Dehydrated dog food? “How good could this be”, is what I was wondering when the box from Spot Farmsโข showed up at my door. It turns out, I’m absolutely wild about this food!
Have you heard of Family Owned Spot Farms? Spot Farms makes food and treats for dogs with the finest of ingredients. Theyย partner with farms around the country to get regionally grown chicken, turkey, and pork raised without antibiotics. The company takes a lot of pride in their products which are:
- Made in the USA
- Made with all natural, human grade ingredients
- Made using wholesome healthy recipes to deliver dogs the best nutrition
Whatโs in the Spot Farms Chicken & Whole Grain Recipe?
We have never had dehydrated dog food before, so this was all new. Chicken & Whole Grain Recipe sounded good, but would be something a picky eater like me would like? The first surprise was the food being more of a powder not actual pieces of dehydrated food. I wondered how that would work out. According to the box, the food contains antibiotic free chicken from North Carolina, apples, blueberries, spinach, sweet potato, and carrots. Sounds too healthy to be tasty, doesn’t it?
How does one make dehydrated dog food?
Making a portion of food is super simple. All you have to do is measure out a portion of the dehydrated dog food, add the water in a 1:1.5 ratio, stir on and off for about three minutes and eat! The waiting a few minutes was the hardest part!
Is there a transition plan?
The amount of food your dog will need per day is listed on the box. You will need to adjust it depending on lifestyle, and age of your dog. It is also recommended to divide the portion in two and feed your dog twice a day. Dogs of any age and life stage can eat the Spot Farms Dehydrated Food. To avoid any sensitive tummy issues, start feeding the new food in smaller amounts mixed in with your current food. For our food, we spent a few days eating half kibble, half dehydrated food for our meals. We had no digestion issues whatsoever, so we switched over quickly to all dehydated food. Our Spork works really great for mixing up this food!
Will your dog like dehydrated dog food?
My mom was wondering if we would like this type of food as we have mainly eaten dry kibble for most of our lives. As you can see in the photo, I didn’t want to wait the long three minutes to eat. It smelled so good, I started eating the powder before it was hydrated. Being as I am very picky with food, my eating the powder surprised my mom and said a lot about the taste!
I had no problem finishing my portion and then sneaking in to try to steal Bailie’s portion right out of her bowl on the counter. Mom says that kind of behavior is out of character for me, so it must be super tasty! Bailie feels the same way about this food – she absolutely loves it, and cat bro Bert has been caught trying to sneak a bite as well! Mom loves it too because it is healthy for us.
Because I love Spot Farms dehydrated dog food so much, I made a short video for you showing how easy it is to whip up a meal, eat, and at the end I have a little surprise for you. I do something else that is also out of my lady like character, a bit puppy like actually. Enjoy!
What is the overall opinion?
My GBGV Life gives Spot Farms Dehydrated Dog Food all paws up! Spot Farms Chicken & Whole Grain Recipe is very tasty, easy to make, about as healthy as one can get, and we like that the company is family owned and really cares about dogs. What are Mom’s concerns about this food? It is more like eating oatmeal than crunching kibble pieces, but we do eat our treats and have our chews to keep our chompers in shape. It is only available in chicken, turkey, or pork right now, not a lot of protein variety. Do you think you will give Spot Farms Dehydrated Dog Food a try? I mean your dog…you could eat it as a human, but please don’t steal from your dog!

So easy and yummy! Looks like you are saving some for later in your beard! Love your video!!! ๐
Beards are good for that purpose. I love this food.
Here in Doodleville once we started with The Honest Kitchen’s dehydrated food it was hard to go back to kibble. Harley wouldn’t hear of it! LOL so happy to hear you liked it Emma. Enjoy!
It’s hard to go from really great food to not as great food. We are in the middle of deciding on switching permanently to dehydrated or freeze dried food, but we still do like out kibble.
We’d like to get out slobber into some of that!
You boys could just drool over the powder and stir. No need to add water!
I am a very picky eater too. I might like that food. I too could make “beard soup” in the water bowl cleaning my furs when I get a drink. XOXO Sparkle
My mom was shocked at my behavior because I’m not a fan of eating and am so picky, but I was stealing this food every chance I got!
I like this kind of food, it is better than common kibble and easier to storage… thanks for a beardlicking good review… I have only 3 hears on my chin, but it’s the thought what counts, right?
There is something wrong in the world because you as a man dog have no beard, and me as a lady dog have a big beard? What is up with that?
We eat dehydrated food and it makes us so healthy and happy. I’m glad that you like it too. We love Spot treats!
The Spot treats make a nice dessert to a dehydrated meal!
We love dehydrated treats so I’m sure we would enjoy the food
Snorts,
Lily & Edward
These guys have been on dehydrated food for several years. It’s nice to see a new brand out there though. I’ll have to check it out.
We have never tried it, but we sure like it.
OH MY DOGS that chef hat is the cat’s meow you look so cute!!
Hugs madi your bfff
Thank you. I have several that match my aprons for when I’m in the kitchen. I try to keep my furs out of my cooking, LOL!
jAll paws up is terrific and that was a yummy review!
Thanks. I love this food!
How do serving sizes work with dehydrated foods? And any idea about how many servings were in your box? Looks the pups loved it!
That is the one thing Mom forgot to figure out. The box lasted us about two weeks, but we also started out with less than full portions. For us the recommended portion is 1 3/4 โ 2 2/3 cups which the 30 – 50 lb category. We were getting around 2 cups a day each when it was our only food. As with any food, we played around a bit with portion size. It’s real handy because you can carry it with you, no refrigeration needed and it is ready to eat in a couple minutes. It also comes in grain free.
OMD…Looks like you are really enjoying this food, Emma! We love the way you show you want seconds too!

I kind of lost my mind and manner with this food! It is really tasty!
We would definitely try this! I’m not sure if we’d give up kibble completely for it – we like the crew to get that crunch too. As thoroughly as you’re enjoying it, Emma, even going after the box to get more, we know the crew would love it too!
My mom didn’t expect me to like it at all, but I was nuts for it. We are considering adding it to our rotation which also includes some crunchable food.
Mmmm, looks yummy! How long of a shelf life does it have? My understanding of dehydrated food is that it can be stored for many years with no negative effect?
Now that is a good question. We were done with the package in about two weeks, so I’m not sure how long one could keep it. Once mixed, it can be refrigerated for a day.
That food reconstitutes quickly which is great for a dehydrated food. It looks yummy.
The waiting is the hardest part, so we like how fast it is ready.
Wow wee delish. Never heard of spot farms.
Lookin Good
I like dehydrated food. It is convenient and quite easy to storage. Pets like this kind of food, too.Thank you for sharing.
We are nuts about it!
Really love this post. It’s really meaningful for me. I’m looking for something alternative for my Brian. Thanks a lot for sharing.
P/s: those photos are perfect ๐
Thank you. It has been a learning process for us too. Food is quite a jungle!
Thanks for sharing this interesting post! The dehydrated food looks tasty, even for me! Haha… I’ll find if the pet shop near my house has this kind of product. Btw, I love the cute costume in these pics.
If you check on the Spot Farms website, they do have a store locator. The food is super tasty!
I like your review about dehydrated food, looks yummy… ๐
absolutely agree with you Emma, the hardest thing is waiting for the food ready even for a few minutes ๐
Thank you. It is real tasty food but the waiting it is tough. Luckily, it only takes a few minutes for the food to hydrate.
When I make it I usually just stir it until I don’t see anymore powder and it thickens a bit and then give it to my dog ๐ I have been doing that since I started her on it and have not had any problems.
I have changed my Great Dane to this food and she has been on it about two months now and loves it! She has always been a picky eater and I have not had her tested. It I’m sure she has allergies because with some of the foods I have tried her on she has thinning hair around eyes and itching them along with licking her paws… some of the foods made her extreamly gassy or vomit. She is now two years old and I wish I would have known about Spotfarms dog food sooner!!! Since being on the food her coat looks AMAZING! She feels softer, sheds less hair, her “bathroom habits” are much more normal and she has not had diarrhea or vomiting. As most dog owners I was concerned about her not liking it because she has always been on dry kibble but she took to the food immediately and prefers it over any of her dry kibble! I do still give her dental chews “sticks” morning and night to keep her teeth clean and gums healthy. I give spot farms dog food two thumbs up and Leia gives it four paws up!!!!
It’s a bit odd eating more of an oatmeal like consistency food, but we sure love it!
i saw the dry food mix on the shelf but i have never bought it before. I thought dogs would prefer to chew on something crunchy so i usually pass. But after reading your post i’ll definitely think again
