Cat bro Bert in the backyard is now a thing at our house. Mom is tired of trying to keep him inside and she really doesn’t care if he goes out, so he is out a lot. Funny thing is, he stays in the fenced yard. He seems to go out mostly when we dogs go out, but sometimes he is out there on his own too.
He seems to enjoy wandering about in the yard. Once and a while we chase him and he goes for the safety of the pine trees…so he thinks. He could climb a tree, but we haven’t seen him do that yet.
Mom left him out one night which was a bad thing. He started meowing, and I mean really loudly at like 2 am. Mom had to get up and let him back in. He needs to stick with being out when we are out is our current plan.
He is a good looking cat, that we will say. The problem is he is a major problem. Mom and him are not getting along at all. As he ages, he gets more and more naughty in the house and Mom is sick of it. She says she will never ever get an adult cat again, and probably not ever get a cat again because of him.
She feels bad about not liking him very much, but she says then just never bonded and his naughtiness is over the top and she has had it. But…he does enjoy having his photo taken outside in the yard! His fur is still all back and he doesn’t seem to be losing any, so that is a good thing. Maybe Bert in the backyard is a stress reliever???
Of course, we dogs enjoy chasing him around in the yard and sometimes we jump on his nerves. He is never afraid to let us know he doesn’t appreciate our behavior! Mom says he might live forever because he is so irritating, but at least now he can live part of his forever in the yard when he feels like it!

Poor Bert! Animal cruelty leaving this little guy out all night! He adds so much to your family. Bert needs more respect (Rodney Dangerfield). Maybe you could try taking him to cat events, make him feel he is an important part of the family. You should be glad he is not a Maine Coon cat, they are beautiful, but weigh 20-25 lbs. I just saw a tiktok blog where the cats have been taught to speak using those floor mats. They know many words. Bert is smarter than you think. I am a dog person, never had a cat, only barn cats, however, I do support a local cat rescue.
He is not out all night. When we come in at night, he comes in too. He is happy to be out and only is out when he wants to go out. Maine Coon cats are beautiful, but all the fur probably needs a lot of grooming.
Bert is handsome fur sure, some kitties purrsonalities don’t just “mix” well with their families sadly, for reasons not always known … yet as long as he seems reasonably content it’s a good thing. As both a dog-and-cat lover I just wish “all” of them could lead full and
good lives, but just as with we humans, it can’t always be that way.
Bert has always been trouble. He used to chew power cords and stuff like that. Now he can be outside and whatever happens happens. It is what he has always wanted and he can be inside when he wants to be inside. Mom just can’t deal with him anymore as he gets more difficult as he gets older.
In my PBGV opinion, Bert is very confused because he does not know if he is a cat or a dog! I just hope he never decides to leave his yard. It’s a dangerous world out there. XOXO Sparkle
We don’t know if he will ever leave the yard or not, but it is all up to him. At least he is outside a lot and that seems to make him happy but when he is back in the house, he just yells and does all the other stuff he isn’t supposed to do.
That’s very sad, poor Bert.
it made me extremely sad too. I also hope he is not left outside overnight anymore…and….if he climbs up a tree he will not be able to get back down. This made me extremely sad.
He isn’t out all night because it is cold and he comes in before we all come in. If he wants to stay out all night, he can. Our routine is no secret, he knows our schedule. He wants to be outside and it cuts down on all the problems he causes in the house. That cat is indestructible and nothing phases him. We are enjoying some peace during the warmer months with him being outside when he wants.
He is happy to be outside and as long as he stays in the yard, he will be fine. Outdoors is what he always wanted and he has become such a problem inside it helps a bit with that.
So sad. He’s most handsome. I had a mancat many moons ago that was very naughty. I loved him, but he didn’t love me back. It’s the way of things sometimes.
Thank you for joining the Feline Friday Blog Hop.
Have a purrfect Feline Friday and weekend. Scritches to all the furbabes. β₯
Mom and Bert have never gotten along and as he has gotten older it only gets worse. He will be fine with going out whenever he feels like it and he will probably live forever.
we are so sad for bert and for your mama too… maybe there will grow some love back and the bond between bert and your furmily becomes a better one… hugs to you all
Mom never wanted him to begin with and it has only gotten worse over time. He is a problem cat and being allowed to go outside keeps the trouble in the house down a bit which is a good thing.
Be careful out there, Bert. Wildlife is not always nice.
The only true wildlife in our yard is us dogs and some rabbits and squirrels. He will be fine. That cat will survive forever.
Bert Bert Bert….OMCs. you need to learn just who is in charge and who feeds you. Naughty is not a purrty look on a handsome cat like you Bert. At least there has been a type of compromise.
I have never adopted an adult cat. Both ours were kittens. Very odd behavior Bert.
Hugs Cecilia
We will never again adopt an adult cat. Three bad experiences out of three tries is not a good record.
We have a cat here. He used to be an inside/outside cat, but our Mom said no to that, so he is an inside only cat. Our mom has said that Clarence is her one and ONLY cat. How he got here is a long story, but he seems to like the food and has settled down a lot as he gets older. Cats are just very very different than dogs.
He has not settled down and has gotten worse. Cats are not dogs, that is for sure. Mom has had a cat since she was 7, but this may be the last time.
Oh Bert….you are one silly cat!

Rosy
He is the poster cat for “bad boy”.
Bert probably knows your mom never liked and maybe that is why he is naughty. I hope he stays safe in the yard.
She tried in the beginning but he has always done everything that irritates her. It is amazing how naughty a cat can be.
I was wondering when He would finally get his way! ( and you get some peace). Good for Bro Bert!
He likes to be out, so he can be out, at least in the warmer months he wants to go out.
Maybe Bert has heard da saying that only da good die young . . .
Now that could be true because he is old and seems to be quite healthy.
Adult cats that are used to being outdoors, like your Bert or our Teipod SissyCat, are smart enough not to run away from home looking for trouble, they just like the outdoors and it’s good for them.
The naughtiness, is that a litter box issue? If so, your mom.might discuss it with the vet, there are solutions.
He eats electrical cables, has random litter box issues, jumps on the table during meals so he has to be locked up, steals food, eats/chews up things around the house, just to name a few. Generally a bad boy. Mom has had cats since she was 7 and has never had such a cat.
Poor Bert. This makes us so sad. We’ve always adopted adult cats, and have never had a problem.
We’ve never had any luck with adult cats so we are done with it. If we ever have a cat again, it will be a kitten.
