Last weekend, Mom, Bailie and I took a little trip to Kinnickinnic State Park in Wisconsin. This was the first time Bailie had set her paws in Wisconsin, so she was excited to get her eighteenth state under her fur. We have now visited the same eighteen states!
We had no clue where to go. The reason for the trip was to practice tracking with a friend as Kinnickinnic Park has a ton of prairie to track in, but we went early to check the place out. We drove to the end of the road and found this lookout spot way up high over the St. Croix River.
It was beautiful, but it was also a warm day, so we opted to hike all the way down to the river. Mom was shocked as I was scared to go in the river! Bailie has no fear and was the first to dip her paws in the St. Croix River.
The water sure looked nice, super clear too! I was getting warm and since Bailie was still alive, I decided to dip my paw pads in as well.
As always when I find water I like, I lie down and make myself comfy. Nothing better than drinking from what you are sitting in. The water was cold and refreshing which was just what a couple of hot dogs needed! Bummer we didn’t have our long leashes along so we could really get in and swim. We will have them with us next time we visit!
After our little dip, it was time to hike back up the steep embankment so we could head over to the tracking fields and get to work. It is a real nice park and we plan to head back there to hike and work on tracking. It is only about an hour from our house, making it a nice day trip. One interesting thing we did find out – Wisconsin parks do not have garbage cans. This stinks in more ways than one. Of course, we had to do our business which meant we had a nice bag in the hot car all afternoon. We did survive as we opened the sunroof and windows when we started our drive home!

That looks like a wonderful park. Around here they take the trash cans out of the parks for the winter so maybe they will show up next month. π Thanks so much for joining the hop!
They actually have signs all over saying there are no trash cans ever. What you bring in, you are to take out. Around here they sometimes take them away in the winter and return for summer months, but not the case in that park.
You had a wonderful day trip! You looked so cool in the water. Happy trails to you. XOXO Sparkle the PBGV
The cold fresh water felt great!
We love how adventurous all of you are!! It is so much fun visiting new places and that park is sooo beautiful!
Mom wishes we could have more adventures, but time and money limit us a bit.
Looks like a great day. You guys are so lucky to have so many great adventures.
Mom likes us to get out and see as much of the world as we can, and she likes to find new places too.
Great day trip indeed. That water looked a little cold though. No garbage cans? That’s kind of weird.
The water was ice cold, but it doesn’t bother us at all. I swim in lakes when they still have some ice. The garbage thing was the only part of the park experience we did not like.
That looks like a great river. But weird they don’t have trash cans.
Very odd, we thought, but they state it clearly and proudly all over.
Thanks for joining the blog hop Emma. Lord I hope Mom remembered to remove that bag once she got home! One time I forgot and left it in the car overnight….I think that smell stayed in the car for like a week. π
Cool park, was it crowded or were you there early enough to beat the crowds?
We got the bag out as soon as we got home. The park was pretty empty since it is still so early in the year which we like.
Lying down in the water!! One of my favorite things to do! Great day Emma — we hope we have a day like that soon! Hooray! your doodle friend Dash
I swim too, sometimes, but I love to lie in it and drink the water around myself.
Oh my gosh, that looks like it was some excitement.

It was a ton of fun and the water was the best!
Hey Emma! Those are cool pictures of you by the river! Bailie is very very brave, but not as brave as me because when I get on the gigantic bridge over the enormous Heath Hen Brook right in my neighborhood I do a big gigantic LEAP to see if I can get to the other side!!! Aren’t you proud to know about me?? You should come see me doing gigantic leaps to jump over the brook. One day it will work and I’ll sail across the water like a flying basset hound!!
PS: you should tell your mommy to hang those stinky bags out the window of your car so they only stink up the stinkiness outside!!
Bruin
I don’t do much jumping. I like to get right in the water, cool off, and have a drink.
that was clever to wait till your sis said it’s ok…you never know … glad there was no white sharkie in that river :o)
Little sisters are useful sometimes π
What a wonderful day trip!! Mama and I recently drove over the St. Croix river, it looks very beautiful!!

Don’t tell me you went by my house on your trip and didn’t stop by?
Your dogs are soooo photogenic! Love it! We do some dog travel articles too. Perhaps we can do some together?
Thank you. We travel around the area quite a bit and take one or two big road trips a year. Let me know if you want to do something together.
That looks like a fun trip, although it sucks that the parks do not have garbage cans!! What are they thinking? Yikes!
Had we not seen the signs all over, we would never have really believed it!
That looks like a beautiful place, and doesn’t that water look clean and refreshing! I think you were just waiting for Bailie to let you know that the water wasn’t too cold. π
I was unsure about the big rocks in the water, but she seemed to be okay with them, so I hopped in too.
Wow! That is a beautiful place to practice!
The prairie fields were awesome, but the humans picked up a few ticks…I forgot to put Mom’s tick treatment on beforehand!
Take it from an expert, Emma. Laying down in the river is the bestest ever and I’m glad you got to do it. It is soooooo refreshing.
It was nice clear water, no mud, but still nice π
I woulda been in dat river right away!
It was sure nice and refreshing!
Hi Emma! My parents live in Wisconsin, only about an hour from St. Paul in a town called Menomonie. I have not yet been to Kinnickinnic State Park, but I had thought about going when I visited them last fall. They live right by the Red Cedar State Trail. I’m sure you and your mom would enjoy that trail if you ever wanted to drive another hour or so. Ace loves it there, and my parents have a springer spaniel who takes her tracking very seriously, although she does not compete like you and your sister.
Kinnickinnic is great for hiking and for tracking but you do have to buy a park pass. Mom knows Menomonie. We need to get out and go do some more hiking in parks, but we never seem to get around to it with all the other stuff going on. Tracking is a blast. If a dog competes like we do it is great, but tracking just for fun is just as wonderful. A good mental and physical workout.
Hi Y’all!
Oh that St Croix River is sure beautiful! Can’t wait to hear more about the tracking.
Y’all come on by,
Hawk aka BrownDog
It is a beautiful park and the prairies are made for tracking!
Y’all sure get to see some nice places!
We do get out a lot!
what a beautiful visit you had, such great spring pictures.
We had a real fun afternoon.
OMD! Such amazing photos!!!
α¦ husky hugz α¦ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
Thanks. It was a fun time.
Such beautiful lakes and parks in MN. But now I’ve got to find out how to pronounce this park LOL
We are surrounded by those Indian names. Mom grew up in Wayzata…another funny but shorter one!
Nothing like a full poop bag in a cozy car! I keep a small counter-top compost pail (with a stink-filter) in the back of my van for when we can’t find trash bins. It works wonderfully, even when I forget to empty it out right when I get home.
We’ve never really had a problem finding a trash can before, but now we know for next time.
What a beautiful park. Our mom lived in Wisconsin near a Kinnickinnic Avenue. We don’t have any fun names where we live now.
Here in “indian” country there are fun names all over, but we forget how odd they are since we are around them all the time.
