I was at home, conducting my neighborhood watch recently when the guy in the brown truck pulled up and delivered this box of Backcountry Raw-Infused from Merrick. I was quite surprised and couldn’t wait to see what was in the box!
Backcountry is a brand new all natural, grain free, high protein ancestral diet. I opened the box and found a package of the kibble, a can of stew and a shiny new bowl. Yay!
Katie and Bailie were as curious as I was about this Backcountry, so I studied up on it and held a small seminar for them about this wonderful food. We don’t necessarily eat grain free, and Mom isn’t ready for raw, but this food is a good compromise and I think we may be switching from our current Merrick food to Backcountry. Mom says it is the food we’ve been looking for, but didn’t know we were looking for it!
Naturally, I had to sample Backcountry. I decided to start with the raw infused dry kibble which comes in four recipes: Great Plains Red, Pacific Catch, Game Bird, and Puppy. My box came with Game Bird, which is real tasty. Some of the important facts to note about this food are:
- Made in the USA
- Deboned meat is always the first ingredient
- Industry leading levels of Omega 6 & 3’s
- Industry leading levels of Glucosamine & Chondroitin
- Grain free
- Nutritional boost for high energy
- Easily digestible
- Freeze dried real meat pieces
I have to say it tastes amazing! I loved the Game Bird Recipe, but can’t wait to try the Great Plains Red Recipe as it has wabbit, along with beef and lamb! Finally a food with wabbit for me!
Since I have to watch my figure, I couldn’t eat everything so I let Bailie have a go at the Hearty Duck and Venison Stew. As you can see, she loved it and couldn’t wait for Mom to get it out of the can and into the bowl for her! Look at those nice chunks of meat in the stew! Who could wait?
It is a stew and does have gravy which means we can always store extra gravy in our beards for later as Bailie demonstrates in the above photo! A few facts about the Backcountry stew varieties:
- Grain free
- Exotic proteins
- Deboned meat is the #1 ingredient
- No Carrageenan
- Rich in protein
The Backcountry Hearty Stews come in five recipes: Salmon, Chicken Thigh, Duck + Venison, Beef, and yes, my dream, Rabbit! Everyone knows how I feel about wabbits, including Merrick! They were nice enough to send me a case of the Alpine Rabbit Stew to taste.
Oh my, it was absolutely amazing! My tongue came out, my eyes rolled back into my head, and I was in heaven! I’ve been waiting my entire life for wabbit dog food and now I have found it! The chunks of wabbit with vegetables and gravy are to howl for!
I give the Merrick Backcountry Recipes four paws up! My friends, this is seriously tasty and healthy food your dog will absolutely love!

That looks like a great food. I checked the Pacific Catch ingredients and they look really good and 34 percent protein! Thanks for sharing on the hop!
This is good stuff and perfect for us as it is a bit like raw without actually having to do the raw thing. We all love it.
That was a super review! and i like this box, that’s a perfect gift for a doggie-friend! btw: my momma is not ready for raw too… we had an awful adventure with leaf tripe once :o(
The packaging is real nice for this food, but the taste is really super. Now I will eat wabbit and wait for them to come up with a squirrel recipe…I may have to wait a long time…

Tasty review! All dogs should do backflips for those noms.
Maybe I can teach Bailie to do a backflip???
Sparkle the PBGV says
Oh, my, but that looks yummy! I am on Pro Plan shredded lamb and sweet potatoes dry food, but I easily get bored with my dry foods. Thank goodness Merrick has those wonderful canned foods to spice up any meal! XOXO Sparkle the PBGV
We don’t get bored with our kibble, but Mom likes variety which makes Merrick recipes so great. We rotate through all the recipes so we have a few weeks in a row of each kind. Keeps our taste buds busy! The canned foods are a great addition anytime!

I think the list of foods you haven’t taste tested might be shorter than the list of those you have. You should call up the Guinness Book of Records. Nice score!
I do like to taste good healthy stuff, that is for sure! I’ve learned a lot and our food habits and health I would say have improved a lot since I started blogging.

Merrick certainly is Branching Out…
They are, and I love this food. Almost as good as eating raw.

Look how nice it’s even packed

Thanks for the review Emma, we always appreciate your recommendations as we know you have great taste buds!
I am a picky eater and don’t like everything, but with wabbit, who could go wrong?
Earl Lover says
Great review thanks Emma.
High energy food for an active agility pup like you, but I don’t think it is available in the UK.
Wow Emma! How come that brown truck dude never leaves me good stuff like that? The last time he stopped at my house he left a really cool doggie bed for me, so I peed on it to let everybody know that it was mine and Mommie took it away. Stupid guy. Next time he can leave me food and I’ll eat it too fast for Mommie to get it.
Never pee on stuff in the house, shred if you have to, but don’t pee.

Great review! We are excited about Backcountry too! Loving those pictures of course. I hope Katie and Bailie learned a lot from your seminar.
They learned that super healthy food like this is awfully tasty too! Mom loves it for us, so I think we are going to be switching to it from our current Merrick kibble.
I’m going to check it out. We feed raw, but it’s hard when traveling, lots of prepping. I’m also always looking for a good emergency back up. Since I use Merrick Grain free treats, I think this might be just what I’m looking for.
Thanks for joining the blog hop!
We love it and Mom says it is the next best thing to complete raw without all that work.
Ann "Paws" Staub says
Shiner devoured all of her BackCountry food already! It really is a great food… she so loves Merrick Canned food!
We would eat it until we explode if Mom didn’t keep it locked up!

Be still my heart! ♥ We received this box too and OMD! Merrick has outdone themselves. Love, love, love!
Did you try the wabbit stew? Oh man! I’m so excited and Chewy is selling it now too so we can switch to this brand! Yum!
Reilly & Denny says
that does sound very tasty and what a great box idea
Thanks. It is wonderful food.

We got some too Emma and it smells yummy! Mom doesn’t want to do a review though but we sure liked yours! Love Dolly
I can’t help myself. When I get stuff I love, I have to post about it. It is awesome!
Jan K says
Emma, I’m not sure we’ve ever seen you quite so excited! We also received the sample pack with the dish and the dogs love the food. I’ve actually been using the kibble for Luke’s training, and the three of them split the can and loved it.
Chewy is offering it now, and we are switching because we love it and Mom thinks it would be even better than the current Merrick kibble we are eating.
It looks like Merrick has another yummy hit on their paws!
Cat bro Bert has been trying to get his paws in our bowls, so I guess kitties love it too?
We love our Merrick kibble but may have to give this version a try.
Just when we thought we were settled on our Merrick kibble, this arrived and now we are going to switch as Mom says it is even better for us and we love it.
Lauren Miller (ZoePhee) says
Oh awesome! My dogs love Merrick!
Merrick just keeps getting better and better. They are amazing!
Kari Neumeyer says
I appreciate how thorough you were with your seminar, and that you documented it for us to see!
You told us what was in Great Plains Red, and I can guess what’s in Pacific Catch and Game Bird… so that makes me a little afraid to ask what’s in the Puppy flavor!!
Since we don’t have a true puppy anymore, I didn’t pay much attention to that one but it is made the same healthy way, with chicken and salmon.
Groovy Goldendoodles says
Emma, that was a wonderful review. It was so good you almost made me hungry! LOL Nicely done, so happy you, Bailey and Katie got to enjoy the fruits of your labor!
My sisters are freeloaders. I do all the work and they get to share in the benefits…what’s a girl to do?
