It’s springtime in Minnesota, which means a melting mess of snow, water, ice, dirt, trash and brown nature. Around here it won’t start looking better for a couple weeks, and that is if we don’t get any more snow.
Mom and I stopped by a park we like to visit, on the way to my barn hunt practice the other day. She dreads going for walks this time of year because of all the mess, but we do still go. The snow behind me is really dirty, and you can see my wet paw tracks on the asphalt.
One way we like to walk is blocked because of flooding. Mom lived next to this park a long time ago, and has come here for years, but she has never seen the path to the bridge flooded. We would have to go the other way, and then turn around since a circle around the lake isn’t possible. The water is a foot or so deep in places. I noticed the squirrels were out celebrating spring, but they did not come to play with me.
The fishing pier is open, but no one is fishing, not even ice fishing. When I stopped for the photo, there was a bit of wind, so my ears had some lift.
As we headed out to go the other way around the lake, the path was all mushy snow and ice covered. This stuff doesn’t matter much to me. I’m short and long, with a perfect center of gravity. I rarely fall, and if I ever do, the way down is short. My mom is much more worried about falling herself.
I did some off road inspection work. My nose got a big workout with all the fresh smells in the melting snow. It’s good physical exercise too because I sink in, and need lots of energy to keep going.
Further down the path the sun was shining into the woods. See how the snow is gone, and has been replaced by mud and ice. Real nice, not, but that is typical springtime in Minnesota!
When we were just about back to our car, I hopped up on a bench so Mom could get a good look at my dirty undercarriage. She was not impressed, but we had a towel along, knowing we would need one. That’s the dirt on springtime in Minnesota. Hopefully things will dry out soon, and we can get back to good clean fun!
Our friends at Living Laughing and Barking in Our Backyard are hosting a nature Friday blog hop. We are joining up to show everyone how disgusting spring is here in Minnesota.
That does look pretty messy but you probably had lots more fun than your Mom!
I really had fun. Our noses are glued to the ground right now with all the fresh smells.
What Brian said. I was thinking the same thing. Moms have to clean up the mess.
I’ve never lived in snow country so I’ve not seen the spring mess. I’ll pass.
Have a fabulous day and weekend. My best to your mom. β₯
It’s usually a couple weeks of real ugly, but then it will start to warm up and green up too.
Goodness, what a wet mess. Iβve heard most of the country is going through the same thing.
Lots of flooding, extreme flooding, but this was just the normal mess with a small amount of flooding.
yep. its been raining here so we are a mess! mom loves spring except for the rain! Last night she got home really late but she knew we wouldnβt sleep well if we didnβt get a walk in so even in the torrential rain we were all three out there! My brother looked like a really wet rat!!!! He kept looking up at mom and kind of smiling. We think he likes being wild and crazy!! Great post Madison. Keep enjoying the wet!!! your friend Lilly
You better watch out for that little brother, he may have a true wild pants/naughty side like my sister Bailie. It is fun, but I’m glad I’m the more mature one in the family. It is nice not to be in trouble all the time. Have a fun weekend.
we count the days till we can walk around without looking wet and messy… but it is great to see the signs of spring even when we have them in the car and in the house LOL
It’s always a terrible mess around here for a couple weeks.
Oh my, your furs did get wet and dirty! My mom says the flooding is so bad this year, and there is so much ore snow to melt. YIKES! Your mom has reason to be concerned when she walks on that sh – mean stuff! Have a happy and productive weekend! XOXO, Sparkle
We are always a mess this time of year! Looking forward to a quiet weekend for a change. Happy Friday.
Oh my word thank goodness your snow is melting. Minnesota had lots of snow this year. I hope the sun shines on your furs and warms you nose this weekend
Hugs Cecilia
We are sad to see all the nice snow melting away. It is so much fun, but it happens every year. Now to survive the mess until things dry out and turn green.
That looks like a super duper walk in the disappearing snow. But I sympathise with your Mom on the centre of gravity business. I have, for a fox terrier, long legs and a short back and Gail says I topple over much more readily than my longer but lower predecessor Hamish the Westie. But then those low undercarriages to soak up the mud more readily, so it’s swings and roundabouts I guess!
Toodle pip!
Bertie.
My nickname from Mom is swiffer, since I pretty much mop up the ground I walk on!
We get so excited about spring and warmer weather coming, that we completely forget what a messy disaster it is!! We are getting snow today, but there’s still plenty of mud underneath it!
We are not too thrilled about spring, never are. Mom can’t ever decide what to wear, it is messy, just not a good time until late spring around here.
Walkies are so important and that’s why we have our moms to clean up after us!
We are lucky to have good moms to care for us all the time.
Itβs not the seasons, itβs the in betweens as you move from season to season that seems to bring the worst mess.
Spring is the worst of all. Always a huge mess.
Hopefully, the sun will come out to visit and help dry stuff up for you. Mom keeps a towel by the back door when it is raining but we hate going out when it’s wet so we try to hold our business as long as possible.
We don’t mind rain, puddles or being wet, but we need lots of towels with this weather! The sun is out, but it is melting the snow, creating more water. In a few weeks things should be dried up unless we get more snow, which is very possible.
It might be messy, but Spring looks like a great time of year to explore in Minnesota!

We are still fans of winter because it is pretty, and there are no ticks trying to get us all the time. Late spring is pretty, but then summer comes and it is too warm to be much fun. It is still nice to have four seasons, but our fav will always be winter.
We call springtime “mud season” here. Ugh. I love the “ear lift” in the breeze. You’re a beauty, Madison!
It is such a mess. I keep getting dipped into the laundry tub when I come it. Not real fun.
March 20 is the beginning of mud season. Period. Here’s to drier days soon.
It’s a mess. Lots of time in the laundry tub for me.
I hate melts!!! middy messes. the dogs don’t seem to mind
We don’t mind being dirty, but Mom does not like dirty dogs in the house. Such a mess.
Did you need a bath after your walk? Hope things thaw out complete for you and you get lots of warmth.
I was going to barn hunt practice, so Mom toweled me off, and I dried in the car and at practice, so no bath needed.
The joys of spring.
