We tried to get sunrise on the St. Croix River in Stillwater last weekend. Mom was working at a nose work trial all weekend and she took me and Nelson along. Since we had to be there by seven in the morning she thought it would be fun to stop in Stillwater at sunrise for some photos.
She was right about no one being around. We saw a few runners but other than that, we were the only fools at six fifteen in the morning. Unfortunately, during the almost hour drive from our house, the sun went away and the clouds came in. The sunrise was not what we had hoped for but so is it sometimes. We went down to the water to have a look at the historical lift bridge, the focal point in Stillwater.
I got up on a short pillar of sorts and Mom took a head shot of me with the bridge in the background.
We also got on the lift bridge which is now a pedestrian and bicycle bridge. If you are not from here, this bridge takes you from Minnesota on the Stillwater side to Houlton, Wisconsin on the other side. Madison had a nose work trial in Houlton back in July. It was built in 1931, so it is pretty old. There is a lot of traffic crossing the St. Croix River so they decided to close it to traffic and they built a big new bridge down the river.
This is a shot of the new bridge which opened in 2017. It is four lanes wide and has a bike/pedestrian lane too. It is truly beautiful. As far as sunrise that morning, this photo of the new bridge is the closest we came to it. Mom and Madison drove over it the first time on the way to the trial. It is rather funny as it is so fancy but it goes from pretty much nowhere to really nowhere. Maybe one day there will be more things on either end of it.
Our favorite find of the morning is Pigpen. We had no idea we would see him, but all of the sudden, there he was next to the bakery on Main Street. Nelson likes him, so he took the photo with Pigpen. Look at all the delicious sweets he is holding. We just love him as he is so cute, despite being dirty.
We only had about twenty minutes to wander in Stillwater, so we didn’t get a lot of photos. On the way back to the car we had Mom take our photo by this nice mural. I’ve been to Stillwater before, but it was Nelson’s first time. He says he wants to go back but not so early next time. At least we didn’t have to deal with crowds or traffic!
Iβm joining my friends at Living Laughing and Barking in Our Backyard for their Nature Friday blog hop.
Both of the bridges are beautiful and we love the mural and what a great shot of you sitting with Pigpen, Nelson!
Boys together, both love snacks too!
Pigpen!!!! What a great surprise. Mom said “there’s Linus!” Silly Mom — we said “Noooo that’s Pigpen.” He’s my brother’s favorite too! We love these pictures. Have a great day. your friends Lilly and Chester
Thank you. Emma always did photos with the Snoopys we found but now we are ready to get the other characters when we see them. We love Pigpen too!
You guys are fools! I donβt know why anybody gets up that early to go sightseeing
Mom is a morning person but even for her it was a bit early. At least there are no crowds at that time of day!
Ah, the cloudy sunrise. Story of our lives here in Scotland.
But still, you guys posed nicely, as always.
And I’m envious of your meeting with Pigpen. He’s someone I think I could get along with!
Toodle-oo!
Nobby.
I like him since he obviously likes snacks. He was a nice surprise.
Seven in the morning, that’s early, but well worth it though by the look of the pictures.
At that time of day there aren’t many people around so it is good for photos.
we love pig pen too…. he has a little bit of weim-crime inside when it comes to dirt and mud LOL
All of us love mud, but Mom doesn’t share our love of mud. Such a bummer.
Did Pigpen steal Linus’s blanket, or is that not a blanket draped over his shoulder? It’s hard to tell. Like you all, I love ALL the Peanuts characters – have since I was a little girl.
BTW, I love all the photos, even the cloudy sunrise! And especially that “head shot” of you. That is such a great shot!!
We don’t know what that is on his shoulder as it is brown, but it could be Linus’ blanket dipped in chocolate. We all love the Peanuts too and they are all around our area since Charles Schultz was born and grew up here.
Very lovely photos!
Thank you.
What FUN! Thanks for sharing your early morning photos!
It was early, but peaceful and we found some fun stuff.
OMDs I am now a big fan of Pigpen…look at all the chocolate.
That is one beautiful bridge…and long. Years ago there was a draw bridge between Morehead City (where our daughter and son-in-law live) and Beaufort on the NC Coast. Of course growth eventually had the two cities come together to build a higher bridge fore the boats to pass w/o the bridge being drawn.
Hugs Cecilia
That sounds a bit like how this new bridge came about, but we are glad they saved the old one.
Adorable photo of you sweet doggies ~ always love to see you ~ Xo

Thank you. Hope you are having a nice holiday weekend.
I love the wall art of how it looked a century ago, and you two handsome models… you are so precious
I dream of cloud cover, now that we are in CO the sun is harsh, the atmosphere thin, and it’s around 100F for the next month.
LeeAnna and Milo
We are happy for some cloud cover during the hot part of the day. It is still super hot here and we hope to see an end to that soon. Stay cool.
What a beautiful place, we especially like the mural!!
xoxo,

It is a really nice mural.
Y’all always get to see so many pretty and interesting places. That waterfront area sure looks mighty nice.
It is super popular, which is why if you go in the summer and you want to avoid crowds, you need to go early.
Sunrise is my favorite time, it’s almost always still and quiet and beautiful.
You took lovely photos in spite of not being able to see much of the sunrise itself.
We are always up and out for morning runs and walk really early. It is the best time of day as the air is fresh, no one is out, and it is so peaceful.
Lovely sunrise pics, guys. We think that’s the best time of day!
It is our favorite time of day too.
