Any bets on who will win at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show this year? The only thing I know for sure is it won’t be a GBGV since we are still not part of the hound group. I guess I will cheer on the PBGV’s once again.
This is the 140th year of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. It will be held at Madison Square Garden, Monday and Tuesday, February 15th and 16th. Hundreds of dogs from across the country come to Madison Square Garden to compete in categories such as Best in Group and Best in Show. Will you be going? Would you like to go? If you are not going, be sure to watch the show on CNBC and USA channels.
Back in October 2013, I dabbled my paws in my one and only dog show experience. I had a blast, but Mom was clueless. Everyone said I did fabulous for just showing up out of the blue with no formal show training or experience. My breeder said it is because I was born a Debucher and just know what to do, LOL! Remember, my fancy show name is Debucher Baguette.
The GBGV is still a rarity in the USA. When I first moved here, we were in the Foundation Stock Services division of the AKC, but in 2015 because of all the hard work the GBGV’s have been doing in shows and titles, we moved to the Miscellaneous Class. The next step is to become full AKC recognized and added to the Hound Group. I don’t know much about all of this since we aren’t interested in showing, but the last big hurdle we need to over come is to have at least 300 GBGV’s in the USA with at least three generation pedigrees. We are still about fifty short, which isn’t bad, but it is still a lot.
Had I wanted to be a show dog, I would be a perfect specimen. There are many criteria that go into judging a breed, and I seem to possess all of them. For my mom it really isn’t very important, but for folks who want a show dog it matters, a lot! Bailie for example, is a couple inches too tall so she wouldn’t make it as a show dog.

My mom would sell her soul on eBay to go to Westminster or Crufts with me ( no one wants it, zero bids lol). Butt sadly the “working dogs”rarely make it to the winner’s podium and the way to Crufts or Westminster is long and bumpy and even spiked with traps :o) I’m always a little sad that you are not a part of the hound group… come on AKC add the GBGV, it’s one of the bestest hunting breeds of France!
I think a Cavalier could have a good chance this year …. :o)
I have to go with the PBGV, but they never win either. Kuvasz never wins, bummer!
You really do not want to close the stud book before you have enough dogs so best not rush that. It will happen eventually. Good luck to all who enter the give-away.
Personally, I enjoy being a rare breed no one knows about, but when I sign up for stuff, it would be nice to be able to have my breed on the list of choices.
I had no idea…you are best in show in my eyes.
Thank you. We aren’t real concerned with showing, just being part of a healthy breed is what we are after.
I’ve wanted to go to Westminster for decades. Last month I realized that I’m going to be 48 this year, so I’d better stop wishing and start planning. My girlfriends and I set up Westminster accounts. I reopened an old savings account and I’m sterling and all the change that I can find. The plan is to go to Westminster for my 50th birthday.
As for who will win? I’ve got my money on Rumor, the German Shepherd. She’s absolutely gorgeous. A GSD hasn’t won since the 80’s, so it’s about time!
I have to vote for a PBGV or a Kuvasz, but I know neither will win.
Some day, Emma, some day the GBGV will be a recognized member of the hound group.
I think the AKC is afraid we will win it all, all the time, so they are holding back.
Maybe so, Emma. ?
I don’t think any of my huskies would quite cut it to be a show dog. As far as breed standards go, Mika is a little heavier than she should be, Koda’s ears are a little too wide set, and Lexus is a little on the small side lol. But I love them just the same.
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
I would be a good show dog, and I have the attitude, but Mom isn’t interested, so I’m a sports dog instead.
Whooooa! Hopefully one of us
Lily & Edward
Are you guys entered??? 😉
I think being a show dog would be a lot of work. Torreys dad is a show dog, she gets her good looks from him.
I come from a line of big title show dogs, so I could have been one too in Europe, but Mom didn’t want to show. I’m happy being in sports.
We know EXACTLY who will win the show – drum rollllllllll – it will be A DOG 🙂 🙂 🙂
Yes, you win the prize for best guess!
At least GBGVs have a decent excuse for never winning. Ridgebacks never come close to winning, but we still get a kick out of cheering them on.
Poor Katie and the Kuvasz breed never win either. Judges seem to have favorite breeds I think.
Faraday: *raises paw* Me?
If you can muscle your way past all the dogs 😉
We always root for the Basset Hound then go through all of the different breeds of dog we’ve had over the years. LOL! We got lucky when a German Shepherd won a few years back. A Beagle won but that is probably as close as we will get to a Basset. I’ll keep my paws crossed for the GBGV to join the show. If they were offering air fare to NYC, I’d love to win. ☺
No airfare 🙁 We hope for the Kuvasz or the PBGV, but neither ever wins.
We are cats but we always watch the dog show, it’s fun!
For cats the best way to hang out with dogs is to watch us on TV, right?
Oh Emma, we are still in the foundation stock service. It says so on my AKC Certificate of Wonderment, and the AKC would never lie about that. My breeder said that there are only about 200 registered GBGVs in this country and there need to be 300. At least that’s what I think she said – I really wasn’t paying attention.
Anyway, I’m not going to think one of those runty little PBGVs will win because that wouldn’t be fair. I’m going to guess it will be a Dogue de Bordeaux, because they look like sea monsters!
Bruin
We were FSS, but moved to miscellaneous class in 2015. Our certificates say FSS because they don’t issue new ones when the group changes. I believe the current count is 254. One day the GBGV will be in the show and take it over. Who wouldn’t want one of us to be Best In Show!
We think you would be a shoe in for Best in Show, Emma! I like to watch the show on TV, and I bet it would be exciting to actually be there too, but going into the big city is too much excitement for me – LOL – we’ll stick to TV. We were excited that beagles have won twice now (I think, unless I’m confusing this one with other shows). I wonder if a golden retriever has ever won?
The Beagles have won this one a few times, but I don’t recall any goldens winning. No Kuvasz either.
Our Mama isn’t too interested in dog shows….but Arty thinks he is a super model and would win for sure!!
Smileys!
Dory, Jakey, Arty & Bilbo
The only one we usually pay any attention to is Westminster. I could be a show dog, but Mom has no desire to show dogs.
That is exactly what I think, Emma. It’s a conspiracy. And I think poodles are at the heart of it.
Bruin
Poodles. That’s who.
That’s sweet to give these away! My sister’s collie was supposed to be competing but blew her coat. If she was going I would be entering your contest like crazy! Lol
Just another reason Mom doesn’t want to show dogs, something natural happens like blowing a coat and you can’t compete. It is still fun to watch this one on TV, though.
Oh, Emma, I think you’re a blue-ribbon girl whether the AKC recognizes you or not! We’ll be glued to the television for the show. We may have to restrain my sister!
Thank you. It will be fun watching the show on TV, but if they had GBGV’s in the hound group it would be so much more exciting!
Attending Westminster is on my bucket list! I use to dream of it when we showed the boys, before I realized how much work and money it would be to get there. Now I would just love to go for the experience.
It would really be a huge amount of time, effort, and money to get into that show, but if showing is your thing, why not? Hope you get there one day.
I’ll be watching for the Lab and the weimaraner!
I wonder why? Those are two other fairly popular breeds that don’t seem to win either.
I love to watch the show and see all the breeds. Newfs rarely win, I only saw 1 but it’s still fun to see the dogs that make it in. I enjoy watching at home:)
We watch on TV too, and Newfs don’t usually win, but we do love Newfies.
Of course I want the Chessie to win but sadly it probably won’t
It does seem like some breeds never get to win.
We used to watch that every year, but would usually end up bummed cuz the dogs we routed for (usually the beagle) never won. Well, finally when Uno the gorgeous beagle won that one year, it was the pinnacle of watching for us, so I gave up after that. Went out on a high note. 🙂 I do so love the hounds! Hope the GBGVs make it in some day. I’m sure you’re doing great work to make the breed more popular, Emma.
We always like to watch it, but if a dog we don’t car for is winning we won’t always watch it to the end.
There’s an AKC show here this weekend, mom may go. There’s also an IKC show in February, would you be able to come to Chicago for it?
IKC or UKC show? Our weekends for February are pretty full already with sports classes, meetings, and practicing.
Well, I can’t even enter this because I’ll be in DC/Virginia that week, but congrats to whoever wins! I would be in dog heaven!!! I feel I must root for Shih Tzus, but Newfies were always my “dream dog,” I do love a hound…they usually have fantastic ears and noses, for obvious reasons!
What on earth does “blowing a coat” mean?! #SoMuchToLearn
That big shedding event is blowing a coat. Have the Shih Tzus even won yet?
Emma, that is so cool that you are perfect but you are perfect in your Mommy’s eyes no matter what!! And this is an awesome giveaway. We will be watching the dog show for sure.
It’s always a lot of fun to watch.
