We are getting ready to deal with the impending fireworks. Mom says it is like a slow motion catastrophe happening, seeing the tents going up all over town. If only fireworks were illegal like they used to be it would be so nice, but it is not. With the 4th being a Thursday this year, it will mean at least four days of noise in a row. Most people never take the time to think of how their ridiculous love of noise can be a nightmare for others.
Thankfully, Nelson and I don’t mind thunder or fireworks but Bailie and Madison are over the top terrified. The two of them keep the rest of us up as we can’t sleep with their shaking, panting, and jumping in and out of bed. If people would simply use this stuff on the 4th only, it would not be so bad, but it will go on randomly for weeks.
- Many people need to be up and at it early even on holidays and holiday weekends. They will be kept up late because of all the noise, but those setting off the booms don’t seem to care.
- We have to be up early for sports, and we know ahead of time that we won’t be getting much sleep with the noise and two terrified hounds.
- There are a lot of people with PTSD who are very scared when all the fireworks start going off.
- Those setting off fireworks need to realize the dangers they face as well. Each year, many are hurt badly for not correctly handling fireworks.
- You need to be careful walking your dog around the 4th of July as these fireworks land all over the place and it is dangerous if your dog should happen to ingest any of the debris.
Mom has some anxiety medication for Bailie and Madison as we know the noise will go on for a few hours randomly and they will be so stressed. Hopefully they can be a bit more calm with the prescription pills. It is sad they have to take drugs to not be terrified on a holiday.
During this scary time:
- Make sure your pet has proper ID in the event the run out of fear.
- Don’t let pets outside unless necessary.
- Keep your dog leashed.
If you are someone that enjoys setting off your own fireworks, think about others before you do. We are hoping our worst neighbor goes out of town this year so we don’t have to listen to that stuff for hours on end. How about you? Are your dogs scared, do you have any good tips to help calm pets during this terrifying time?

I wish fireworks were never ever invented!!!!!!! Molly used to be so afraid and thankfully, Duke is not – yet, if ever. We so feel for you, Bailie and Madison and we feel for your mom too♥
It seems that when we reach a certain age we suddenly become scared of thunder and fireworks. Mom doesn’t know why but she always hopes some of us never develop that fear.
we cross our paws for all pets that day and the night… we will have the same 10 days later… the only one who can not get enough of this firework stuff is da phenny… he is not normal, we are sure…
We never mind it when we are younger but at five or six, we start to get scared. No idea why that happens.
We think that fireworks should only be used by those organizations/business that put on shows. These are not toys, and there really is no reason for any of it. All of them are dangerous; all of them disturb pets, wildlife, and people – and they cause fires. In our area, all fireworks are illegal, but people go and find them anyway.
We totally agree. That is how it used to be and then big business managed to get laws changed and now it is a nightmare every year.
Great post about fireworks ~ we would be happy to live without them ~ and don’t like giving drugs to my doggie but will if it helps him be calmer ~ sigh ~ hugs,
Wishing you good health, laughter and love in your days,

Mom doesn’t like it at all. The professional ones are fine, but these do it yourself ones are horrible and some even shake our house. Not nice at all.
People should not be allowed to buy fireworks. I hate them
We are all in your boat on that one.
Fireworks don’t stop just because they are illegal! At least not in Missouri. And they happen in our neighborhood for graduations, birthdays, homecomings – you name it.
Thank you for reminding the “Choir” – how do we get this message out to the “Congregation?”
Our moron neighbor sets them off on random days all year and they are like a sonic boom, our house shakes and it sends Mom flying to the ceiling as she is usually sleeping. It is nasty!
You nailed it, they are horrible. They are legal here too and our HOA sets them off at the lake, which is right across the street from us. Thanks for joining Angel Brian’s Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!
The businesses that do them and only for a short time on a holiday we can deal with, but the random ones all night for days and weeks on end need to stop.
Don’t get Mama started….even though we are pretty chill, Angel Jakey was a basket case during fireworks season! The pawrents always watch action adventure movies on boomer nights with the volume extra loud.
At bedtime, Sunny always has music playing….and during boomer season, they turn the radio on in our bedroom too.
Also, even though we have a fenced in backyard, we only go out on leash when boomers are present anywhere in the neighborhood.
Thanks for the wonderful tips!
xoxo,
Rosy
We are really dreading next weekend because we know people will be setting them off every day for at least the four days. It is so rude, scary, and dangerous. Wish we could get it to stop.
Oh dear me I really don’t like loud sudden noises either and I know your sweet K9 ears are way more sensitive than mine.
Hugs Cecilia
It is a very scary time for some of us.
Great post and very timely too. Neither of us likes fireworks, but we try to stay inside. Our Angel Sister Ciara had a horrible time with fireworks. The sound of one even very far away triggered seizures in her. It was terrible. There should be a way to enjoy the 4th without the bangs.
Woos – Misty and Timber
We wish it would stop, or at least only be that one night for an hour or less. The randomness of it all makes it impossible to be prepared.
They are illegal in my state, but lots of idiots go to the next state to purchase them.
They used to be illegal here. Some people did buy them elsewhere, but it was not bad like it is now.
They are illegal here, it doesn’t help. Law enforcement only comes out if someone calls to complain. No matter what, I’m one of those who has to get up and go to work the next morning…
We always have to be up early too and it makes for a very tired day since they set those things off at all hours randomly.
Worst day of the year. We can only hope the weather is so bad it will reduce the number of fireworks. I did notice some of the surrounding metro areas are switching to laser shows instead of fireworks. With the heat, the last thing anyone needs are errant sparks to set off fires on balconies and back yards.
Laser ones are fine but they are not the problem. It is the boneheads in the neighborhoods that set off the sonic booms randomly for days on end. If it rains, they simply wait a day. Sadly, it is all about making noise, not doing something for the holiday.
