We are getting started in AKC Scent Work here at my house. NACSW will always be our number one sport, but another venue for sniffing is a good thing for a house full of scent hounds! My sisters got to give it the first try last weekend. Mom registered Bailie in novice containers and buried hides, Madison in interiors.
While AKC Scent Work is similar to NACSW Nose Work, it is also very different. The concentration of odor is much higher, the trial venue regulations are much more lax, you can watch searches after your dog runs, and you need to pass an element three times to get a title in that element. The elements are containers, buried hides, interiors, and exteriors. Pass all four elements each three times and you earn a title for that level.
Bailie worked really hard. After two days of trials, she was mentally exhausted. Even though she was really going backwards from the level she usually sniffs at, only needing to find one hide in each search, things are different, and the buried hides are completely new. She qualified in all four container searches and earned her novice container title, SCN. Buried hides were a bit more tricky. Bailie missed her first search, but then qualified on the remaining three, earning her novice buried title, SBN.
Madison was rearing to go, but had to wait for several hours each day before it was her turn. She did work her furry behind off, but only managed to pass two of her four searches, so no title for her, but she did get two of the three legs towards a title.
Bailie has now managed to acquire more letters after her name. Just call her Ethos Irish Cream TD RATO SCN SBN CGC. Madison is going to try to earn more letters herself in agility the next two weekends. Follow My GBGV Life on Facebook and Instagram to get more timely sports updates. My sisters are always competing for something! I get tired just thinking about it!
What about me? Next month, Mom and I will be in an AKC Scent Work Trial and have a chance at all four elements, which means also a chance at a novice title. Mom and I are excited to see how I do! My sisters are going to try again the end of the month, so we will see if they are getting the hang of it or not. We are thankful for another sport we enjoy. Our dog sports are so much fun, and such a great way to bond even more with Mom!
We are joining Brianโs Home Blog in the Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!
congrats to you two… you are the bestest noses of da universe and next time Madison will keep up with her sister !!! the long waiting is something I don’t like … it gives me too much time for crazy ideas (said the mama). Good luck for your trial next week Emma!!!
We just take a nap if waiting is too much. I guess hounds aren’t as crazy as Weims!
WOW, that’s impressive! Congrats Bailie and Madison, ya done good! Thanks for joining the Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!
We are the noses of the family around here, born to sniff.
You girls are busy! Looks like Bailie was exhausted. Looking forward to more updates! Have a good day Emma!
Bailie really gets worn out from her sports. Madison and I get tired, but not as worn out. On to agility starting tomorrow for Miss Madison.
Wow! So much fun work. Canโt wait to hear hoe Emma does.
Mom has high hopes that I will get my novice title in two days. I think so too, but we have to practice buried hides a bit first so I know what they are all about.
My goodness you guys are busy. I thinks it’s awesome!! Congrats on everything.
Mom wonders why she decided to go wild and schedule 11 weekends of dog sports, but we all love it, and the variety of dogs and sports is nice too.
That is great that you now have another venue to work in, giving you many more chances to go to trials and get more of those wonderful titles and ribbons. Great job, Bailie, and we have no doubt Madison will get there too. Can’t wait to see how you do as well, Emma!
We were all born to sniff, so we should be doing well in scent work. It’s a lot of fun.
What a great weekend. Glad you were able to do an AKC event.
It is fun to do different forms of sniffing work.
You girls are so lucky that your mom takes you to all the events and gives you time for fun.
I think we are pretty lucky and happy pups.
That is awesome! I’d love to look into those trials….but not sure Cabo is ready for that yet!

Congratulations to you both.
Have a woof woof Thankful Thursday. My best to your mom. โฅ
Thank you.
We are so proud of y’all! It’s going to be a great scent year for the GBGV gang. โฅ
Hopefully a great rest of the fall with all the sports, but we will see how the noses fare!
Congrats! We’re doing our first AKC scent trial in December. Rye’s doing her first C-WAGS trial in a couple weeks, so it will be fun to see how she does with sniffing when she’s in a new place.
For us the scent work is great practice. We are in three more trials this year, so we will see how it goes. Have fun at your trial.
