Life in the backyard these days is rather different. We have dogs on two sides of the yard, and we have mud, lots of mud. We all love being out in the yard, and Mom loves us having a yard. Mud makes things hard because Mom isn’t a fan of mud covered dogs.
The end of February, Mom decided to buy some silt fencing. Why not fence off Nelson’s running track that is the worst mud of all. Sadly, it didn’t work because the ground was frozen and Mom couldn’t get the stakes in the ground. Instead, she decided to lay it down and anchor it with little flags we had in the garage. It covers the mud and that is all that matters.
Nelson doesn’t mind it at all, and he can stand on it or run on it without becoming a mud magnet.
He spends a lot of time standing waiting and hoping his girlfriend will come see him at the fence. Silly, love sick boy!
On the back of our yard he has Winnie. She is older, and not nearly as interesting. Once and a while she will run with whoever is out there, for a few moments.
Wait, I think they are all running to the other girlfriend.
Yes, she saw him playing with the other girl and got a bit jealous I think. He doesn’t have any issues with both girls being together, but we feel sorry for Winnie.
I pretty much leave him alone to do what he needs to do. Sometimes I go and tell him to stop it. I like to be the fun police when I see too much fun going on.
Bailie doesn’t care much at all about Nelson’s troubled life in the backyard. She comes out, enjoys the fresh air, and does her own thing. Occasionally she might run up and down the fence once.
If we didn’t have Nelson needing to run the fence day in and day out, our yard would not have any issues. But…Nelson doesn’t plan to stop the running, so for now until things get warm and dry out, the “race track” will stay on the ground so we can all be out and have fun.
We’re joining our friends at Living Laughing and Barking in Our Backyard for their Nature Friday blog hop.

My mom totally agrees with yours, Nelson. Mud is yucky and dirty and the race track is a great idea!
Mom says I’m such a guy because I’m easy going, but I love girls and I don’t mind getting covered in mud. My sisters rarely get into the mud outside.
What fun to have neighbors to play with!
Lots of fun going on in the yard, that is for sure!
Your Mom did a very clever solution to your mud problem. Maybe all of you and your neighbors need a playdate?
I’m kind of scared of my girlfriend when the fence isn’t between us because she is a pretty big girl.
Why is it that humans have such a problem with mud?
Toodle-oo!
Nobby.
It’s so silly! Mud isn’t a big deal if you ask me.
What an excellent fix for the muddy area and OMDs I’m proud of Nelson for not being bothered a different surface.
I suspect his obsesson with his girl is all that is on his mind. Happy Nature Friday
Hugs Cecilia
We are all used to all kinds of different surfaces. In our sports we have to deal with slippery floors, shiny floors, all kinds of things.
Mud is yucky but girls are fun.
I don’t mind mud but everyone else in our house dislikes it.
Your silt track was a darn good idea and I’m glad you got to see your gal pal Nelson!
It keeps me fairly clean.
yay mud! We have dog neighbors too but we don’t run — we bark! Like crazy dogs. We love it but mom and their dad say, no, no, no! We are wondering — is Winnie a doodle? We have a fondness for doodles you know! Great photos! Keep enjoying things. Your friend Chester
Winnie is a doodle! I howl and bark all the time when I’m running. The neighbors can all hear it and it makes Mom crazy!
Our Mama remembers when Jakey used to be the one causing muddy yards baxk when we lived in Texas…boy did he love to run the fence. Of course we love running the fence with our neighbor dogs too but we have a rock based yard by the fence, and haven’t had a problem with mud. Mama is VERY happy about this!
We’re glad your Mom found a way to keep Nelson mud free!

Mom has thought about rock or wood chips but she really wants to have the grass. We shall see how it progresses.
We know all too well how quickly grass can disappear with multiple dogs running along the fenceline. Our tiny back area lost it’s grass years ago and is basically a very large dog run now. With the addition of the ‘Pony,’ he’s become quite the fence runner to the next door neighbor’s cranky dog. I’ve had to correct Wilson because the other dog loses his mind and crashes into the wood pickets. For such a smallish dog, he’s pretty aggressive and Wilson is so large, getting him wound up would not be good. We’re making progress but sometimes things can escalate very quickly. With it being basically dirt, the mud when the area is wet is the pits. I empathize with your mom. Brilliant idea with that silt fencing. Kudos to her for thinking of that solution.
We are hoping the grass can come back somehow. I guess time will tell.
What a great solution to the mud issue! It looks like you need whatever that is around the inside of the whole fence.
Mom says we need to pave the entire yard, LOL!
Just tell your mom to remember, running the fence builds stamina and speed for Fastcat, so silt fencing is worth it for now. Our mom says we may copy that design for the path we have worn in our yard, and now that there are three of us and baby Lydia has long, long legs and love to run (and dig), we may have to re-landscape the entire yard!
Mom is not happy about my mud track. We have to figure out how to get grass to come back.
