Run free, beautiful Sophie. Since you never cared for dogs, we never spent much time with you, but we always respected you, and your presence in our house will be missed forever.
Sophie had not been feeling well for a couple months. Mom had her to the vet and she was on medication but it didn’t seem to be working as well as hoped. She peed and pooped on several of our expensive dog beds and was living in the basement for a while until she could be trusted not to ruin anything else in the house. Saturday morning, Mom went down to feed her but Sophie didn’t greet her. Sophie always greeted Mom. Mom looked around and there she was. Sophie was lying on the floor, not moving and obviously no longer with us. It happened not long before Mom found her because she was still warm and not at all stiff.
It was a shock to all of us. She had a vet appointment scheduled for this week but it would be too late. At least now, she is free of her pain and whatever else her illness was doing to her. Sophie was always neat and orderly, so her not using the litter box was a big clue she was not well.
Mom adopted Sophie and Bert from the Humane Society in October 2008. At the time Sophie was around one year old. Other kitties were picking on her in the cat room. Mom felt bad for this beautiful kitty and had to take her home. From day one, Sophie was more of a hermit unless she was alone with Mom. She never liked dogs and her relationship with Bert was on and off. They were never very close but in their younger years they were seen hanging out together sometimes. This photo was taken about a week after they were adopted.
As Mom’s office evolved in 2009, still pre-window bench, but getting closer, the kitties loved to sit in the window waiting for birdies.
Sophie could be playful and the kitten in her, even at about three years old in 2010, loved to play in a good paper bag.
Mom used to have a kitty tunnel with the scratcher at the end. Sophie didn’t mind posing. She loved to run in the tunnel and rub up against the scratcher thing at the end.
Sophie hadn’t slept in the scratching post for ages, but she and Bert used to sleep in their favorite scratching post all the time. Bert still does sleep in there now and then.
Sophie didn’t do much besides work on her beauty sleep, and she was a true beauty. Mom took this photo of her in the bathtub. It is an odd place for a cat photo, but she looks so beautiful in there, Mom kept it.
Mom feels terrible she slept later on Saturday. Had she gotten up at her usual time, she would have been there when Sophie passed. She never wants any of us to have to go alone, but it happened. We all loved you in our own way, and we know you loved us dogs in your own way. Mom loved you the most and she is so sad that you are gone, but happy your suffering has ended. Run free, Soph, and we will all meet again one day on the other side of the bridge.
