I’ve got some basic Halloween Dog Safety Tips for you to keep your dog safe this Halloween.
- Keep your dog in the house after about five pm. If your dog needs to be out after that time, always go with her and if she needs a walk, make sure she is on leash. You don’t know what might pop up that could scare your dog and cause her to run.
- Make sure your dog doesn’t sneak out the front door when you are handing out candy to the trick or treaters. It’s best if the door is gated or if your dog is secure in another room or in her crate.
- Don’t force your dog to wear a costume. We dress up all the time making it normal for us but most dogs are not happy about wearing a costume.
- Keep the candy away from your dog. Chocolate can be deadly, raisins can cause renal failure in dogs and other sugar filled candies and gum may contain chemicals that are toxic for dogs such as xylitol.
- Halloween night and the following days, don’t let your dog grab candy or wrappers of the street. Kids often drop things as they wander the neighborhood and if your dog ingests something it could cause harm.
- Many kids carry glow sticks, these too are dangerous for dogs. Never let them pick up something like that as they may puncture it and the toxic substances will be ingested, often causing your pet to become ill.
Even the most chill dogs may become spooked on Halloween. It is a scary night. The best way to ensure your pup is safe is to simply leave her at home in a safe, out of the way spot. Give her a stuffed Kong, bone, or something for her to work on and play some music or have the TV on to drown out all the commotion outside.

Very good tips – especially for the next few days when candy wrappers, broken pumpkins & seeds, flashlights and other types of lights and enticing things are hiding the bushes and on sidewalks.
A weekend Halloween is the worst, so be careful out there.

Oh yes, kitties are not big fans of all the crazy stuff.
We sit outdoors to hand out treats, no need for the door to open over and over, giving the cat a chance to run.
