I narrowed down my list to 10 great reasons to walk your dog. There are many more, but I decided to put a limit on the list. January is National Walk Your Dog Month, making it the perfect time to put out my list. I love to go for walks with my mom, and don’t tell my sisters, but she says I’m her favorite walking dog because I behave so well on my leash.
Why are we such fans of walks? First of all, it’s easy to maintain a schedule with walking. Once you make it a part of your morning and/or evening routine, your dog will become accustomed to and look forward to your special time together each day. You will both develop a healthy active lifestyle as a walking team. Many people and dogs can’t run, but walking is an exercise most can do.
10 Great Reasons To Walk Your Dog
- It’s great exercise for you and your dog
- Dogs love going for walks
- Walking is a perfect time to build your bond together
- Taking a nice walk reduces human and canine stress levels
- You and your pup will be in a better mood after a walk
- Socialize yourself and your dog through walking by meeting other people and their dogs
- Improve your own health, and your dog’s health
- Add to your dog’s mental stimulation by walking
- Both of you will develop an active and healthier lifestyle
- Going for a walk is free and you can do it anywhere, anytime, even in the cold and snow of winter
Sadly, only around half of dogs are walked daily, the average walk is less than twenty mins. Thirty minutes to an hour is recommended, as least a couple times a week. We walk an hour every morning and another half hour to an hour in the evening. Sending your dog into the yard is a nice thing, but it is boring especially if you only have one dog. Walks allow our bodies and minds to get some exercise, as well as our human! Happy Walking!
We are joining our friends at Living Laughing and Barking in Our Backyard is for their Nature Friday blog hop.
we walk our people daily to stay healthy and fit.. ;O)
Europeans are much better about it than here in the US. Thankfully, our mom is addicted to exercise so we get lots of miles on our paws too.
Mom and I love our daily walk!
Isn’t it the best! It is -20 this morning but Mom and I still had a nice walk. The world is so different, looks, sounds, and smells at that temp.
You know mom became a better walker with us because of you all! We lloooovvveee our walks and yes, we love a routine. Morning long walk, evening short walk. If mom doesn’t get a move on in the morning — we are walking/sitting right behind her all morning asking, asking, asking for a walk. When she picks up her sneakers we go wild!! Truly! And, even though as I get older, I am having a tough time hearing — when mom shakes the leash — I come running!! From wherever I am! I don’t always hear mom call me, but I definitely hear the leash! Isn’t that funny? Talk about something being a part of me. Great post! Great list! have a great day. Your friend Lilly
We all love walking and so did Katie and Emma. Katie couldn’t walk very well her last year, and she fell down a lot, but she always wanted to go walking anyway. It is a wonderful form of exercise for all. We’re all happy you guys love your walks too. PS: your hearing of leashes must be similar to cats and can openers!
Clover walks two hours a day in Central Park. Of course s(e is in her wheels but she is my hero.
That is even more special that she does it with her wheels. She is such a lucky girl!
This is a great post, even though, in Gail’s case, you are totally preaching to the converted!

Thank you. She is nuts like our mom!
I’m glad you posted this for my mom to read, maybe she will walk me more often. She got me two new coats and the paw covers you recommended. Her bones and balance not very good in cold weather (or ever); But I am hopeful. She is trying to talk dad into another dog for me. He keep saying NO!
Be careful with her when you walk. Don’t be too wild, even if a squirrel goes by.
It’s good for your pup and it’s good for you too. Being together on a walk builds such love. We spoiled our Angel Little Bit. She got what she wanted pretty much all the time. Not treats though. Those were handed out now and then. We miss her so.
Have a woof woof day and weekend. Scritches all around and my best to your wonderful mom. ♥
Thankfully, we get lots of treats but partly we get them for sports, and we always have to do something to get them when we are at home. Little Bit was a lucky pup.
Plus, you girls are so special and deserve those happy walk times!
Awww, thank you. We all love walking.
Ohhh yes #1 reason is the best…so good for both human and pup mentally and physically. I love the photo of you against the night sky….So crisp and sharp almost like you could walk thru my monitor into my lap
Hugs Cecilia
That last pic did come out pretty nice despite being taken with a phone. We all love our walks.
We love our walks.
So do we!
When she’s with us, Coda gets a good walk/run every afternoon.
I bet she loves that!
We LOVE your 10 great reasons to walk your dog! And we always love seeing the phots of you ladies out walking. Our hairy slobbery sister Cinnamon LOVES her walks. She gets 2 walks a day most days. These have been cut back to 2 very short or even just one when it gets too cold. Then Cinnamon gets extra plays. She LOVES her special Mom time, meeting her furrends and barking at Reggie and Trooper and Ella! Mom likes the walks too, she find them relaxing and meditative (as well as terrific cardio).
Mom might need the walks more than we do. She gets really crabby if we can’t go for our long walks. They are just the best because we are together, getting fresh air, exercise and it is also relaxing for us all. We all get two walks a day too. You are a lucky dog Cinnamon.
