The Grand Rounds Scenic Byway is all around the Twin Cities. There are roughly fifty one miles of walking/biking trails in the system around the Twin Cities. The Grand Rounds is one of the countryβs longest continuous systems of public urban parkways for more than a century. Grand Rounds encompasses natural features, including lakes, creeks, woodlands, riverbanks, and wetlands, as well as constructed features, like canals, lagoons, greenways and parks, playgrounds, parkways, trails, golf courses, athletic fields, picnic grounds, gardens, and bridges.
Mom and I took a short hike at a section of the byway across the Mississippi River from Boom Island. It is a popular park in Northeast Minneapolis. Boom Island has a small lighthouse which you can see behind me to the left.
It was a beautiful weather day, but in the sun, it was on the warm side. Lucky for us, this section of the trails is in a heavily wooded area. Shade is good for a girl wearing a fur coat in the summer.
From our parking spot to the “real” trails, the trail is asphalt. Once again, the shade keeps it from being too hot on a summer day.
We found a small inlet from the river with two bridges. One bridge is really up high. We started by crossing over that one. I didn’t want to look at the camera, so Mom put it down for a second to see what was wrong. Guess what? I am afraid of heights! My legs were quivering as I was sitting on the bridge. Mom hurried to grab a shot of me and I stuck out my tongue to show her my feelings on the whole high bridge thing.
Hiking around on the dirt trails is nicer than on asphalt. There are a lot of ups and downs too but there are enough rocks and tree roots to keep the trails from being slippery. Behind me is the lower bridge we could see when we were up high.
I’m fine on the lower bridge, no fears there at all. Once we crossed it, we had to go up a little hill and we were on the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway once again. I think we will do some more hiking around on these trails when we are in the city sometimes. We see the signs around town and they seem to be some fun trails with pretty places to explore.

Sounds like a wonderful place. mountain climbing is n your bucket list I would cross it off
I wouldn’t mind it if I wasn’t on the edge.
I’m not fond of heights either, Ballie, but those trails look enticing. Your mom got some great shots of you and the trails.

I love hiking around, just not the heights.
I just love all of the glorious places you share with us! Makes me want to move to Minnesota!!
There are endless parks and trails around here. We have many more to try out.
I would have loved to come along with you and I’m not a fan of heights either. You do the most fun things. Your mom rocks.
Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week. Scritches all around and my best to your mom. β₯
She loves walking/hiking outdoors and so do we, so it is a good match.
That looks like a very beautiful area to hike ! (not too quick !)
No, we are still being very careful.
it’s a super place… and not crowded with peeps and pets ;O)
It was too busy for us really, but we are used to finding places where there is no one else at all.
What lovely trail you have! It’s such a pretty area, and nice to hear and see good thing about your beautiful city! XOXO, Sparkle
Our cities have been in tons of bad stuff lately. We are careful where we go too, but this place was fine.
What a beautiful place for a hike, Bailie, and that lake is so pretty and looks so refreshing!
It’s the Mississippi River. Mom would not let me go in the river, though.
Looks like a fun hike Bailie! Our Angel brother Bilbo was also afraid of high places, so we totally understand!

Mom has never noticed it before, but I am worried when I am up high.
What wonderful walks! Cinnamon too does not like heights! Having great places to go and walk, with shade is terrific! Thanks for sharing with us! Cinnamon now wants Mom to take her on our River Walk!
Even Mom loves the the shady walks on hot days. It helps make it bearable.
I’m so happy to hear you took mom on a trek.
YAY
Hugs Cecilia
Yes, we are taking her out more and more. She doesn’t like to be stationary.
That really does look like nice place to hang out for a while!
It was a nice little city walk.
You have such lovely places to walk!
There are parks and trails everywhere. Just when we think we don’t know where to go, we hear about even more places. Exploring is so much fun.
What a neat area! High places make me a bit nervous, too, but i do enjoy the view enough to make myself go.
Mom isn’t a fan of heights either but this bridge didn’t bother her, just me.
I don’t much like high bridges either, so I’d be rushing over that one and taking the photos on the other side! π
I think I should be walking with you!
