The surgery that wasn’t makes me happy this week. You see, I had my third heat cycle in May, but this one was different. The hormones did weird things to me that we didn’t like. Mom was planning to get me spayed in the winter, but because of all the stuff that went on, she decided yesterday would be the day. We were up and out to the vet at 7 AM.
Our vet left a year or so ago, but we found Dr Lammi at the same clinic and we really like her. She is the one who would be doing my surgery. Mom was, as always, a nervous wreck, and I didn’t want to be at the vet. If you can imagine, they had me get naked (remove collar and leash) and then they put a hospital leash on me. The people are always nice, and the lady found a pink one just for me.
Mom left. She said she would be back around 4 PM to pick me up. I really didn’t know what was going to happen. She had leaky eyes, and I was nervous. The lady said they would call Mom if there were problems, otherwise, after I was out of surgery.
The cellphone rang not even three hours after Mom left me. She says she was scared to answer because it was too soon for the vet to call. It was my doctor calling to tell her they had me under anesthesia, shaved my belly, and discovered a skin infection right in the area the incision would be in. The doc said it would be risky to do surgery because the incision would easily become infected, so they decided to wake me up, fix the infection with pills, and do my surgery another time.
By early afternoon, I was good to go home, so Mom picked me up. I was still groggy, and even whined a bit on the drive home. She put me upstairs in the guestroom with the curtains closed and lights off so I could sleep.
Before she left me to sleep off my anesthesia, she had to look at my belly. How could she have missed a skin infection. The vet said had she not shaved my belly, she would never have seen it. Mom found that hard to believe. Look at the dots there on my belly – they are so ugly, but not real easy to see under my furs if you aren’t looking for them. Such a mess! Who ever went in for surgery that wasn’t?
This year is especially bad for skin issues according to the vet. All the rain and odd weather has been doing strange things. It’s great my infection isn’t as nasty looking as Bailie’s was!
I’m super thankful my vet is really good at her job and didn’t risk my life just to do a surgery. Thankfully, my mom has common sense too and agreed with our vet. An infection would have been a really bad thing after an operation, and I have a full schedule of trials in August that I wouldn’t want to miss. I spent the rest of Thursday curled up in a ball on the floor sleeping, but today, I’m back to being Madison! We’ll have to reschedule my surgery at some point between my sports weekends, which isn’t easy.
I’m joining Brian’s Home Blog in the Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!
It’s a good thing that your vet didn’t just do the surgery. I have known some vets that would have done it just for the money. I hope that rash clears up soon.
We love our clinic and the vets that work there. Before we found this place, Mom went through a lot of vets she would not trust.
Yes, i’ve known of people and pets who had to have surgery rescheduled because of something that happened that was unforeseen. It’s always a bother to find a time to reschedule, i hope your mom and vet come to an agreement that works well for everyone’s schedule.
I sure got a lot of sleep yesterday because of it. Mom has it rescheduled when I have a break in my sports.
Oh I am so glad they found that infection. What a good vet to not do the surgery. Some vets would have done it anyway. Hope it
heals up quickly so you can have the surgery.
Mom was frustrated they couldn’t do my surgery, but is thankful the vet cares about her patients and is not reckless.
Good bet! Katie has the same skin rash. The vet said it is because you ate
so low to the ground you are more at risk. Take it easy today. It only takes a few days to get rid of.
I have pills to take for ten days. I’m sure it will go away, then hopefully stay away too!
You really have a good Vet to catch that and stop so that you can be okay, that really is something to be thankful for. Thanks for joining the Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!
We are super thankful for her. She is super smart, and very caring.
I’m glad you have – like we do – an excellent vet who cares about and for her patients! Some vets care only about the money, like some huDocs. Long Live Good People!
One reason we love the clinic so much is that they really do care about the pets, not the money. Mom has had the bad human docs as well as vets in the past.
Oh my dog! I am thankful your doctor caught the infection when she did, and I am so sorry you had to go through all that trauma. But wait! Puffin (now 18 weeks and now 9 pounds) went in yesterday to be spayed. Her procedure went well and she was home in 4 hours. She did not want to do anything all day but sleep, be held, and sometimes whimper from the pain. Today is a new day and MY Puffin is back to her normal self except she has a funny blow up pillow around her neck. I will be gentle with her. XOXO, Sparkle
The two weeks of resting will be hard for her being so young. Glad she is alright.
You have a great vet (and mom!!). Glad you are back to your Madison self!
I just had to sleep off the anesthesia, then I was my old self.
I was even a nervous wreck while reading… and I can only imagine how your mama felt the moment the phone rang at the wrong time… I’m so glad your vet discovered the infection and I hope that the treatment helps to get the all clear before the next appointment..
I can’t go in for a while because my calendar is full of sports, but it will be cleared up before I go back.
We hear you on those nasty skin problems – it has been annoying for a lot of us with long hair!
This year is really weird, but we are healing up around here.
Such good news. Mom is happy and so are you. A huge thankful.
Have a woof woof Thankful Thursday. My best to your mom. ♥
A good vet or doctor is so important.
Thank goodness that you have a SuperSmart vet, Madison!
I know. We are really lucky to have a good vet.
You have a good vet – glad they stopped the surgery, we want you healthy and happy sweet girl!
We are thankful for that for sure.
We are very happy that they were able to stop the infection from spreading before they did the surgery. It’s very important to have such a great doctor. Thanks for the share. Have a wonderful day.
It is good to have a vet we can trust. She is really good.
thank goodness that was caught !!!! Hmmm if Mom has been taking you to the woods to hike maybe she shouldn’t? Not sure that she is though, I know sometimes she does. Feel Better!
We haven’t done anything out of the ordinary around here, but the wacky weather has been causing lots of problems for people and pets with skin irritations and infections.
I’m so thankful your vet saw the infection. Bentley was at the vet for ear surgery and one of his levels (not sure which now) was off kilter. It was slight but they didn’t want to take any chances. He never had the surgery because we started using the Purple Stuff and he has not had another ear infection. Thanks so much!!
We figure the universe has a reason for everything that happens. So glad Bentley never had ear surgery. Sometimes solutions are so simple, but you have to come across them.
We are also thankful for you that you have a great vet! We’re sure your Mom will be able to find another time that will work for your surgery. We hope you are done with skin infections too. I can totally understand how they could be missed on any dog with thick fur like yours.
This summer has been very weird. Normally we don’t have skin issues, but the weather has done strange things to plants and bugs which is probably what is irritating our skin.
so glad the vet found it before she started cutting. were you getting the full job or just getting your tubes tied/ovaries removed? i had the laser surgery done on my girls. i hope you had a nice nap and Mom treated you to lots of goodies. i know those little red marks are nasty, surprised they did not make you itch. i bet they were tiny bug bites. my oldest used to get them when she was out in the grass in the summertime. she had become allergic to grass.
Just like with Bailie’s infection which is not the same kind as mine, neither of us had any itching or anything to tell Mom something is up.
What a very observant Vet!! Arty had a bad time with his yeast/skin issues this year too!
xoxo,
Rosy, Jakey & Arty
We are pretty sure it is a one time deal with all the strange things going on outdoors this super wet year. At least it has never bothered me. Poor Arty really suffers with his skin allergies.
Oh no! We hope the infection heals quickly and spaying can occur shortly thereafter. Sending oodles of poodles of healing thoughts.
It won’t be until the end of summer as I have a lot of events planned in August. I get into all the trials, and Bailie seems to land on the waitlists, so I’ll be too busy for surgery until then. Mom says my belly already looks better.
Well darn, sorry you had to be woke back up. It will heal in no time then you can loose your lady parts, no need to have them.
That is something that was never ever on Mom’s radar. I’m glad the vet was careful, though. I’ll have the surgery in another month or so when I have time in my sports schedule.
Oh no! Sorry about your skin infection. I hope you feel better soon!
It was a bummer since everything was planned, but it is better to be safe and wait for the surgery.
WOW!! great mom, great vet! great day in the morning!!! This summer has been awful for us furred folks. Hope you can sleep and rest and get healed. The Boys
Our weather has only been hot recently, thankfully.
Your mom’s smart and I am glad your doc had you take meds first for the infection and will have to reschedule your surgery. I hope you’ll get well soon.
We have a real good vet, and my skin healed up real fast. Now to reschedule.
