We are thankful for Speedy Wrecker Service in West Virginia. We have no road trip regrets, but this trip was full of trouble. Day one we hit a snow storm, and then a closed interstate. Day two was even worse. Mom rented a car because she thought it would be a good idea but we won’t do that again! We blew a tire on the highway going 70 mph. The rental car company was not much help and wanted to leave us on the side of the road.
It’s not easy with two humans, three dogs and a ton of luggage if you need road side assistance. We also found it quite scary sitting on the shoulder of a busy interstate with cars racing by. It took about two hours before the rental company got a tow truck to us. Chris was the driver and he was super nice and helpful Just having him pull up helped put us all a bit more at ease.
Mom didn’t want us dogs to get out of the car on the highway. Even on leash, she is afraid something might happen. Chris said maybe I should ride in the tow truck with the humans since I am smaller and much quieter than my siblings. I was fine with that. He loaded the car with Olivia and Nelson onto his truck. They were safe all buckled in just like they are when we are driving normally.
Since I was in the other row of seats, Mom could easily grab me and carry me to the cab of the truck where we grabbed a seat on the bench. Mom and I were both scared and shaky, but together we calmed each other down.
The ride took almost an hour and a half, so I settled in and enjoyed the ride as best as I could. We wished we had a spy cam to see what the other two were doing in the car.
Chris is a good driver, but still the ride was loud and bumpy in his truck.
He dropped us off at the airport where we could get a different rental to continue our journey and hopefully make it to North Carolina in time for our nose work trials. The car with the flat was left in the damaged vehicle lot. Thank goodness for Speedy Wrecker Service for helping us out and for being so kind. Unfortunately, it was not the end of our car rental nightmare. More on that tomorrow.

how scary1!! we are glad you all are ok and we are grateful for peeps like chris…
It was super scary, but we all got through it safely.
that#s what it is… we either fear such moments…and btw: I’m with you for walking the dogs on or next to a highway … that is nighmare scenario… sigh…
If that wasn’t enough, there’s more to come. Oh dear!
Every day a new issue. The third rental finally got us back home!
That is all just awful. At least these we have cell phones to be able to deal with problems like these. In the “old days” there were only occasional phones on the side of the road.
Very true, but we were in the mountains in West Virginia and the reception kept going in and out on Mom’s phone, our navigator could not make a call or do anything with hers.
OMG I am so sorry you had to go through all of this!!!!! Thank God for Chris!!! Thank God when your tire blew you were all ok!
It was immediate, so it was scary trying to slow down and pull off, but we made it.
That is really scary. I imagine those being towed were totally confused.
Most likely, but they had each other and there was no place for them in the truck.
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh no not car trouble on a road trip….the worst…Thank goodness for a kind and help man
Hugs cecilia
All the people we met in NC were super friendly as was this guy. They all loved us too. A blow out tire is not a good thing.
Oh our goodness!! We are always so impressed with your mom and how good she is at managing challenges! And this one was full of tricky/scary moments. We look forward to reading tomorrowโs postโ we think?? Guess we know the endingโ youโre all ok!! right!!?? your friends Chester and Lilly
It was just one thing after another for six days, but one has to keep moving forward and we got to our nose work trials which was the main goal. Everything else was kind of rescheduled.
Oh my dog! We are waiting to hear the rest of the nightmare story! I’m glad Chris was nice. You do look content looking out the truck window, Madison. XOXO, Sparkle
Once I realized Mom and the navigator were with me and we were in for a long ride, I relaxed, but I never closed my eyes. Every day we wondered what would go wrong next. The only thing that went well was our nose work trials.
What a trip! Thank God for Chris! I can relate big time! Six years ago, I loaded up my two dogs, gear and a “co-pilot” in my new van to go to the GBGVCA Nationals in Ashville, NC. Got totalled in Sevierville at about 4:30 am by a kid who was driving without lights, without a license, and did not speak English. Fortunately, other people saw it, called police, paramedics and tow trucks. LONG day! Elbe didn’t want to get back in a vehicle. We could only rent a subcompact. Two of the five crates we were bring were tangled beyond recognition, two more were bent. all the goodies I had brought for the silent auction had to be left at the tow truck place. I ended up with bad concussion which I am still recovering from. BUT…we got there, had a pretty good time, and many thanks to Nancy Mclean and Tessa, we got met with some soothing items for our muscles and brains. what a mess, but WE survived and so did the dogs.
That is terrible. Our troubles were all more nuisances than accidents, thankfully. Being in an accident with the dogs would be so hard. Sorry that all happened to you.
My goodness, that was quite the ordeal but thankfully Chris was able to come through for you. Thanks for joining our Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!
It was quite a trip but we survived and reached our goals.
Oh Dear! Not fun at all! Mom used to work out of town and drove the highways and lots of byways too and mostly with Queen Nellie Bellie. She says she never met a tow truck driver or a wreker driver who she did not like they always seemed to like dogs and cats! We are glad that you guys are OK and we are looking forward to reading more about your travelling adventure (and your nose work).
Chris was very nice and helpful which we were thankful for as the people at roadside assistance were not very nice.
Wow what a trip, best to stay at home ๐
We thought that a lot, but in the end we reached all our goals and are glad we did make the trip.
The most important thing is that you are all safe! Thank you, Chris, for being their angel on earth!
Exactly! Tow truck drivers rock in our book!
Oh no, so sorry to hear about your travel tales with the rental. Glad everyone was safe after the tire blow out.
We won’t be renting a car again and if we do, Avis will never be the rental company. They were terrible.
