Mom took Bailie for a sniff in the park the other day. Bailie is a super friendly dog, but although she loves other dogs, she is always afraid to play with them. Mom thought maybe if they went to the dog park it would help Bailie get more courage to play with other dogs.
Bailie started out strutting her stuff, looking like the queen of the park when no one was around.
She came upon a couple dogs who wanted a good sniff of her. As you can see, she wasn’t the least bit interested and was hoping they would soon go on without her.
Back to the woods after that event. Sniffing out critters on her own was much more fun.
The next dog she met was a total ham. He was bouncing of everything and even jumped over Bailie trying to get her to play, but she was not interested.
Running through the woods by herself seemed to be the most fun for Bailie. She must have caught the scent of something.
They came upon another group of dogs, three of them this time. Bailie was still not interested. Nothing any of the dogs could do would motivate her to play. She has played with other dogs at this park before, but no interest on this particular day.
It was back into the woods for our little hound. She could spend all day in there I think.
After about forty minutes Mom decided it was hopeless. Bailie wanted to be by herself tracking critters, not playing with other dogs, so they left. Mom called her and Bailie happily came to get her leash on and head back home. She had fun, but just not the fun Mom had envisioned. I guess she just wants to sniff through life.
One last reminder! Our Zuke’s Genuine Steak Jerky giveaway is ending tonight, so make sure you enter today if you haven’t already! Winner receives all three flavors! Good stuff!
Too many good smells in the woods that smell better than the dogs. Maybe next time.
She just had zero interest in other dogs.
Useful information. Lucky me I discovered your site by chance, and I am surprised why this coincidence did not happened in advance! I bookmarked it.
you know – if you took her to the park every day for a week – we bet she would start playing – Denny is exactly the same way – and the few days he spent at the doggie resort made a huge difference – he is much more confident now after being around a lot of dogs
She has been going to daycare once a week for almost two years and she never plays. She always picks a spot where she can see all that goes on and just lies there and watches the other dogs all day. If we are out walking, she wants to meet every dog. It just makes no sense.
I guess she had other stuff on her mind. I can be like that too. She was overwhelmed with other smells and could no be bothered by silly doggie games. XOXO Sparkle the PBGV
She does take critter tracking very seriously. It’s okay she doesn’t want to romp with the others, but Mom thought it would be so fun. She doesn’t play with others at daycare either. She only wants to play when we meet dogs on our walks.
She’s just a sweet introvert…extracts more pleasure from her own company 🙂
I think so, and she loves humans.
Some dogs just don’t want to play. We see dogs sometimes that Torrey really wants to play with, and they are not at all interested.
I guess she is that way. At least she likes to play with me in our yard.
It does seem like you had fun Bailie! I guess it’s OK to be a loner 🙂 You can always play with your sisters.
She loves to chase and wrestle with me in the yard, and she plays with Bert in the house a lot. She is a true people lover, but none of the people wanted to play chase with her at the dog park.
Every pup enjoys life in their own way. Like you say, as long as Bailie enjoyed herself that’s all that matters.
Tracking has always been her favorite thing since day one and she is good at it. I guess it makes her happy enough. At least she plays with me at home and she used to play with Katie when Katie still played tug a war or chase.
Oh Bailie! You can get into so much more trouble with other dogs!
She seems to prefer to keep to herself and do some good critter tracking. She is saving energy to play with me in the yard.
Emma, Bailey knows not to react to the first few sniffs she gets LOL It’s not lady-like!
I guess she is proper because she does sit down so no one can butt sniff her.
As long as Bailie had fun, that’s all that counts, right?? I am the same way with doggies when I first meet them. No sniffs until at least our third meeting!
Smileys!
Dory
Bailie seems to prefer human company, but at least she sits when strange dogs try to sniff her “private areas”. I love to sniff others, but don’t like to be sniffed.
Pierre says that Bailie is not anti-social, she just has VERY high standards. He also said that she is a great dancer! ♥
She has her super wild side which I think she saves for her special friends. There is nothing wrong with having a few select great friends and leaving the others to find other friends.
I guess Bailie knows what she likes…and that’s sniffing things out more than playing with other dogs. Cricket used to be like that too, when we used to have my sister’s beagles over. She would ignore them completely in favor of playing ball. We used to call her a rude hostess, ignoring her guests…LOL.
Oh, those ball obsessed dogs always make us crazy! We simply can’t understand it. Our cousin Lena is like that and it is so frustrating!
Well, it looks like you had fun Bailie and that is all that is important!!!
She did have fun, just not what Mom had planned.
Bailey would be a good playmate for Scout. He likes other dogs, but doesn’t want to be sniffed. He just wants to be around them. He does really well with senior dogs who aren’t interested in sniffing his butt.
I don’t like my butt sniffed either. We are proper girls I guess.
Did you find anything good out there
Lily & Edward
Just lots of smells to track, no actual critter sightings.
Hey she had fun, got exercise; and give her a break – she was one of 14?? Think she got played out in her first 8 weeks of life!
I do think she enjoys living in a smaller family. It may seem like a lot of pets to most, but for her, it is a small number!
They need a “small fun-to-smell-critter park” for you to go to!
A scent park, what a great idea! I wonder how to set one up? Dogs would love it!
I love to talk with other dogs and play. My sister does not. To each dog his/her own, I guess! Bailie sure looks cute in every photo!! your doodle friend Dash
Bailie is super social, but not so much with dogs I guess. She had fun anyway.
She just needs Huxley! He and Bailie had so much fun together in Nevada. My guys tend to be very particular about who they make friends with… I am too! It’s understandable that some days are just better suited for a sniffing stroll and some might be the right time for sniffing with friends!
Bailie and I are both pretty selective with our friends. Katie was always the one who wanted to play with everyone, but these days she can’t play anymore. As long as we are happy, it doesn’t really matter.
Delilah is the same way at the park, usually off by herself sniffing for anything good to eat. 🙂 Sampson likes to hang by the people, he is just a big sponge for affection.
It basically got to the point where I didn’t want to waste my time, they are more than happy to walk in the woods near our home and occasionally we meet some dogs up there.
Happy New Year Emma (just in case I haven’t said it yet.) 🙂
Katie and I went to dog parks all the time for a few years, but then I started not liking it so much and Katie couldn’t keep up with the other dogs which frustrated her, so we quit. Bailie and I go together sometimes, but we usually end up taking off after critters which causes Mom to panic, thus, she thought maybe just one dog would be good, but she could just as well have taken Bailie for a walk.
Awe, poor Bailie.. Some dogs just don’t trust other dogs enough to play. Phoenix is like that most of the time, too!
Bailie is pretty skeptical of other dogs. She prefers to just do her own thing I guess.
Sometimes ya just gotta sniff.
and we scent hounds love to sniff!
Anne and Abbe are both that way. They are happy to just do their own thing and observe. She seemed to be really enjoying herself when she was out exploring 🙂
Her favorite thing in the world to do is tracking. She even tracks stuff in the house, so I guess it makes her happy just sniffin’ on her own.
I love all the interesting smells in the woods. I’m glad Bailie had fun, even if it wasn’t the planned fun!
She is a true hound and loves to sniff.
I guess Bailie would rather work than mess around with other dogs at the park. 🙂
Now if she can apply that principal to trials this year, we will be in good shape!
I prefer a good sniff of the ground too than other dogs most of the time so us hounds understand each other! Love Dolly
I guess so. When I was younger I would single out a couple dogs to play with a bit, but I’ve never been big on getting wild and crazy with a strange pack either.
Nothing wrong with a good sniff. Way to stay focused on whatever it was! 😉
Wow, this reminds me so much of Lexus. Not that she is scared of other dogs really, but any time we go to the dog park, she would much rather run around and sniff things all by herself instead of playing with other dogs.
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
That is our Bailie. At daycare she finds a central spot to lie down and she just stays there and watches all the other dogs until Mom comes back and gets her.
