Dog drain danger in the snow is a real and scary thing. Mom has had at least one dog in her life for thirty two years and never had a problem with a street drain. She knows the drains in the street can be dangerous. When we are puppies she is super careful we don’t fall in or anything but as adults, we enjoy sniffing the air they put out sometimes, but that is the extent of it.
As you know we got a good foot of snow last week. Our plows are good and they keep the streets plowed really well but sometimes they don’t plow all the way to the curb. We never worry about drains as they normally peak out of the snow quickly because of the air they put out that melts the snow.
Nelson and I were doing our evening walk together last Friday. I was looking for a good place to go to the bathroom. With the snowbanks everywhere it makes finding a flatter spot difficult for us girls. I found a place that was flat with just a few inches of snow and was settling in to do my business when suddenly my front right leg disappeared into the snow and ground where the arrow is. Mom saw it all happen and panicked realizing there was a drain that was still completely buried under the snow. There is no way to know where drains are if they are completely covered. She sprung into action and lifted my leg out and moved me to the pavement. While moving me, more snow fell into the drain making it easier to see.
Thankfully, I was not hurt. I have small paws and thin legs helping my leg come out as easily as it went in. It was in all the way up to the top which is amazing! I’m lucky my other front or back paws didn’t slip in too. Mom was very fast when she realized what was happening.
After so many years, Mom has never experienced the drain danger in the snow. Now we know and will be more careful about finding out what is under the snow. Nelson and Olivia have bigger paws and legs which could really get stuck. Since this caught us totally off guard, we wanted to warn others with dogs to watch out for those drains that are under the snow, even after a few warm days.

All of my Airedale have fallen into a catch basin at least once when they were puppies. They learn fast but when they’re hidden, the peeps have to remember where they are. We are so happy that you weren’t hurt.
There are so many of them, and we walk so many places there is no way to remember where they are. It is amazing this one didn’t melt the snow like all the others do.

It was a miracle as I didn’t even have a scratch. Thankfully Mom caught it right away and pulled my leg out. Scary for us but ended well.
That was scary for both you and your Mom! Snow can hide all sorts of dangers.
That was definitely a shocker. Never ever has something like that happened so we now know to just stay in the road if we can’t see to the curb.

They are too small for people to fall into or get stuck in, but for dogs it is a hidden danger.
Gooodnees me that was scary. I will not walk over any grates in the side walk…I just know they will cave and I will drop into a deep dark hole full of sewer and rodents.

LOL! Remember two years ago we had a duck nest under our bay window. The eleven eggs hatched and Mom marched them all to the road and they all fell into the sewer grate. The police came and I think they were able to find seven or eight and took them to a safer spot. Dangerous stuff.

Mom is always so cautious but never imagined one would be covered with snow like that and only a few inches, but I was looking for a flat potty spot and didn’t realize what I was about to step into.

I didn’t know what happened but Mom went into a panic and then Nelson got all crazy because Mom was upset.
GOOD warning! We have not had any drain accidents, but once came VERY, VERY Close when our Dachshund wanted to explore a sewer drain.
We have never had any issues but this caught us totally off guard.
