Becoming an Official Minnesota Snow Hound is something a dog has to earn. We have had two small snow events here so far this season, but Tuesday we finally got a real nice load of snow. Not only is snow and winter for play, there are things a pup has to learn about living with it.
Being as Nelson and I are pretty tight buddies, I took on the job of explaining all the things he needs to know about winter and snow in Minnesota. Of course, a game of chase helps break the seriousness of the entire thing.
This snowfall dumped a good seven to eight inches of lovely powder on us. Previous little snows left grass and stuff peaking out, but now that is all gone. For humans, that may not seem like a big deal, but for pups, it means we have to rethink a lot of things. In order to be a real Minnesota snow hound, Nelson needs to understand what to do in the snow.
- You are allowed to pee on snow. Do not be scared, it will melt the snow and color it yellow.
- Never eat yellow snow.
- Don’t leave toys in the yard in the winter or they will be missing until spring.
- Sometimes it is too cold go be outside for more than a short amount of time.
- Snowbanks are made for climbing and have no money in them. They are a special kind of bank.
- Sometimes you can walk on snow, other times you may fall through.
- The hardest lesson – where do you do your business if there is no grass? Answer, anywhere on the snow.
Aside from issues figuring out the last point, Nelson grasped the concept of deeper snow very quickly. He loves to race around in it. We are all thankful for that because it wears him out!
He is a strong young fellow as you can see here when he is powering up. For Nelson, just running around with himself is a blast!
Do you remember Air Jordan? Well, that is now out, but Air Nelson is totally in! He looks so cute all in form.
After catching a lot of air while racing through the snow, the splashdown can be pretty cool looking.
Overall, our little brother is one happy Minnesota snow hound! He still wants more snow to play in, but we all do. It is early in the season.

I knew Nelson would fit right in where the snow was concerned. Great teacher too and I loved the rules. Don’t eat yellow snow made me laugh out loud.
Have a fabulous Thankful Thursday. Scritches all around and my best to your mom. ♥
Well, Nelson loves to eat, so we needed to make sure he got that rule down.
Those are great rules to live by. But if you can pee on the snow how do you stop yourself when you are playing in the yard and there is no snow.
We can pee in the yard anytime. Mom just doesn’t like us doing our big business in the yard.
wow thanks for such good tipps for becoming a snow dog… we are now well prepared for the snow ;O)
Are you all going to Switzerland or Austria to ski for Christmas? That could be an adventure!
I remember, I remember Minnesnowta! Happy early puppy hood memories ❣️❤️XOXO Sparkle
It would be fun to see how you feel about snow now. I bet you would like it.
I love the snow rules! and the photos!
Thank you. We are enjoying the fluff.
Nelson looks like a natural! We’re sure he’ll have all those rules mastered in no time!

He is still having a hard time trying to do his big business on snow. He searches out a blade of grass and then lets it go, LOL! He will adjust and he watches us, so he knows it is alright.
Snow is so much fun! I can’t wait until I get some to play in!
Hope you get some snow soon!
I am happy to know 4 Minnesota snow hounds….
Hugs Cecilia
We are true winter lovers. It is early to bed around here because we are all worn out from the cold and snow play.
Nelson is a natural!!! He looks awesome. We love snow here too but we don’t get half as much as you guys! Keep having a great time in it! Your friends Chester and Lilly
We hope we get a lot more of it this winter. On the other paw, we can’t be greedy. One must enjoy what they get.
WOW, that was a bunch of snow and how nice you taught Nelson how to have fun with it. Air Nelson looks pretty darn amazing. Thanks for joining our Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!
He is having a blast racing around in the snow, and it wears him out.
He’s already heading for expert level!
He is adapting to it all really well.
Wow that’s some snow air flying leaps of doggie fun there! The photos of you two having fun are super fantastic, great shots.

Thank you. We really enjoy the snow and cold around here.
Air Nelson looks like he’s trying out for Santa’s reindeer team.
You know, maybe that is what he is doing. I know he did watch Rudolph on TV the other night.
Love your ‘dashing through the snow’ way of dealing with it.
We all love snow here, it is our favorite time of the year.
