A little black trash can rained on our parade on Sunday. I earned another title, but not the entire title we planned on. Saturday after Madison’s trial we drove to Illinois for my NW3 on Sunday. Mom and I had a fantastic day until the hiccup in the last search. We are still super proud of our work together, all the improvements we’ve made, and are now trying to figure out how we went wrong with a simple trash can.
The three of us were exhausted when we finally got into our hotel room on Saturday night. A day of trialing for Mom and Madison plus a five hour drive wears us girls out. We were happy to settle into bed and get a good night’s sleep before my trial. The mural over the bed made Mom and Madison happy as they have been to that spot in Chicago in person.
All of us slept pretty well and were ready to hit the road for the hour drive to my trial. When we are getting close, I like to stand and put my head up front so I can see exactly where we are going. Mom and I were planning on earning my NW3 Elite Title if all went well but it was not to be. Still we are thankful for the great day of searching together and another NW3 Title.
Our whole day, we were so connected and worked as a real team. I was fast at finding the hides and Mom left her comfort zone to call them and call finish much faster than ever before. Going into our last search we felt like we were going to achieve our goal. Well, I flew into the final search area and went right to a small, black, trash can, sniffed it and left. I never leave a hide so Mom dismissed it. I proceeded to find two hides and did my usual alerts on those. To be sure, Mom had me pass that naughty trash can again but I didn’t even give it a glance. I don’t know why I didn’t tell her it was a hide and she didn’t want to guess because a no would mean no title so we left and ended up missing that one hide.
Oh boy, I earned my third NW3 Title, but not the entire title we hoped for. You see at this level a dog also needs to pass each of the four elements three times. I have only passed interiors twice, so that element is missing. Now I get to go try again in a week or so to see if I can pass interiors and get my NW3 Elite Title. Such a snafu was our nightmare and it happened! On the plus side, we found ten of the eleven hides with a total search time of 6:54, that is much faster than the nine we found the previous week in 10:22. Mom and I are getting better and having so much more fun. Fun is the most important goal anyway. We are confident we will get it next time!

Well, even tho it was a “hide”, we think it’s always best to leave trash cans as they be … and you were a good pup to ignore it as generally speaking such things are nasty (the judges were playing tricks on you!) … p.s., sorry we’ve been a.w.o.l, have missed your
adventures … paws, June
No worries, we don’t expect anyone to come by all the time. They put hides on trash cans all the time, so we know that but I didn’t tell my mom it was there.
that silly annoying trash can! Sounds like it was an awesome day no matter what! Keep up the good work! your friend Lilly
It was an awesome day and Mom has the 3 NW3 ribbons she always dreamed of. Now I need to get her that interior one so we can get the NW3 Elite ribbon. We will reach out goals.
Although the fancy titles are nice, this means you get to go on another nosework day -what furn!
We have lots of sniffing days coming up and I can’t wait.
Congrats, you did really, really great so don’t let that trash can be distracting. Hey, that Chicago mural, our Dad has been to that exact spot too. Thanks for joining our Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!
Chicago is a fun place to visit! Trash cans are always confusing for us in trials but Mom is sad I didn’t tell her about the hide. Oh well, next time I will.
Those stupid garbage can!
Exactly!
How dare they trick you with a trash can! Don’t they know how many times we have been told “leave it” when we sniff at a trash can!? Not a good hide! XOXO Sparkle
Actually hides are often on trash cans but normally I tell my mom about them.
The trash can hide is just not fair seeing as we are trained to always leave them alone but we are proud of what you did accomplish, Olivia! Nice work!
Mom is super proud of how far our team has come recently and we look forward to more sniffing success in the coming weeks.
I too wonder if prior comments about “leave it” at trash cans could have affected you Olivia? The best news is you and your mom are havng so much fun together! and you are imprioving your time. Rock O!!!
In nose work, hides are often on the garbage cans so we are used to that but I normally let mom know if there is one there.
You two look so comfy on the hotel bed.
It was a nice bed.
Such a strange way to trick you but you look comfy
I knew it was there but I forgot to mention it to my teammate.
congrats to your NW3 title… maybe that was the trash can from oscar the grouch and therefore you ignored it?
Mom doesn’t know why I didn’t tell her about it as I always tell because I want my treats.
Those ornery trash cans! Well, I’m sure you’ll get your title next time out. The important thing is you had fun and worked so well together!
Our team is really coming together and we can’t wait to sniff again the next few weekends.
A new title. Well done. You’re sure cute.
Have a fabulous Thankful Thursday. Scritches all around and my best to your mom. β₯
People tell me I’m cute and smart all the time at my nose work trials. It makes me happy and my mom really proud of me.
If you had fun and got any title at all, that’s very important and a success!
We don’t ever complain about earning titles, we had just hoped to wrap up this level but now we have to keep on trying to get that interior title.
So sorry you were tricked by a trash can. Hopefully next time it’ll all be clear to all of you. Good luck!
It was a complete miscommunication which rarely happens to us but it did, and at a bad time. We’ll try again next week.
That is awesome!! Iβm sorry you didnβt get what you wanted but you still got that beautiful ribbon. Congratulations!!
We will try again next weekend.
