 I don’t have too many Halloween decorations since kids don’t really come to our apartment complex, so I don’t decorate more than carving a pumpkin–but I bet Barley would have liked that kind of noseworks fun, too!
Different containers are always good. They get bored sniffing the same stuff in the same place all the time.
Fun way to celebrate Halloween!
Next up, Bailie is going tracking and while the track is aging we get to go for a walk!
I agree, a howl-o-ween container search is a wonderful way to celebrate this day! I hope Katie’s hat will not fly to Oz :o) have a super spooky howl-o-ween!
Poor Katie! I think the hat may land in OZ as it is still real windy out there!
Aw, The dogs look so adorable w/ their hats and pumpkins! Looks like you had a fun search!
Thank you! We always like nose work, so any search is fun for us!
Happy Halloween, Emma, Bailey and Katie! Nose work sounds like fun but so much work. Your mom did a great job with all those decorations. Bailey is getting as big as you (but I still think you are the prettiest!) Paw hugs.
Nose work isn’t really that much work, tracking is much more work which is why only Bailie is doing that right now. It is real time consuming, but we love it all. Happy Halloween!
We had an amazing time at Dory’s with you girls. If not for your advanced scent tracking, we’d still be wandering around the corn maze! I sure had a fun time on our first date. (paw holding ♥) I love Bailie and Katie’s expression in your last photo! BOL!Happy Howl-o-ween! Thanks for joining our Spooktacular Halloween Hop! XXOO Your Basset, Bentley
Thanks to you for all the planning, Bentley. Without you, I don’t think the date would have happened. Bailie had a blast too, but she always has a blast…even chewing on a pumpkin stem, youngsters! Hope your Halloween evening isn’t too spooky! GBGV hugs, Emma
You girls did great with your scent work! It’s always interesting to learn more about it and see you in action. It looks like you have a nice yard for setting different things up for it.
We do our nose work all over the place, public parks, other people’s homes and yards, you name it, we put hides there!
Happy Howl-o-ween sweeties! =D
You all too! Just heard on the weather that it is going to be real cold in FL in a day or two, so bundle up!
Happy Halloween! Love your Halloween hats!
Thank you!
OMD Emma, are you aware of, you have a spider sitting on your head??? Happy Halloween.
As long as it is not a squirrel, I’m alright with it 😉 Happy Howloweeen!
Excuse me, but are you having too much fun to notice There’s a HUGE spider on your head?
What! Oh my dog! How embarrassing is that! I guess I was having too much fun!
Happy Halloween!! I love hearing about you nose work, have always been interested and it’s nice to see how they train.
I am in love with nose work. You should see how excited I get when Mom says those words or I get to class. I get really mad when other dogs get a turn! Bailie likes it, but she is more into tracking right now. Hope your Halloween wasn’t too spooky!
I’m sure Katie was relieved that hat blew off–at least that’s what I’m thinkin’. You are doing really well in nose work, Emma! I liked it, but Mom thought the teacher was a ditz…
Our instructor is really great, no ditz there!
That last photo outtake is perfect – Bailey really does look quite distressed at the fact that Katie isn’t wearing hers lol. And yes Katie looks a bit perplexed about the whole situation – but of course you being the professional never miss a chance to give the perfect post. I’ve always wondered how much of a difference nose work is outdoors when it’s so windy – the kids here in Michigan had some 45 mph winds and snow here last night in Michigan, not exactly perfect Halloween weather.
Our Halloween was just cold. Wind plays a big factor outside, but surprisingly, indoors there is a lot of air movement as well from heating/cooling vents, even outlets have air movement. We need to learn to follow that odor trail to its source.
Your mom comes up with pawsome games! We’ve started basic obedience lessons and the human needs to plan in practice time too!
Thankfully, Bailie finished obedience in the spring and we passed our CGC tests in the summer so we can now forget everything we learned! Well, not really, we still do work on it, but not as intently.
