I earned my AKC Scent Work Excellent Interior search element title February 21st. In the next trial I will be in Masters Interiors. Excellent Interiors is where things start to get difficult. In Novice there is one hide in one room. Advanced has two hides in one room. In Excellent Interiors, there are two rooms to search with a total of three hides. In my searches I could be on or off leash. Mom chose off leash on Saturday. The orange soccer dots in the second room are a boundary marker. I can go past them, but there are no hides in that area.
The trick in an Excellent Interior search is to find one or two hides in the first room. If you are correct in the first room, you can move on to the second room. If you fail the first room, you are done. On the plus side, if you find one hide in the first room and you are correct, you know there are two in the second room. If you correctly find two hides in the first room, then you know you only need to find one in the second room.
I earned my first Q back in October, so this video is my second Q in Exterior Excellent and I placed fourth in this search. Mom is a bit slow to call my finds because she wants to be certain I am done working. Her favorite part of my Excellent Q on Saturday is when I simply leave the room because I know I am done. Sometimes a girl has to take matters into her own paws!
We are super thankful videos were offered at this trial as they usually are not offered at Scent Work trials. It is a fun learning tool and nice keepsake from our trial.

Very interesting. How do you know what you are searching for? Mom used to play a scent/memory game with Angel Lexi. She let Lexi watch her hide treats all over the house, and Lexi wasn’t allowed to get them until Mom said FREE! Then she would run to each of the hiding places and gobble them up without stopping. We don’t know if it was by memory or scent, but we think maybe memory, so that isn’t really scent work…. XOX Xena and Lucy
It is searching for essential oil on Q-tips in a tiny container that can also be inaccessible, like in a drawer. Novice is birch, Advanced is birch and/or anise, Excellent is birch/anise/clove, and Masters is birch/anise/clove/cypress. With multiple odors they can be alone or combined in any combination. They are all molecularly similar, so it is pretty easy to find them. We can smell the odor before we even get to the search area most of the time. With more than one hide, it creates more of an odor puzzle, but we train to figure it all out.

Mom sometimes doesn’t know when to quit, so if I leave, she knows I’m really done! Odor travels depending on location, temperature and airflow. For some reason my nose wasn’t catching that second hide, but eventually I got it. I rarely hear a 30 second warning, and it turns out the timer was early giving it too. All ended well, and Mom knows I will find it if it is there.

Mom is very proud of me. I’m her test dog as she started me on all my sports at 9 weeks old and trained me all on her own for almost a year. It has worked well for me and we are a pretty good team.
