It’s fireworks season, keep your dog safe! Not all dogs are afraid of fireworks but many are. Even if your dog is not afraid now, that may change in time. Most dogs develop their fear of fireworks between five and eight years of age. These tent stores are everywhere and people buy fireworks like crazy and set them off in the weeks before and after the Fourth of July.
How To Keep Your Dog Safe
- Leave dogs at home when you expect fireworks.
- Don’t leave your dog out in the yard during fireworks.
- Keep your dog away from fireworks, they are not something to chew on or play with.
- After the fireworks, be aware when taking your dog outside as there may be pieces of fireworks on the road or in your own yard.
- Consider crating or keeping your dog in a secure, quiet place in your home during fireworks.
Use Good Fireworks Ettiquette
- Always practice good safety when setting off fireworks.
- Keep fireworks away from children and pets.
- Dispose of fireworks remnants correctly.
- Don’t set off fireworks late at night as they may disturb neighbors.
- Be aware of people who may suffer from PTSD and are not able to handle fireworks.
My GBGV Life is joining Comedy Plus for Awww Monday.

All of the above applies to kitty cats, too. We cannot control thunder and other unexpected loud noises that frighten our pets ~ but yes, we can and must make their environment as safe, as secure, as calm and quiet as possible when these events are coming.
Mom dreads fireworks too because she can’t sleep through them and we are early risers. This year for the first time we won’t be home and we are hoping a hotel is not as noisy.
Mom HATES fireworks because Molly was so afraid of them. As for me, so far they don’t bother me and mom hopes it stays that way.
None of Mom’s dogs had a problem with fireworks until they were around three, then one day the fear of thunder and fireworks just showed up. Nelson and I don’t care about them and Mom hopes we never are bothered by them.
its that time of the year… we prepare our ears for da bastille day too… and we hope all have great howlidays… fingers crossed
Mom dreads the 4th of July because of all the fireworks. Sad really.
Great post on keeping our babies safe. We took all these measure when Little Bit was with us. She was always safe.
Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week. Scritches to all the pups and a hug to mom. ♥
Our cats never cared but most of mom’s dogs have been scared. Now it is only Bailie but Mom worries Nelson and I may one day be afraid too.
Luckily we are pretty good when it comes to fireworks…but we are still hoping for the day when little drones decorate the sky instead.
Thanks for the great tips!
xoxo,
Rosy & Sunny
That would be so nice. Mom likes to sleep so she hates the fireworks and Bailie is a hot mess. Hopefully you guys will stay aloof to the sounds.
ALL Great reminders! especially for our veterans and our pups! Olivia, you look smashing!!1
Thank you. I feel a bit silly but we were there early in the morning so no one saw me.
If you want to have your pet on the 5th of July, keep them indoors on the 4th of July. Make sure your furbuddies are microchipped! Many vets, shelters will microchip your pet for $10 or less during this season. Lucy has lost about 80% of her hearing so the fireworks don’t bother her much anymore. As a younger dog, she was afraid of thunderstorms and fireworks. She would find me and climb up in my lap when the fireworks started. She would sleep with us, in the big bed, when thunderstorms rolled through the night.
Bailie is still afraid of thunder and fireworks. Mom cuddles with her in bed like a stuffed animal and that seems to help her stay more calm. We dislike the entire holiday because of the people who ruin it with their loud, obnoxious, all night, and for weeks fireworks.
Some people who live near here are, sad to say, just plain self-centered, selfish a-holes who shoot off their da— fireworks whenever they effing feel like it, including at two and three o’clock in the morning! And the police can’t or won’t do anything about it. Thankfully, my Z Kids aren’t afraid of them or of storms; but I’m sure other animals – domestic and wild – are traumatized by them.
We have a jerk behind us and over a house who sets off the ones that make our house shake. He also loves loud cars, loud everything. We wish he would move.
OMDs I wish I had GBGV’s in my area with such fun and appropriated fireworks…fun and quite.
Love it
Hugs cecilia
Quiet would really be nice but probably never going to happen.
We agree with all that. The Mom doesn’t like fireworks or any loud noises and doesn’t understand why anyone would want such nonsense.
It is just stupid. Dangerous, irritating, bad for the environment, no reason to do it.
Stay home with your dogs
Mom would never go anywhere on the 4th of July. She would worry about us.
Excellent advice. Our cats generally just go to a corner and try to snooze, but Grandma and Grandpa’s dog, Lulu, is terrified, they have to give her a sedative the vet gives them. They don’t like it, but otherwise she’d hurt them or herself.
The sedatives don’t work for Bailie unfortunately but she is better if she cuddles with Mom.
Those tents and signs are a horrible sight and they are all over the place here.
That is sure true! They are ugly and it is a ridiculous waste of money and only causes problems.
We hate the 4th of July because of the fireworks. Our neighborhood goes crazy shooting them off, terrorizing military veterans and pets. July 5th is traditionally the day with the highest numbers of dogs ending up in shelters.
It is just a bad thing all around and sad since it is supposed to be a happy day to celebrate but we dread it every year and this year as a three day weekend will be really bad. We are leaving town.
