Hounds better get ready to move over a spot or so in dog shows starting next year! Have you heard the AKC news?
It is official, the GBGV breed will move into the AKC Hound Group on January 1, 2018! I was in one dog show in the fall of 2013, but that was it. As you can see, I was happy as a clam to run around the ring. I think Madison’s mom was in front of me in the photo! My mom has no desire to show dogs, but being accepted into the Hound Group means more than dog shows.
When I first moved to the US, the GBGV was in the FSS Group, Foundation Stock Services. After many years of work to get the number of dogs up, get titles in show and sport, as well as many other things, the GBGV moved to the Miscellaneous Class. After a couple years there, we now have enough dogs, just over 300 in the USA, titles, group members, and all the other things necessary to be recognized as a full AKC breed in the Hound Group. This year the AKC is educating and approving judges for our breed. They also have to update their computer systems.
Being a rare breed is something we like, and we hope our breed always remains fairly low in numbers, but it will be nice to finally be recognized. Next time I renew my dog license, I can register as a GBGV, not a miscellaneous breed. People will start to see us more at dog shows, and it will be good for the breed overall.
Right now, with around 300 GBGV’s in the USA, and three at my house, we have about 1% of the population which is kind of fun, but that will change as people discover our breed.
Since I’m pretty excited about the news, I wanted to share it with all of you. My blog was started to help promote the breed, and my sisters and I have gotten many titles for the breed. We also try to be out and about a lot to represent, and inform people about the GBGV breed. What do you think? Will you be looking for GBGV’s at dog shows in 2018?
Yes! Having PBGV’s I feel like we are cousins!
We are kind of cousins. It’s time we get to be shown too!
I am so excited for you. I will definitely be looking for youbat dog shoes. I just hope, because you are sooo beautiful and smart, the demand doesn’t get so great that people over breed.
The PBGV has been around for a long time and is not over bred. We are not the breed for everyone, and I think we will remain cute to look at but not the dog everyone wants to own. We can be real stubborn, and independent. Mom likes the challenge, but many want an obedient, people pleasing dog, not an independent thinking type.
That is GRAND news! Cannot wait to see my big cousins in the show ring. XOXO, Sparkle
We are very happy to finally be a “real” dog in the AKC starting next year.
YAY!!!! that is a super good news… and it is great that people can meet your bro’s and sistahs at shows now…. and maybe the next winner of westminster is a GBGV?
I don’t think judges like us because we are shaggy and they tend to always pick the dogs with neat and orderly furs, but it will be nice to be recognized. Some of Bailie and Madison’s siblings are show dogs.
here the judges LOVE you and your smaller cousins, they often come as a pack and the hound ring is always surrounded by fans.
Here in the USA, they seem to like the dogs with the fancy hairdos.
yes… at the end this dogs mostly win… maybe I should add a ribbon on my head with superglue to look like one of that pups?
Wow sounds like terrific news
Snorts,
Lily & Edward
We are pretty excited about it.
Thanks fantastic! Your breed will steal the show.
Everyone loves to see us, but judges seem to like more orderly dogs. We don’t care much about that, we just want to be a full breed finally.
That is really big news and how cool you have 1% at your place!
It’s a serious hound house here!
That is great news! I think it’s cool that you have 1% of the population in your own house! I think it would take some of the fun out of it if your breed became too popular (says the person with beagles, goldens, and Labs…..LOL).
I thought your breed was in dog shows, but it must have been a Crufts show I was watching!
We are in Crufts, and a GBGV won the hound group this year. The PBGV looks similar to a GBGV and many get that confused.
Awesome Emma!! Congratulations!!! We don’t think doodles will ever make it to the AKC!!
I don’t even think they are trying, are they? It will be fun to finally be recognized.
YAY!!! What pawesome news!!
It is awesome! So happy for us hounds.
This is very exciting news! We will definitely be watching for the GBGV next year at Westminster!
It will be more fun watching shows when our breed is actually there.
I’ll be looking for GBGVs when I’m out and about, but I don’t go to/watch the shows. I know you’ve been looking forward to this change in breed status, so congrats to ALL GBGVs and their pawrents!
We don’t do anything with shows either, but we are excited to finally be accepted as a breed in full.
So exciting! We love seeing all the fun breeds and hearing their traits and origins. We will be especially excited to see doggies like you! We already LOVE your breed.
Love and licks,
Cupcake
Thank you! We are excited to hear more about our breed starting next year.
So cool! Been great following the development of the breed. You guys are awesome ambassadors.
Thank you. We do our best to get our furry faces out there and create a lot of hubbub about our cute little selves!
That is awesome!! Didn’t hear this news yet so thanks for sharing.
I don’t think the AKC really makes much of it until next year, but they let our club know and we are excited.
Wahoovies!! It’s about time, right??
Smileys!
Dory, Jakey, Arty & Bilbo
The GBGV has come a long way since my paws landed in the USA. I’m not saying it is all because of me, but I wonder if I had a paw in it. Mom says it’s my ego coming through???
We are so happy for you!! Exciting news indeed…Congratulations!
Thank you. We are pretty happy to finally be fully recognized.
Yay! That’s pawsome news!
We’re pretty excited!
Sounds like some pretty big news! Congratulations!
Thank you. We are pretty excited to finally be fully recognized as a breed.
Congratulations! Those hounds had better watch out!
We’ll roll over the competition with our cuteness and silly antics!
I had no idea that the breed wasn’t AKC. I almost think that you got Madison so you could show her! Love Dolly
No, can’t ever see my mom going to dog shows. Not her thing. We got her because she is the breed standard and to do sports.
Congratulations. The only issue with rare breeds is the lack of genetic diversity. It can become an issue over time. 300 dogs is not many genetically speaking.
The majority of those 300 have been imported from Europe. Breeding here has really only gotten started the past few years. For example, Madison’s Mom is from MO, but her dad came from England and is a half brother of Emma’s. There still are not more than a couple litters a year born here.
That’s great news! I’m so happy to hear, you are such beautiful, talented dogs. There is absolutely nothing “Miscellaneous” about you & your siblings! I doubt that after next year’s dog show the numbers of GBGV’s in the US will remain low!
We don’t think we will ever be a real “in” breed. Too much work and such an independent breed, but we are happy to finally be recognized.
