Today we are sharing some shots of Olivia’s first nose work trial in Brainerd earlier this month. The photos are from the fabulous Caprise Adams, and the video is from Wyatt Lees. We did purchase these for our own personal use. It’s always fun to be able to get photos from our trials, but most of the time, there is no photographer. Hope you enjoy watching Olivia in action.
Olivia started her day with the exterior search. There is one hide, and the odor is birch. Searches are times, and there is a time limit. The time starts with the dog’s nose crosses the start line. Mom is good about always stopping prior to the start line to get us focused on the task we have to accomplish.
As almost always is the case, Olivia started off heading for the out of bounds area. She is sniffing, but we are not sure what she is sniffing.
Mom called her back and she got to work heading towards the blue bench in the middle of the search area.
Olivia loves to get her nose right on the odor, and sometimes she will also paw at it or try to bite it. She is funny as she can twist her body like a pretzel to get at the odor.
Once she determines it is the spot, she lets Mom know and then come the treats.
The second search of the day was interiors. Mom and Olivia headed right to that search from their exterior search. Once again, there was one birch hide, and a three minute time limit. We chose this video to show you as it is probably the best search of Olivia’s day. She found the hide in twenty nine seconds which gave her the seventh fastest time out of thirty dogs. Note how she twists herself up again to get her nose right on the hide.
Containers is boring to watch at the novice level as it is just two rows of boxes, and it is also where Team Orange messed up, so we will skip that for this trial.
Vehicles was the final search of the day. This search was a near disaster as Olivia found the hide fairly quickly, but because of food fragments on the ground, she never bothered to tell Mom the hide was there. They walked around for over two minutes before Olivia finally told Mom where the hide was.
We have all learned from Mom not to go back to a hide we already found, but sometimes that is a problem because Olivia felt like she had already found the one and only hide! She just kept searching.
Both of them were getting frustrated. Mom felt like they hadn’t found the hide, and Olivia was wondering why Mom was making her search after she had already found the hide.
Yes, it is true, the hide is on the license plate! Mom called “alert”, and Olivia waited patiently for the “yes”.
And it was finally treat time! They were super happy to at least end on a good note. Olivia is young, and three out of four isn’t bad. Now they have to find another trial to enter so they can give it another try.

Such wonderful photos again!
We love Caprise because she does a fantastic job!
Bravo!!! that was great to watch the video!!! your look and your body language as you found it!!! spectacular!!!!
Thank you. I’m pretty good about being exact and then telling my mom.
We think she did dog- gone good for her first competition. Chablis says team work means Mom’s have to be extra cued in to the hints – like there was treat food on the ground – so another dog had found the hide right there. But we dogs know you humans aren’t as smart as us, so we try to be patient with you and are more than willing to give you more chances as long as you keep letting us try.

In NACSW nose work, the dog has to be at the actual hide in order for the human to call it. I was distracted, but then I remembered and came right back.
That was fun and we enjoyed those photos and that video, we could sure see that nose working!!!
Mom says I’m a real nosy dog!
Awww Olivia…well done. Wow… the video was such fun. You nose KNOWS!!
Hugs Cecilia
I do enjoy my job of finding hides and I’m pretty good for my age too.
oh my goodness mom and I are so impressed watching and reading about Olivia. What an interesting sport. Mom was really impressed with how in tune your mom has to be — i was very impressed with Olivia! Awesome post. So interesting! your friend Lilly
One thing Mom loves about all our sports is it really increases the bond we have with our human. We have to learn to communicate to the human, and the human needs to learn to read our behavior. Every sport is a bit different and we really do mainly dog driven sports. Agility is human driven and another skill set.
Awesome post! Mom loved seeing how in tune you two have to be! It’s such an amazing exercise and must be so draining mentally!! Olivia is awesome to watch!!! We love this post, your friend Lilly
We are always wiped out after a round of nose work. It is mentally draining. At trials Mom is “fried” at the end of the day from her mental challenges of reading us. It is so much fun, though! Glad you enjoyed it.
Oh, Olivia, you are so smart! what a wonderful future awaits you so keep on searching, sniffing, and maybe leave the treats on the ground alone. π XOXO, Sparkle
Humans get faults for dropping food, but at the beginning level it still happens. I will learn to work through it. At least I still found the hide pretty fast.
Well done!
Thank you.
Wow, what wonderful photos and video, I never get tired of seeing you pups at work.
Thank you. I, especially, love to work with my mom.
I see a great future for Olivia. She’s got a great nose and she’s ever so smart. I enjoy your hunts.
Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week. Scritches to the pups. β₯
Thanks for joining me on my hunt recap.
Olivia is such a good dog! And adorable too!
Thank you. Right now I work really hard and Mom hope that keeps up. I have been trained differently than my sisters, so she high hopes for me and our team.
Great job, Olivia! We love watching your ears drag on the ground, which probably helps you find scents a lot. You are so cute!
LOL! Yes, they make a funnel for the odor to hit right into my nose. I do a lot of ground sniffing even when I’m looking for something up higher.
Appaws Olivia! Well done and thank you for showing us your skillsπPawkisses for a Happy Monday to all of youπΎπ½π
Glad you enjoyed my searches.
Great job, Olivia (and mom)! I don’t have any experience with nosework, but Remy has started doing some hunting dog training where he searches for birds that have been planted in a field. There is a trainer in our town who offers nosework classes so perhaps I will give it a try sometime. I’m sure he’d love it.
It’s really no different than finding birds, just like we also do barn hunt with rats. It’s the same process, just a different odor. I bet he would love it.
Live and learn and what are food crumbs doing out there! Is that fair? Is it supposed to be there to distract? Anyway, it sounds like a mostly winner of a day.
Food crumbs are not supposed to be there, but I did work through them and remembered to go back and tell Mom the hide is on that stool.
Go Olivia, 3 out of 4 is pretty darn good!
It was a bummer we failed on my best element, but both of us messed it up. Nevertheless, we are happy, we had fun, and we learned more about our team.
I’d say 3 out of 4 is definitely not bad at all! Olivia seems very thorough, glad you were able to end on a high note too. Great photos and video, it’s so great you can get those sometimes.
We really love it when we can get our photos and videos. It helps for training, and it is a good memory.
Those photos and videos are excellent. She looks as if she is having g a blast!
I love to do my sports. I drag Mom to start lines, scream when it isn’t my turn. Loads of fun.
