Sometimes being the middle dog really stinks! I used to be the family baby and got to do lots of stuff alone with Mom, but now with Bailie as the baby and Katie as a senior, I’m stuck in the middle. Last week, Mom realized Katie and Bailie get lots of alone time with her, but I rarely do which isn’t fair. She decided to load me up to go for a fun walk in the woods at one of my favorite parks. We planned on taking some fun photos and simply spending good one on one time while getting some exercise.
Mom walks with just Katie one to two times a day, she runs three to four times a week alone with Bailie and takes her tracking. I always get stuck walking with Katie or Bailie and for nose work, I go with Bailie. It was really fun having Mom all to myself for a change.
I got to walk at the pace I wanted to walk at. Mom let me do all the sniffing I wanted too! There were all kinds of wabbit and squirrel tracks to check out, and some nest areas which were chock full of great smells!
We were enjoying the fun of walking one on one so much Mom decided to hardly take any photos and just enjoy our time walking along. It was a real nice workout as I like to walk pretty fast, the area is a bit hilly, and walking in snow always uses some extra energy. When I walk with Katie we have to go so very slow and with Bailie, she is always getting in my way which made being the only dog setting the pace so much fun!
We spent about an hour on our hike and then went back home. The only thing we couldn’t do was canoeing, the portage spot wasn’t real user friendly on a winter day! I would like to remind pet parents with multiple pets to remember how nice one on one time is for each pet. Your furry ones will all appreciate it.

Glad ya got some alone time wif your momma – dat are important.
It is. Somehow we kind of forgot about the middle dog for a bit, but now she has promised to do more alone time things with me too.
One-on-one time is so special. I know that you both enjoyed you time alone. That is a beautiful place to walk.
I always love to go on outings with only Mom and I. Yesterday she took only me shopping to get the item we needed for our new campaign and it was a lot of fun. I love getting all the attention from the people too rather than having to share it with my sisters.
Mum time is special time we say. Have a fabulous Friday.
Best wishes Molly
This is true.
Special time with your special person – perfect!
I love doing anything with my mom, and I like to be close to her as much as I can, but alone time is really special.
Yay for one on one time!! I love when that happens!! Happy Friday. Great photos!, your doodle friend Dash
It is nice to have the mom all to ones self sometimes. No sharing for a time, is really special.
One on one time is definitely nice! Glad you & your mom enjoyed your walk, Emma ~ it looks like a fun place to hike for sure.
We had a really great time and it makes me so happy.
Emma I totally understand! It’s been no fun at all having to walk with Taffy. She just makes mom grumpy and ruins my walk. Yesterday I got to go to the park with just mom, something about her back hurting from walking Taffy, it was so nice, I got to run off leash and chase sticks! I think mom is planning an outing with just me too, Taffy would be out of control in the woods! I’m so glad you got some “mommy and me” time, which is what we call it. Love Dolly
Exactly. I love my sisters, but just being with mom and having her focus on only me for a bit is so nice. Hope you get more mommy and me time. I got to go on a shopping trip with her yesterday which was also fun.
Hi, Emma! I am Lyla. Sparkle is letting me write today. There are 4 of us poopers. Hollee is my mama, and the senior. Then Panda, my half-brother who is sick and gets LOTS of attention. Then me. Finally Sparkle and you know what a brat she is because you have Bailie. I am so sweet, but I get left out bunches. I need some special attention too! The mom is thinking of something to do with just me. XOXO Lyla the Boston terrier
Being wedged in the middle is so frustrating, but now mom has realized it and is trying to do something with just me at least once a week. Yesterday I got to go shopping with her and it was fun. It’s not like I don’t get to do stuff, I just rarely get to do stuff alone. You get it.
Oh Emma, Ma says she can hear your insides saying “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!” (Brady Bunch reference…Ma is showing her age). You are right that it isn’t fair that as the middle dog, you don’t get any special “me” time with your mom. I am so glad she decided to go on that wonderful hiking adventure with just you. This post is a great reminder for those with multiple pets to spend some quality “me” time with each one! Have a great weekend, my friend.
Oz
My mom knows every episode of that show inside and out. She always wanted to be Jan 😉 Sometimes we have to watch it on MeTV when it is on and Mom has the urge for a Brady fix. I know I’m a super lucky pup and am spoiled too, but still, a bit of one on one time with mom really makes me happy. We are going to try for one outing a week with just her and I.
I’m glad you got some good one-on-one time with your mom! Barley and I get lots of one-on-one time since she’s the only pup, but Soth doesn’t go out of the house except for vet trips, so it’s harder to get one-on-one time with him. It’s always nice when we get some snuggle time while Barley’s off playing with her toys or sleeping in the spare room.
After being the baby for seven years, it has been tough switching to a middle dog. I can’t complain as I have a wonderful life, but mom and me time makes me really happy. We are going to try and do this once a week from now on.
That’s awesome. I take Torrey by herself and we can go as fast as we want. Roxy is getting to be a slow poke.
We did a lot of that before Bailie, but now with Bailie things are almost always 2 and 1, but the 1’s are Bailie or Katie. Now Mom has realized and is going to try for at least one outing with only her and me every week.
Aw that’s so great you got some alone time with mom!
I like to do that with my huskies also, and you can just tell they know it is their time to be spoiled!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
Exactly. I know it is all about me and I love it!
What a nice change for you Emma and a great reminder for those of us with multiple pets. I do like walking just one dog sometimes and it’s always a great opportunity to work one on one with any issues the pup might have.
Mom says it is almost boring having only one dog to be watching! I think it is nice for her and the dog and for training, much easier.
We have heard that Two’s Company and three’s Kinda Difficult…
With three, one is always left out it seems. We never really planned on three, but we are three and it is fine. Two is so much easier for everyone.
Mama takes turns with us, Dory one day, then Arty, then Jakey. Bilbo doesn’t get around to well outside, but he gets to follow Mama around the house everyday!
Smileys!
Dory, Jakey, Arty & Bilbo
Mom promised to go out with me at least once a week from now on and so far we have two weeks under our furs. It really makes me happy having Mom all to myself.
Seems you have the same problem like that dude named Malcolm in the middle…butt you fortunately have a super momma and you have the most fabulous thing: your blog! it’s your picture and your name on the top :o)
I have to be careful Bailie doesn’t try to creep into my blog too much, but you are right, it is all mine!
one on one time is great, glad you enjoyed your walk.
I’m sure you all have similar problems some times.
Nice to get some quality time and attention one on one. It’s something every pup deserves.
With two dogs it is pretty easy, but with three, it gets a bit tricky sometimes.
In other words mom felt guilty and took you on a special outing, BOL
Lily & Edward
Yes, that would be true and she took me out shopping with her this week, so I’m finally getting some of that one on one attention I was missing.
it is always good to have some one on one time – makes you feel very special
It sure does and Mom says I always look so proud when we are out alone.
Looks like a great day with your mom. Siblings are nice, but one-on-one time can be awesome too. =)
I really need my mommy and me time. I’m very attached to her and it makes me feel real good.
Oh goodness, that field! What a heaven to explore! Looks like you had a fantastic hike! *wags* – Gilligan from WagsAhoy.com
Lots of fun in the woods around the lake. Tons of good sniffin’!
You sure and some fun with the Mum!
We had a great time.
One on one time is so great! We’re glad you got to really enjoy yourself with Mom and have time to just walk how you wanted to, Emma. We’re actually hoping to do some of that this weekend, some nice walks in the woods individually.
We’ve decided to make sure I get one on one time at least once a week from now on. Yay!
I’m so glad you got to have some special alone time with your Mom, Emma! It really is so important!
We need to make sure to carve out some special time for Harley. Charlie gets plenty of one on one time with his training classes, but I know Harley would enjoy some walks without the little one causing trouble and disturbing him!
Katie gets the most alone time with Mom since she walks so slow, she gets her walks alone most of the time, it is me who often gets bumped and always paired with someone else.
How nice you’re getting one-on-one time. When we had our foster pup, I had to make sure Mr. N got his special walks and playtime with me.
I used to have lots of alone time but since Bailie arrived it kind of disappeared and Mom didn’t really notice. Now we are going to plan at least one outing with me alone each week.
Being an only dog, I get all the attention. Well, until the cats try to horn in. But it’s great to have Mom all to yourself, Emma. Give her extra nose kisses for it!
Cats aren’t true competition in my house, thankfully, but my sisters can be. Mom can tell how proud I am when we are out together, so she knows it means a lot to me.
Sounds like a fun outing and you still managed to get some nice pictures.
Just a few because we wanted to just have fun without lots of interruptions.
It looks like you had a great walk. It’s lovely to have special time to ourselves with our favourite people!
I was super happy. This week I got to go shopping alone with Mom. I’m real happy we are going to plan one on one time at least once a week from now on.
Happy to see you got some Mommy and me time…
We’re making a point of doing it at least once a week now. It makes me really happy.
Mom thinks since we are so different in age and personality that it’s more fun to go one on one too.
It’s a lot of fun going on walks with my sisters so we can share the sniffin’ and stuff, but alone is really nice to so we can do what we want and we have lots of age differences too.
So glad to see that you got some one on one time with your mom. That is really important!! xo Chloe and LadyBug
It is, and it makes me so happy too.
Love the photos and nice you got some alone time (Kilo loves my attention, although not as keen on walking in snow). Late commenting as was on a business trip in Florida and I got some great beach walks in, now on way home. Hope you had a great weekend. Susie
There are no time constraints on commenting. We all have our busy times 🙂 Glad you got some beach time on your trip.
How great that you got to spend a day alone with Mom. Chester used to go everywhere with me but now, if I can only take one dog, I mostly take Gretel. Chester has to stay home while Gretel and I go speed walking too. Lately I have been thinking that I should have a special thing to do just with Chester.
With just Katie and I it was pretty easy to sort our our alone times, but now with three of us, it is much more difficult and time consuming for Mom, but we are working it out. I now get at least one alone outing a week and I love it. Mom says I am so proud when we are out and about alone.
Wow, lots of snow – hard to believe, were in the midst of a hot summer!
We actually are having a real lack of snow this winter, but some is better than none. Enjoy your summer!
