Welcome to a new photo challenge, #DogwoodWeek1! Bailie and I are not good at using a camera, this point and shoot, or our phone is about all we can handle. Emma pushed Mom to be a better photographer because she felt being so cute, we deserve to be photographed correctly. What is a hound to do? We entered Mom in the Dogwood Photo Challenge 2019.
Back in 2017, Mom entered a much smaller Pet Photography Challenge and really enjoyed it, but she wants to learn more. What is the Dogwood Photo Challenge? It is a 52 week challenge where tens of thousands of photographers participate from around the world. This year there are three challenge categories:
- Story Telling
- Compositional Eye
- Inspiration
The challenges for each of the 52 weeks are already listed on their website. It is not a competition, as you are challenging yourself to complete the assignment for each week. If you choose to post your photo, constructive criticism may be given. Last year we heard about it from Mary at Tales from the Backroad, but it had already started, and Mom wanted to start from the beginning. Mary is an amazing photographer of wildlife and many other things, as well as an inspiration to our mom to be a better photographer.
Enough of the details, lets see what the challenge for week one is, right?
The Dogwood Challenge Week 1
Story Telling Self Portrait:Β Take a picture that tells us who you are, without actually showing your face.
This one had Mom stumped right off the bat. How could she show what she is about in one photo. If you are a fan of our blog, you know we are all about story telling, but we usually have multiple photos. They, not sure who they are, but they always say a picture is worth a thousand words, right? Will Mom get a thousand words in her photo this week?
Are you ready? Here is the photo she decided to create.
Can you tell who my mom is through this photo? Does it tell a story about her?Β Do you want to know the thoughts behind the photo?
- We dogs are the most important things in her life, so we are large in the shot
- Mom loves being outdoors, making an outdoor shoot a must
- The soft color tones reflect her personality, she claims to not like to stand out
- Hopefully the layout also conveys the feeling of a relaxed person
- Running is a love of hers, thus the running shoes
- She lives on her laptop, can’t have a photo without it
- Obviously, photography is her love too, and her previous camera works for that
Did she capture herself with her photo for this week? Howl or growl in the comments.
That’s pretty darn cool and yep, that’s your Mom…ready to walk n’ roll!
LOL, good one, I like it.
Outstanding Madison! Tell Mom that we loved her photo. Best detail? the arm of the sweatshirt over the back of the bench — signified to us that she is totally relaxed. And being outside was inspired! Great photo. Good work team. Keep mom working on her photography skills! What a cool challenge. Have a great day. Your friend Lilly
There will be some really tough weeks coming up in the year, but I think it will be fun to see what she comes up with for every challenge. Have a great week!
that is well arranged and it needs not only one word to see what your mom likes to do and who you are! BRAVO!!!!!
Thank you. We think she did well, and most of all, she put us as the big part.
Well done- tells a great story!
We think Mom did pretty well.
Great photo of who you are, I love it. And thanks so much for the kind words!! Have a blast with the challenge. I’ve done it the last 3 years, but peetered out last year, which is so not like me. Too many other photography things going on I am learning and experimenting with. I truly did learn doing the challenge though, and that is what counts.
Mom is excited to try it all year. She wanted to start from week one, so she waited for the 2019 challenge. It will be fun I think. It might be something to do a year or two, but there are so many photography things out there, one needs to take in as much as possible.
Great photo it does express yourself, but it is missing one small thing…SNOW! YOU LOVE the cold! BRRRR! XOXO, Sparkle
Sadly, we are having a warm, almost snowless winter. There is a little patch under the back left side of the bench, but that was the best Mom could do.
COOL!
It’s a fun idea to get the creative juices flowing.
This photo definitely captures your mom – or at least what I know about your mom. We have thought about participating in a photo challenge, but somehow always miss the start of them. Maybe next year!
This one basically started now. Week 2 posts won’t go up until next Sunday, so you could do weeks 1 and 2 both and be all caught up.
I think your mom did a great job without showing her face. Very well done.
Have a woof woof day and week. My best to your mom. β₯
Thank you. We like it.
great photo, but i would not call you her dogs, you are her kids, babies, the loves of her life. where are your faces?
I’m sure we will be in challenges on and off the next 51 weeks. We get plenty of exposure. She calls us her girls, and her babies, but the shirt explains it to our liking as well. Actually, we are hounds, but dogs will do.
That photo most certainly tells what she wants it to!
Thank you. We think it is a good one.
I would recognize you from these items! A dog mom photographer blogger
Yep, that is our mom! Skipper should do this challenge. He’s so good at photography!
I think you did a great job on your first week task!
Thank you. We hope she can keep up the good work with great ideas every week!
We think your Mama did a great job describing herself! We think entering our own Mama in this challenge might be just the ticket to get her more excited about her photography this year!
xoxo,
Rosy, Jakey & Arty
It’s not too late! You can post week one photo all this week, and work on week two. This will be a fun challenge year.
Excellent job!!!anyone who knows you would recognize you!!!
Thank you. We think it is a pretty good summary photo.
You did great for your first challenge, love it! Tells who you are!!!
We think so too. All her very favorite stuff.
Love to watch your photos. I use to take all kinds of these photos with nature, Lexie Mica they were such great subjects. But no one to fill 52 weeks now so I will enjoy everyone else. Have fun:)
Thank you. Mom does a pretty good job, but photography always has room to learn and improve.
Enjoy this challenge. It should definitely hone your mum’s excellent skills.
Thank you. We are looking forward to the next 51 weeks.
So cool! Your momma did a good job!
Thank you.
I hate taking pictures. But love looking at other people’s pictures. I look forward to see your mom meet the challenge. I might even learn something myself.
My mom loves taking photos, always has. She loves to write too, but she hates reading. If she reads a book a year that is a lot. Short stories or articles are all she enjoys reading. Funny how things are.
