Here we are at the Portland Head Light on Cape Elizabeth. The area was originally called Headland which is where the Head Light comes from. Last week we were in Maine and took one day to do tourist things before my nose work trial. It was nice to have a relaxing day after two long driving days.
We drove about an hour to get to Cape Elizabeth and we were not disappointed. What a beautiful park area it is with the ocean, views, and walking trails.
It is a really pretty area and the Keepers Quarters are amazing and portray the look of the East Coast. The original Keepers Quarters were built in 1787, this current model was constructed in 1891 as a duplex and housed the lighthouse keepers and their families until 1989.
The weather when we visited was perfect which makes the Keepers quarters and the lighthouse look so amazing. This is a view from the other side. We walked the trail along the ocean for a bit to get a real good look at the area.
Mom grabbed shots of the ocean waves crashing into the giant rocky shoreline. One can feel the power in that water. It would be terrifying to fall in or to have your boat pulled into the rocks.
The cliff down is pretty steep as noted on the sign behind us. Mom thought a photo of us here would be kind of funny. No worries we were secured so nothing could happen to us.
There is also a long peninsula on the one side of the bay with what appears to be another lighthouse of some sort. We can’t find any information on it or what it does but it does take a beating from the waves too.
Here is a rare shot of us with Mom and the lighthouse. It is just such an amazing area we are glad we got to see it. The United States Coast Guard still maintains the light and fog signal but the Town of Cape Elizabeth maintains the gorgeous property. If you are in the area, we suggest visiting the Portland Head Light at Fort Williams Park, it is definitely worth seeing!

It is so well kept, just amazing and we loved watching the water crashing against the big rocky shore too.

Mom is always doing the photos. She figured out the self timer on the big camera but then we need a place to put it or the tripod. Sometimes she just feels like getting a photo with us.

That is my father’s favorite lighthouse! I have never been, but my parents have gone several times. Your pictures are gorgeous, and I love the picture of you all together. I’m happy you didn’t get too close to the cliff!
Mom lived in Germany for ten years and could see the Westerhever Leuchturm from the beach by her house. It is very famous too. This one is gorgeous and with the weather, it was ideal for photos. We had a fun time sightseeing.

Mom brought the fancy camera to try to get some better photos and it seems to have worked. It is well worth the extra drive to see and then you can walk around on all the trails too.

Those are really lovely pictures. Lighthouses are wonderful to visit. There are lots of them up and down both coasts and each one is different. Lots of history!

We love finding fun and/or interesting things to see on our road trips and we also read up on the history or reasons behind things too. It makes travel more interesting and somewhat educational.
