Hold on tight to your dog bed as today I’m going to answer the age old question of whether or not squirrel tastes like chicken!
It seems like everything in the world tastes like chicken. For some reason there is no squirrel flavored dog food, and those pesty critters are so hard to catch, many of us really don’t know how squirrels taste. Normally, I bake from scratch, but with the blog overhaul and other things going on, I’ve been short on time and a baking mix comes in handy because it is quick. My friend Owen from down the street sells stuff every fall for his school, and I buy a bag of cookie mix from him. Sadly, he is moving, so this will be the last bag unless some other kids find out I buy the stuff! Hint…
All I have to do is open up the package and the dough is ready to be rolled out. I’m a suspicious hound, so I always like to give it a close sniff over before I get started.
I’m in luck, it smells delicious, so I can get started rolling out the dough.
The directions are for making round cookies, but I want to make squirrel cookies, so I’m rolling it out to about 1/4″ thick, then I push my squirrel cookie cutter in to cut out the shape. Big thanks to Gramma for giving me this cool cookie cutter a couple years ago!
After lots of cutting out and rolling of dough, at last I have a baking sheet full of delicacies ready for the oven!
I pop these squirrels in the oven for about ten minutes now and try not to drool on the floor while I wait, as it makes it slippery, and Mom screams if her foot lands in drool.
Cookies come out, they cool off, and I have a plate full of these little critters! Tasting time!
Now for the answer to the age old question – Yes! Squirrels taste like chicken because my baking mix was chicken flavor! Gotcha if you didn’t read the bag in the second photo! I would love to order this mix online, but I can’t find it on the company website. I can say, it is mighty tasty especially in squirrel form!
I am joining the Tasty Tuesday blog hop sponsored by Kolβs Notes and Sugar the Golden Retriever. If you are looking for tasty ideas, take a look at what other dogs are baking and eating!
APAWS APAWS Emma, you could enter the great challenge of chefs they have on a castle here efurry year!
I wonder how your mom can take the photos, it would end in a disaster to take a photo of me next to the foodables :o)
I put my modeling career first and know if I behave nicely, I will get something good π I would love to enter a cooking contest, but they are always for humans…so discriminatory!
We were so busy looking at the chickens and squirrels in the background we forgot to study the bag! You got us! Those look yummy. You, chef Emma, are as lovely as ever. XOXO Sparkle the PBGV
I always like to decorate my kitchen for the task I’m working on. It is very motivational π
Wow Emma, yous allowed to roll out the cookie dough! Mum won’t let me….sumfinks to do with me nibbling the edges a bit. I really don’t know WHAT she means?????
Those squirrels do look yummy delicious!
Loves and licky kisses

I get to do the whole process. I’m an excellent baking dog! It is always good to taste your dough now and then to make sure it hasn’t spoiled while you were working with it.
you are such a clever girl and that is such a neat way to get your cookie dough. You know – we always wondered why there are so few squirrels around where we live – its a very wooded area, there are lots and lots of oak trees and abundance food – and then we found out it is because around here – people eat the squirrels they are considered quite the delicacy (they also catch and eat a lot of frog around here too- erk) We think your squirrels would be much better π
Oh my! I must visit your area to try real squirrel! I have no interest in frog. Mom taught us all to be scared of frogs when we were puppies. She is scared of them and didn’t want us to ever pick one up. I hear they taste like chicken, though.
Those look super yummy!
They are!
I read your blog first thing in the morning just to bring a smile to my face and this one certainly did! Just loved it.
Thank you. It makes me happy to brighten the day of others π
OMD cookies made from chicken of the trees. Yummy. We so want some of those. Have a terrific Tuesday.
Best wishes Molly
As you know actually catching a tree rat is nearly impossible, though it is on every dog’s bucket list. This is the next best thing.
Wow, Emma those looks amazing! You are the perfect baker!! Squirrels that taste like chicken, don’t have to ask us twice! BOL!
Not only is it a good flavor, it is a good feeling to finally chomp down on one of those pesty creatures!
Too bad our Tino is no longer with us because he caught and ate squirrels…we could just ask him his opinion on taste. π
I have come within inches of the prize myself, one day I will get one and I will find out the true taste. Tino is a lucky guy if he got to catch and eat some of them.
Well now! I’d say that a wee bit of a cheat Emma!!! haha! So what your telling me is….we still don’t really know if squirrel tastes like chicken?? BOL!
α¦ husky hugz α¦ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
True, I don’t know if the squirrels out in the trees taste like chicken but my squirrel cookies do. I aim to catch a tree rat one day and I will let everyone know about the flavor of a true squirrel.
You are such a great baker, who wouldn’t want to try those.
Very true, as they are tasty.
Love the squirrel cookie shapes! Ok, I guess I can wait for the down-home real squirrel recipe post, haha!
Sorry, no recipe since it was a mix and they don’t even have their product on their website, so no link there either.
Well, thanks for answering a question I never knew I had! Love the shot of the treat on the brink of your maw.
I know it is a question plaguing almost everyone, so I decided to tackle it.
Boy, those look delish Emma! I know the mix was unavailable online…but just where did you get the cool cookie cutter?
Smileys!
Dory, Jakey, Arty & Bilbo
I don’t know why they don’t sell the mix online, it would sell well I would think? My gramma bought me the cookie cutter a couple years ago at a cooking store in the area.
We want you to be our personal chef!!!
Snorts,
Lily & Edward
I could do that. I love to be in the kitchen.
Very good, Emma, you had us going for a bit there! Actually, around here the last time they tried squirrel, the dogs say it tasted like apple/cinnamon, and strangely enough the duck tasted the same way! π
I’ve had dead squirrel in my mouth, but before I could get a taste, Mom always rips it out and throws it far away π I will find out the truth one day!
BRAVO Emma…. now we know THAT answer…. On to the Next question…. Why did the Chicken Squirrel Cross the road???
To get to the nuts on the other side?
Oh Sweetie , I love when you are working in the kitchen. You look so cute in your chef’s hat and those cookies look FAB!
They are real tasty. You would love them. It’s so fun eating squirrels.
I love the title of the blog! The pictures are so fun! – Petnet(io)
Thank you. I thought it might be an attention grabber.
Oh Emma, so tricky!
I’m a sly hound sometimes.
I thought you really caught a tree rat!! I think the reason there are no real squirrel flavored treats is they are so hard to catch!! Love the colors of the new blog!
Thank you! Some day I will get myself a real squirrel, but in the meantime, these cookies are tasty. Most likely squirrel tastes like chicken, everything pretty much does.
Emma, I love your baking accomplishments! Chicken of the Trees ( how appropriate). Mom hasn’t let us bake dog bisquits for quite some time now. Perhaps she will let us make leprachaun cookies???
Chablis & Lucy
Maybe make some rainbows in the hope they lead to the pot of gold so you can buy lots of good treats?
Haha! So funny, Emma! Chicken-flavored squirrel cookies. I have to say, you have ME hungry for cookies, just maybe not chicken-flavored. Maybe peanut butter or chocolate!
Whew, I was going to say you are the first human I know with a craving for chicken cookies!
Mmm that looks good Emma! That is cool to have found some dog cookie baking mix… I bet that makes it really easy. Maybe this is the site you were looking for – http://heartlandgourmet.com/
I might have to get me some of that too…
I found the site no problem, but I can’t find this product on their site. I tried to find it last year and couldn’t either. Maybe it is only available through fundraisers.
Well Emma, you finally did it, you out did your self!!! Bravo!
My kitties like the cookies too…you might want to bake some tiny ones!
Dose cookies are da cutest!
Cute, yes, but they taste wonderful!
Those cookies look delicious, Emma! Also, just asking Zoe what squirrel really tastes like! She’s murdered two! Poor rodents. π
I’ve had a dead one in my mouth a couple times, but Mom rips them out before I have a chance to get a taste.
Those squirrel cookie cutters are awesome! The cookies look amazing. I bet they taste better because they’re squirrel shaped!
–Wags (and purrs) from Life with Dogs and Cats
I think so too. What dog could not like a squirrel?
Squirrelly, chicken-flavoured treats! Bet all the dogs love those. π Great photos, Emma. Looks like you’re a natural in the kitchen. Bon appetit!
I’m a French Scent Hound and French Chef. I love working with foodables.
I love those squirrel cookie cutters!
Thanks. Gramma finds some real fun stuff for me π
Great job Emma and they do look delicious. We all love chicken, but have never tasted chicken cookies π
Chicken cookies are a bit different, but good.
Those cookies look delicious!
They are real tasty!
Great tasty tuesday post! Loved all the photos and the treats look and sound great!
Can’t go wrong with squirrels π
Super cute squirrel cookie cutter you’ve got there Emma, do you have a rabbit one also?
We have lots of wabbit ones for Easter time.
Drool! Those look delicious and I’m excited to hear squirrel tastes just like chicken….I’ll have to try even harder to catch those squirrels in my backyard to test that theory!
One day I WILL catch one and I will let all my friends know!
You finally got to taste some squirrel? I will tell my gang the squirrels taste like chicken, maybe if they get that curiosity satisfied they’ll leave the squirrels alone. (They have strong feelings about me letting the furry-tailed rodents hang out in our yard, lol.)
I need to know the real truth, but for now, they are tasting like chicken.
Cookie is quite adamant that a squirrel taste nothing like chicken.
I’m pretty sure a real squirrel tastes much better than an old chicken!
So cute ~ I love how you made it Emma! Looks so gorgeous!
