The GBGV personality is not like that of a regular dog. Hounds are bred to work on their own, and they don’t really need a human to survive. Dogs like shepherds, labs, and others are bred to work along side humans and they feel they need the human in their lives. We hounds do love our humans but most of the time just for convenient things like food and treats. Don’t get me wrong, we are super cuddlers and snugglers but if something more interesting is happening, we are off to check it out.
For those of you who don’t know or live with a GBGV we thought we would explain ourselves a little bit today.
We tend to place our own desires ahead of those of our human. Recall is a great example. If nothing better is going on, we come in a second, but if we are busy, forget it. Call all day, our ears are deaf to your calls. Regular dogs come when called to please their human, it is what they do. For a hound like a GBGV, the human has to convince us that obeying a command has something in it for us, not the satisfaction of the human. This is why we are almost always on leash unless an area is fenced. We can’t be trusted.
Don’t take this the wrong way. We have been bred to think this way. It doesn’t make us stupid or stubborn. We are very smart! With no training we can go out hunting and tracking but it may just not be what the human had in mind. Mom enjoys the challenge we bring with our sports. It isn’t always easy to work with us, but if we learn the value of success, then we tend to be more willing to do the sport the way the human would like. It makes accomplishing sports goals challenging, but very satisfying too.
We came across this video the other day which does a pretty good job of describing the GBGV personality. The video used photos and videos of many GBGV’s, unfortunately, they used Bailie and Emma without our permission. Still, rather than getting our furry panties in a knot over it, we are taking it as a compliment. You can see Emma in fact #4 at about 3:17 and Bailie in fact #5 around 3:57.
If you are not familiar with our breed, we do hope this gives you a bit more insight into what makes us tick.
I liked listening to your facts about me! I do come pretty much when my mom calls me
Otherwise I am guilty of pretty much everything. Good luck this weekend
XOXO Sparkle
We have a great recall until something comes up, then forget it!
that was interesting!!! if we are busy our ears are occupied too, so we can not listen ;O) during the last time we see more and more of your small cousins here, they hunt as a pack and they really do their job without getting instructions or commands… it is impressing to see how ther packs work, but on the other hand that “venerie” is a cruelty thing…
We have our own little pack. In the US, the PBGV’s do pack hunting as a sport but they don’t allow GBGV’s to hunt with them.
Yes! We PBGVs have that same personality.
We think we are pretty much alike. A slightly different shape but otherwise very similar.
We loved the video and we think you girls are just too cute!
Thank you. I can’t believe they didn’t mention cuteness in the video!
Thanks for sharing the video ~ we now know more about our friends here at GBGV life …
Since we are still pretty rare, most people don’t know much about us. We like to spread the word.
in some ways they are similar to Shelties too……Shelties don’t inherently please their humans! The video was interesting!
Mom is rather independent herself, so she understands us well and isn’t too mad when we don’t listen.
I didn’t know this at all. Thank you for schooling us on these wonderful pups.
Have a woof woof day and weekend. My best to your mom. β₯
Most people don’t know much about our breed, which is one reason Emma started the blog back in 2011. We are awesome pets, but challenging as well.
Y’all are always special, we knew that and we enjoyed the video too!
Thank you. We enjoy being special.
So many of your traits are shared with beagles, and we miss that hound dog attitude! At least they gave you credit in the video!
Hounds require different training that other dog types, but the average person doesn’t understand it and that makes it tough. Mom says she has to be creative to deal with us properly.
We certainly learned a lot about your breed. We had wondered why you are always on leash in your pictures, and now we know! What is your motivation during training? Treats? Attention? Play? Something else? Mine is treats. Mommy says I lose my mind sometime when I know her pockets are full of my favorite treats, and she can’t get any training done with me! XOX Xena
For Olivia it is all about the food, she loves her treats. Bailie likes the treats a lot too. Me, as a puppy I didn’t like food or treats, so training was hard. I really enjoy the hunt and I love getting snuggles and attention for people. That is the best reward for me! One reason I do much better in barn hunt than my sisters is that you can give rewards in the ring. They lose interest after a couple rats, but I just love hunting and don’t really care if I get a treat or not.
Hey did credit you, but you are right, they should have asked. We always ask first before we use things (well, except for occasionally sofas or low-lying human food ) but is is always great to see us GBGVs in action. Thank you for sharing this video. I REALLY live the first photo of Bailie – she looks so inquisitive!
They didn’t credit Emma’s photo, but we think the video is good, so we don’t mind but you are not supposed to use photos without permission.
What an informative video, we also learned a lot about you gals!
It is a fun video to watch. We have watched it a few times.
You and the video explained a lot. You are a fabulous breed!
Thank you. We are hounds but special hounds at that.
It was interesting to learn more about your breed! We can’t wait to hear about your weekend! We hope that you are all doing well at your scent events!
We had an awesome weekend and are now home dog tired, LOL!
Love this post. So fun to see the differences between the grande and petite
We saw several petites again at the trial on Sunday. We are very similar, but even tiny Madison does have a different body and head shape along with straighter legs, and a longer tail and ears. It’s fun to see the PBGV’s anyway.
Great reminder that every breed is different and so is every dog! Remy, being a weim, loves to run around sniffing everything. He does like to keep his people in sight but has a hard time leaving smells alone. For example, in agility, he likes to run around the arena looking for bird poop or horse poop. So I have to work to keep his focus by moving quickly, talking to him and carrying the best treats (which are never better than horse poop apparently).
Horse poop is hard to top! Yes, every breed has their things that make them special. We are just our own hounds which can make things difficult for humans sometimes.
