This year, Bailie’s third birthday party was not what we had all envisioned. She had a wonderful birthday week with lots of fun activities, but when Katie took a turn for the worse, the party plan was changed.
As usual, I was in charge of baking her cake. Because it was a warm day, I baked a banana cake with strawberry yogurt frosting. I got to work the night before so it could chill in the refrigerator and be ready for her special day. It was an easy cake to make, and after sampling it along the way, I can tell you it was tasty.
We got a photo of Bailie with her cake. She could barely hold back from diving right in as it smelled so good. She may have left a bit of drool on the top, but she was able to restrain herself. I think being a big girl of three helped out there. Bailie is growing up.
Katie was doing so poorly, but we knew she wouldn’t want to ruin Bailie’s day. We were hoping she might want to have some cake too. Bailie took her cake to Katie and they did a nice photo together. Sadly, Katie had no interest in the cake, but if you look in the background the photo bomber, cat bro Bert had his eyes on the prize.
Next Bailie got her gift from us all. A new stuffed wabbit that crinkles and squeaks. She loves toys that make a lot of different noises.
She is still running around squeaking that wabbit. This toy was a real good choice and she super happy with it.
Unfortunately, with all the things going on, Mom forgot about the cake and left it on the counter. Cat bro Bert takes advantage of these situations and managed to dig into the cake on his own when we were gone. It turned out to be fine actually since none of us were in the mood for a party after losing Katie, and with the yogurt being out of the fridge for a couple hours it was no longer safe to eat. There are no photos because the photographer was in no shape to work either. We did decide to go to nose work practice to get our minds off the sadness. Being Bailie’s birthday, we went to SmallCakes and got pupcakes and cupcakes for our friends. As you can see in Bailie’s face, she has lost her birthday sparkle. Her oldest sister was gone, and so was her cake she never got to taste. She did enjoy her pupcake a bit later, though.
In the evening when we were back home trying to come to grips with all the events of the day, Bailie got her new antler to chew on. She got to choose it by herself at the pet expo the weekend before.
It was definitely not the day any of us had ever dreamed of, but we did the best we could with the circumstances. Overall, Bailie’s birthday week was a good one, but her actual birthday party was a rough one. We are happy that Katie could at least be with Bailie for some of her special day. It meant a lot to all of us.
I understand that nothing was like before …. and I’m sure Emma and Bailie had a super heavy heart that day too… Dear purple girl we wish you all the best for the new year of age… may only good things come to your crib….
The expression on Bailie’s face with her pupcakes says it all. May you celebrate Katie’s life and love every year on Bailie’s birthday.XOXO Sparkle
Bailie has had some weird birthday connections. She arrived on mine, and Katie left on hers. Not sure what to make of it.
We are so sorry about your sweet Katie..we too had a recent loss and it does take the wind out of your sails..what a lovely party you had though and a memory to keep forever close to your heart..gentle hugs to you at this sad time ..loves Fozziemum xxx
So sorry for you too. It is just hard no matter when or why it happens, but it is part of life and we have to deal with it.

Every birthday will be Bailie’s and a celebration of Katie’s life
It’s not what we wanted, and out of all the days Katie lived it happened on Bailie’s day. There has to be a reason for it.
When we lost our beautiful boy, Hunter, I spent a lot of time wondering why it had to happen at all, why it had to happen that day/month/year, why it had to happen to me,… It took a while but I finally understood why Hunter died when he did. He waited until he knew we were strong enough to bare it.
Bailie, happy barkday to a special dog! I’m so sorry about Katie.
Thank you. We are all so very sad, but we tried to make Bailie’s day as good as we could.
Given the circumstances I think Bailie had a great birthday and that it was probably good to have something fun to focus on. My heart breaks for you with your loss of Katie. Take care of each other and take time to grieve. Sending love and hugs.
Mom scheduled us for so much stuff right now, we can hardly think, but it helps us keep our minds off moping around being sad.
So sad for everyone. I’m glad the birthday was still ok though. I’m sure Katie would have approved of the pupcakes.
Katie loved those pupcakes. We had some about two months ago. We did the best we could with the birthday.
Sue said it best, I believe. Happy Birthday, Bailie – again – and may all your memories of your sweet Katie be happy ones. Hugs to all from me and puppy kisses from Shadow and Ducky.
Thank you. We all have to learn to adjust to whatever life deals us.
That’s for sure. Our love to all.
It sounds like you all did the very best you could, given the circumstances. Hugs to you all.
We did what we could and overall, her day was pretty nice. Sad, but nice.
What a celebration. Bet that cake was good

The pupcakes were tasty. We never got to eat the cake I baked.
Awwwwww Bailie you made the mostest of a difficult situation. We love the new WABBIT and you did chews a GOOD Antler.
The new wabbit is a lot of fun, and Bailie is also enjoying working on that new antler.
It stinks dat Bailie’s big day ended up being so sad. Big hugs for y’all.
You would think with all the days in a year, stuff like this wouldn’t happen, but it did. We will just live with it and accept it.
That wacky Bert! LOL! I’m sorry the day was a rough one but I know y’all made the week special. We ? you!
We miss you guys! Did you see Bailie is offering up virtual BlogPaws huggles on Instagram? Times are tough, but Mom has had so much planned to keep all of us busy which has helped.
We’re so sorry Bailie’s birthday celebration had to be overshadowed by such a sad time. We think you did well to make it as special as you could anyway. It sounds like Bert did his best to try to cheer you all up with his antics. π β₯
Bert only thinks of number one which is food and then number two, which is himself. We are all learning to adjust around here and next year Bailie can have a real big bash to make up for any shortcomings this year.
Yes, that was a tough day but Bailie knows she is special for so many reasons.
She is having some trouble dealing with it all, but she will be fine with a bit of time.
I’m so sorry about Katie. I’ve been thinking about all of you.
Thank you. We are trying to figure things out without her, but it is not easy. Still a bit too fresh.
All in all I think Bailie was still happy. I am sorry, but Bert cracks me up

Bert is an opportunist period! He stole from poor Katie’s bowl right while she was eating the last months. Bailie was alright, but she is the one having some trouble now adjusting. She will be fine with some time.
What a bittersweet Birthday for Bailie, but we agree, now you can celebrate Katie’s life on Bailie’s Birthday.
Big Hugs to you all,
Beth, Dory, Jakey, Arty & Bilbo
Very true. Bailie and birthdays is just a thing. After all, she showed up here on my birthday and never left!
So glad you make the best of a tough situation. Sometimes you just need a Plan B. And the ability to put one paw in front of the other.
Love and licks,
Cupcake
We are taking it slow and doing things one at a time. It’s the only way.
I’m so sorry that Bailie’s birthday didn’t go quite as planned. It was a tough day all around, but I know she felt the birthday love from everyone in her special family.
Her entire week was full of fun things here and there, so she feels alright about it all I think.
We’re so sorry for your loss, especially on Bailie’s birthday. A special ear scratch to Ms. Bailie as a belated birthday greeting from me and Sam. α¦
Oh, she loves that!
The best laid plans as they say. So sorry this Birthday was so sad. Bert was there to lighten the day. hugs.
All the days in a year and a lifetime and everything has to be on one day. There must be a reason. We will understand some day.
I’m surprised you even got a birthday party put together at all! that was a LOT of saddness to deal with. You girls did VERY WELL!
It wasn’t our usual party, but Katie would want Bailie to do some celebrating at least, and we wanted to celebrate with her before she left us.
Sorry the party did not turn out as planned.
Bailie just as one life ends another lives on. Maybe some day you’ll realize how special it was to share your birthday with losing your beloved Katie. Love Dolly
We figure there is some big meaning to it all, but have yet to figure it out.
