If you want to find out how to get lost hiking in a circle, simply go out with my mom! At least she admits she is directionally challenged! Let’s think back to the drive to BlogPaws in Vegas last year shall we? Mom had no clue Utah was between CO and NV and she didn’t realize we had to drive through mountains. This lack of direction is how she ended up in snow with just shorts and a t-shirt. Good thing she has us to help her out.
We went to Alimagnet Park. They have a dog park we go to in the winter, but they also have trails in the woods which go by the lake. We thought it would be fun to do some hiking around there.
Because Mom knows she gets lost easily, she printed out the trail map and said it would be so easy, we couldn’t get lost. It was a circle, anyone can do the hike without getting lost. We wanted to take the long trail, the blue one, so we started off at the first star on the right on the map.
At first it was pretty easy, we found trail signs, we passed the dog park, and we found the lake.
Somewhere after the lake we made a wrong turn. We were busy playing balancing games on the downed trees and taking photos which was fun. At the time we didn’t know we were off course.
I pushed down this huge tree…T…I…M…B…E…R… I wasn’t aware of my strength.
Bailie tried to seriously climb a tree, but it was a bit steep for her.
It was starting to get a bit warm, and of all things, Mom had to go potty. This was the point we realized we were lost, not really lost, but no clue where we were. Our thirty to forty minute hike was at an hour and Mom had no clue how to get back to the car. Bailie and I could figure it out, but she didn’t know how to get us to track back to the car.
Our experienced navigator decided to turn around and go back, but guess what…she messed that up too! Suddenly we were in the middle of a disc Frisbee course, interfering with teenage boys trying to have some kind of competition. How embarrassing!
No matter, we eventually found the car, and Mom found a bathroom. We are all healthy, in shape beings, so we can handle the extra mileage. We were back were we started in about eighty minutes. If you want to know how to get lost in a circle, simply head out with my mom, she is a pro at it!

Actually a few years ago we took Lexie and Mica up to a lake that had colored trails of different Lengths. We were following one color, well marked, but we were taking pictures and wound up on a different color. Luckily a couple walking pointed us in the right direction:)
We asked one lady, but she seemed more confused than we were, so we decided to figure it out on our own.
It’s a good thing that she has y’all to lead her around! Mom never takes road trips by herself because she doesn’t like driving on the interstates! ROFL!
We are fortunate our car talks to Mom and tells her exactly where to go. If that wasn’t the case, we would need to leave for Nashville like a month in advance to make sure we would be able to find it on time!
At least your momma found da bathroom eventually, BOL!
She is so odd, won’t just go when she needs to in the woods like we do.
WE think that’s odd too, so of course, we follow her in to that room where she goes and sits on that weird porcelain thingy. Humans!!!
Humans can be a bit tough to understand, but I keep trying.
maybe you can take a bag with bread crumbs with you? that makes it easier to find the way back :o) we should have a hiking event again in blogville, I remember how much fun we had at Gizmo’s Geocaching day :o)
Mom says in the past in Germany, she did actually make arrows on the ground out of sticks just in case. That was before my time when she live in areas with lots of forests and she had a different dog.
My assistant is challenged in many ways as well. She would have made the map and then lost it or left it in the car. I think Easy has a great idea about the breadcrumbs.
Maybe even some colored spray paint to leave dots on the ground?
We are busy giggling here and admiring the pretty pictures. Emma, do NOT let your mom go to Washington DC as there is a circle there and once you get on the darn thing you may never escape until your vehicle runs out of gas! I am wondering if your mom’s phone could have directed you out of the park? Loved your adventure. XOXO Sparkle the PBGV
Mom and her phone are not good friends, but it could have helped most likely. It wasn’t like we were out in a forest miles from civilization, so there was no danger. Just a simple walk in a smaller woods, but still, she got lost!
The mom and her cell phone are not good friends either. She uses it so very little she had a monthly payment plan with Boost, but she used it so little she now has a Tracfone. Silly Moms! Sparkle
We use ours mostly for the hot spot, then email, then texting, then phoning. Apps, rarely get used.
Poor Mom! Maybe y’all need to buy her a compass!
She has one on her phone, but she can’t make sense of it. She is hopeless!
LOL it still sounds like a fun hike. Our Golden was great at hiking because he could always find the trail back. We never had to worry about getting lost.
Mom never knows if we are looking for the way back, or tracking critters, so we aren’t much help.
Glad you guys got home. I would have missed you!
I think if we go hiking in Yellowstone or something we would check in with a park ranger so they would know to search for us. Mom just can’t get it right, but we get lots of extra hiking in this way.
Oh Emma! Mommies are so silly. I got lost in the woods once and my Mommie called everybody she knew to help her look for me. She wandered all over yelling my name, but I did not listen to her because I was already back at the car, climbing up my favorite mountain of dirt. I love mountains of dirt.
Bruin
If we were off leash it would be hours before we would go to the car since we chase critters and wouldn’t want to quit that.
Walking in CIRCLES???? You had us “STUMPED” with this one…. BaaaaaWaaaah.
LOL! Good one!
BOL! Thanks for the Friday morning smiles π Pretty sure I could get lost too…super irritating when the human has to go potty on top of it. Been there, done that…
Mom is hopeless, but she knows it. A few years back we went with Mom and a friend hiking, we were all so lost, the friend had to call a neighbor to pick up her daughter from school because we couldn’t find our way back to the car in time! A never ending story at my place!
Haha…at least you got a nice big long hike out of it!
That is the bright side of Mom’s “deficiency”.
I’m in the same boat. I get lost driving from Chicago to NJ, and it’s one road. The nice part about pups is they never mind a few detours.
Thankfully, we have a lady in the car who tells Mom how to drive, and just in case, Mom brings along a print out of where we are going too. If the lady wasn’t in our car, we could not travel!
it has happened to us too – Mom decides to follow a trail we have never been down before and 3 hours later we wonder f it was such a good idea,
Yep, that sums it up for us too!
Oh that looks like a beautiful area! You always have fabulous hiking photos! We enjoy finding beauty in our surroundings here when we walk, but I still wish we had some great hiking areas around here though!!
α¦ husky hugz α¦ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
Lots of great walking places here, but it would be nice if Mom would stop getting lost all the time.
Usually the only time I get lost is when I’m in need of a bathroom, too! That makes being lost even worse! Glad you found your way back to the car eventually.
Poor moms. If only you all weren’t so shy about peeing in the bushes. Luckily, mom usually gets so busy trying to find her way back to the car, she forgets about the bathroom issue for a while at least.
Too funny. Isn’t it always when you need a bathroom that you realize you are lost. My husband is “directionally challenged”- it’s almost infallible he will choose the wrong path in a new place. Thank goodness for GPS and smart watches and smart phones. Have a great weekend. See you soon in Nashville (I hope LOL) X Susie & Kilo
We have the lady in the car who tells Mom where to go, otherwise we would need to leave months in advance to make it on time.
Whoa what a beautiful hike. You better lead mom from now on
Snorts,
Lily & Edward
The problem is we prefer off road, following critters and she likes to stay on the paths.
HA! Our mom does this kind of stuff too. She got lost reading your map!! We never really mind because, hey! We are outside hiking and being with mom. Great photos. Good work knocking down that tree. You are strong. your doodle friend Dash
We know never to go on a hike if we have a specific time frame as we may not make it in time!
That’s funny! I’m glad you made it out ok!
It wasn’t a huge forest or something, but geez, how can she get turned around so easily?
BOL! This is a little like hiking with Dad. You would think a SAR person wouldn’t get lost so easily, but unless he has his equipment, he is hopeless. Mom has a natural sense of direction, thank dog, and she started tracking us on MapMyHike so at least she could figure out how to turn us around and go back the way we came after Dad got us hopelessly lost a few years ago!
Bunny
LOL! Mom has a compass on her phone, but she can’t figure out how to use it correctly. Oh well, we are used to being lost.
Joy, remind me to never hike with you – I also am directionally challenged and have gotten lost taking folks on hikes in woods that I had marked myself for botany specimens. VERY embarassing!! I also once got my eight year old niece lost in a wooded area that I hiked weekly. She was leery of hiking with me after that
Mom gets lost on the tracks she lays for tracking for us too and there are markers and everything. It is really bad with her!
Oh Emma, you make me laugh! At least your mom got you back to the car. My husband gets lost in grocery stores – he’ll walk off towards the wall and I’ll say, “Where are you going?” He says, “To the register.” “I thought so, but that’s the other way.” XD
Oh my, no, Mom is not that bad! Just outdoors she gets lost a lot.
I would get lost too in a circle, beautiful photos thou!
It appears I’m definitely not alone in owning a human with this issue!
We soooooo get it! Our Mama gets so caught up in pictures sometimes that she loses all sense of direction!!
Smileys!
Dory, Jakey, Arty & Bilbo
Mom doesn’t even need to get caught up, she just wanders in the wrong direction easily!
I MAY become a little lost in a circle, but my dogs would sniff us out again.
sumskersandearlskers13.blogspot.com
Bailie and I had no problem finding our way, but Mom doesn’t trust us in the woods as we may be tracking critters.
Your Mom sounds like my sister who has no sense of direction! Mine is usually pretty good, but my sister and I got a little lost on a hike not too long ago. We couldn’t find the turn in the trail…we had forgotten it had crossed a river. Luckily some other people came a long to set us in the right direction!
Mom was too embarrassed to ask the school boys so we pretended we knew what we were doing.
That’s so funny! … But it’s happened to us too! Some of the trails here are pretty poorly marked so you can easily find yourself on the wrong trail. Glad you eventually made it back!
It always gives us more hiking time at least.
Emma, you are very strong. We have some trees that need to be removed and would love to call on your services should you visit the Rochester, NY area. I am glad that you located your car. Mom has done this more times that I care to count!
It sounds to me like many humans suffer from this problem. I feel better knowing our mom isn’t the only one.
It’s easy to get disoriented in the woods. Sounds like you had a great adventure though. And trust me, I live in Colorado and it is quite easy to get lost here-just have to remember the mountains are in the west and then you can figure it out. π Happy weekend. π
Sounds easy, but I have the Mom that didn’t realize we had to drive through the mountains to get from Denver to Vegas last year. We are lucky we made it!
I have no sense of direction either! Which is why I don’t go hiking by myself.
That is a smart idea!
I can relate! I get lost going to the airport. Give us Mom’s a break. It’s great that no one panicked and you were able to make an adventure out of it.
Since it happens all the time, we are used to it and plan accordingly!
Haha good one Em! Silly mom didn’t she know she could go potty in the woods? Don’t tell but that’s what mom started doing in Tibet because the bathrooms were so horrid. Just so she knows next time! Love Dooly
Mom has in the past in the real woods where the chances of seeing another human were pretty much zero, but here, lots of people in the area, so no, not going to try it.
