I smell a ten year gotcha day here at my house. Yes, ten years ago today October 29, 2008, Mom came home from the Humane Society with two cats, cat bro Bert and kitty sis Sophie. She went expecting to bring home one kitten but returned with two adult cats. At the time, Bert was estimated to be about three years old, and Sophie one. Coincidentally, it is also National Cat Day today, so I guess it will be fine to spoil the two felines a bit.
Bert made himself at home immediately. He’s never been afraid of anything. Sophie was very timid and shy. She followed Mom around like a shadow the first couple months, but gradually became more comfortable at our house. The two new kitties have always gotten along just fine, and often hang out together. Sophie isn’t big on food, so Bert often steals from her. They have to be fed separately because of that.
From day one, Bert had no fear of us dogs, and actually seemed to feel that he was our equal. If Katie and I were doing something, he wanted to be along side of us.
Sophie has never been a fan of dogs, or people she doesn’t know. She enjoys spending most of her time by herself, sleeping, and looking pretty. I have to say, she is super pretty, but she sure is boring!
I was spayed in February 2011. Mom says I was a total baby about it. When I came home from the hospital, she put me by the fireplace with a blanket to keep me nice and warm. Of course, cat bro Bert came over and decided to sleep by me. I guess he does have a sweet and caring side.
Bailie joined our family on my birthday in 2013. She was actually the first speed bump Bert had ever experienced. Bert refused to give in to Bailie, but Bailie refused to let Bert get into whatever she was doing. Sometimes they really had to duke it out in order to find some peace. Sharing the space in front of the fireplace was often the battleground.
Once they had their little disagreement settled, the two were back to being buddies. I mean really, who lets a cat sleep with his butt on their head? Bert had never dealt with a puppy before. I think he was just trying to teach Bailie some respect for cats.
In 2016, Madison came along. She has never once put up with Bert, and the two of them are always going at it. They fight over beds, food, the door going outside, you name it. Neither of them will ever give in!
Life would be boring without cats. Actually, if Sophie disappeared, we might not even know it as we rarely see her, but Bert is our buddy. Despite angering us often, we really do love him. Happy Gotcha Day to Bert and Sophie today! You both make our lives more interesting, that is for sure!
Such a wonderful story! Happy Gotcha Day Bert and Sophie, y’all have the best home and best woofie sisters ever!
They might disagree about us dogs, but we do love them, and I think they love us girls too.
I think that’s wonderful. I always had a couple of kitties, and I really do miss them. Happy Gotcha day to them, aren’t they lucky to have landed at your place.
Mom has always had kitties too, but now she is thinking one might be good. With two she always ends up with food issues. One eats it all and gets fat, the other never gets enough.
everyone can live in peace and harmony- sometimes.
Occasional spats are healthy according to what Mom tells me.
Happy Gotcha Day Bert and Sophie!!!
They send thanks to you.
Happy Gotcha Day to Bert and Sophie… and how great that they came to your furever furmily on Cat Day! Have a super gotcha cat day ;O)
It wasn’t planned that way, but it happened.
Happy Gotcha Day. That’s always a very special day because it’s the day that your were chosen and given a furever home and became part of the family.
They were chose, but not by me. We’ve all learned to live well together.
Happy Gotcha Day to Bert & Sophie! What is it about cats, that you can’t bring home just one? We’re glad they – mostly – get a long with you dogs, Emma. Sam is kind of a loner like Sophie, even when we had other cats she was mostly off on her own.
Cats are usually loners, but now and then we get one like Bert that loves to be around other pets and people.
Happy Gotcha Day to these feline fursibs – and many more !
I think they will be around for quite a while still.
Happy Happy Gotcha Day Bert and Sophie!! I LOVED seeing the photos of them with the woofies!!! How cool that you adopted them on National Cat Day which I don’t think even existed 10 years ago (but don’t hold me to that lol). Happy Happy Gotcha Day!! xoxo
We never knew about National Cat Day, so it is pure coincidence.
We are so impressed at how well y’all get along with the cats. My cat and German Shepherd were best friends too. Bentley and Pierre would not allow a cat around here. Happy National Cat day Bert & Sophie β₯
We chase and hunt cats we don’t know, but our own cats or Gramma’s cat are family, so we would never hurt them.
Happy belated National Cat Day as well as Gotcha Day. Here’s to many more years of celebrating both.
Not surprising, they slept through most of their special day!
Awe, happy gotcha day Bert and Sophie!
