Is your dog a healthy weight? Did you know over 50% of pets in the U.S. are classified as overweight pets? This is such a sad statistic as pets themselves are not at fault. As pet parents, it is important to provide veterinary care, healthy nutritious food, and exercise to keep your furry family member in the best health possible. Keeping your pet at a healthy weight adds to quality of life and life expectancy!
The first step in getting your dog to a healthy weight is to determine if he is in fact overweight. The best advice is to take your dog to your veterinarian for regular check ups at least once a year, but this short video can also help you determine if your dog needs to lose some weight. Work with your veterinarian to determine the best weight loss plan to achieve the perfect weight for your dog.
The food you choose for your dog’s health and wellness is very important. Hill’s® Science Diet® Perfect Weight, is a dog food formulated to help achieve a healthy weight and improve quality of life. This breakthrough blend of natural ingredients contains chicken as the number one ingredient, prebiotic fibers for gentle digestion, and is 100% precisely balanced nutrition! Perfect weight formula is available for adult dogs and starting this month for small and toy breeds, which make up 40% of the dog population, as well. Be sure to measure your dog’s food each mealtime, maybe use a smaller bowl to make the portion appear larger. Choose the appropriate diet for the dog’s size and age.
Dog weight loss doesn’t have to be difficult! To aid your dog in his weight loss and to help him maintain a perfect weight, incorporate plenty of exercise including walking or running as well as play time. Introduce new games to help your dog burn calories while having fun and bonding with you! If you need some additional motivation, sign up for some fun classes such as rally, or agility. As always, before an exercise routine, check with your veterinarian.

Great post, always important to get the word out how important proper weight is in a animal (and human).
At least humans should be able to help themselves, but overweight pets suffer and through no fault of their own.
It is great there is a food out to help doggies loose weight.
Every little thing helps.
Previous paws Mia used to luff Hills but I came with a bag of Royal Canin which I luffs
Establishing what is your ideal weight is the first problem I finks. If my peeps listened to the Vet I would be like a stick!

My sisters and I have always been at a healthy weight, but we also exercise a lot. Everyone has to determine their optimal weight and from there figure out how much food to eat. Calories in, calories out.
Yep healthy certainly = happy in our book. Have a terrific Tuesday.
Best wishes Molly
Knock on wood we are healthy and happy pups.
Great post! We can’t wait to see what Miley looks like in 10 weeks! 🙂
Thank you. My gramma’s cat is on this food and it has helped him lose some poundage. Transformations are always fun to see!
A healthy weight is so important to our pets health. I know my Mika could stand to lose a few pounds, she gained a tad over the winter for some reaon. I am definitely interested in the 10 week challenge.
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
You should give it a try and add in some exercise and Mika will be running sled dog marathons again in no time 😉
it’s a never ending story in my crib and I’m great that it is possible to get food what helps to chase away some lbs. if we have the next scale-collapse-day, we will buy a big bag… for me and my mom :o)
Luckily around my place we don’t have weight issues…well cat bro Bert is chubby, but we have resigned ourselves to the fact that he will just be that way.
We have to go Tomorrow fur our Annual Physicals… and we already KNOW that our Dogtor is gonna say that ERNIE is a Blubber Butt. SIGH….
Oh dear. I hope he isn’t rude about it. My sisters and I are always about the same, year in, year out. Lucky I guess, but we live with a drill sargeant, so no surprise I guess. Sometimes it is more of a boot camp than a home I think.
Some great advice Emma, you know we are all about the healthy weight, so anything that promotes that gets a thumbs up.
We are the same way at this boot camp…ummm…I mean house.
We are also living in a boot camp lately…Seems Mama is always wanting to go for walkies or play in the yard…The good thing is that it is fun!! Thanks for the great review!

I would rather live in a boot camp, have fun, and eat snacks than sit inside all day getting fat. Good to hear you all are out and about.
We are doing great and Bentley is within a couple of pounds to his ideal weight. WooHoo!
How are the 6 pack abs coming along? Still a couple months until BlogPaws to work on that 😉
Some of us around here need to focus on that purrfect weight thing!
We have chubby cat bro Bert, but we decided to just accept him as he is because the moment he drops some weight, he starts really stealing from the rest of us.
We are happy to be able to say that our dogs are all at a healthy weight. But we know so many aren’t, so I’m glad there are options for food out there like this that can help people and pets out.
Good for you guys. Life is so much better when you don’t have extra weight to carry around.
We always tell mom it’s muscle

My cat bro Bert tries that one too.
I have always kept my dogs 2-3 pounds over their ‘suggested weight’ – that way they have something to fall back on if they get sick – it seems to have worked as all my dogs have lived very long lives.
I think if you have a medium or larger dog a couple pounds isn’t a big deal, but for small dogs it is a lot of weight. I toggle between 38 and 40 and the vet says I’m fine.
Callie seems like she might be a little bit overweight… She doesn’t seem fat when you look at her from above, but she’s got some tummy flubber that hangs down. Her old mom says she likes to go outside, so I am going to try her with a harness once the weather is nicer.
My cat bro Bert would be slim if he was outdoors, but we want him as in indoor cat. Once they get a taste of the outdoors they want it even more, so other than when he sneaks out and tries to run away, he has to stay in. We think he was outdoors before we got him.
Hill’s has come out with some amazing diets to help with weight loss over the last few years. 70% weight loss in 10 weeks are some stunning statistics!
Our vet said the prescription weightloss formula is selling like hotcakes and working. Hopefully some pets will lose the weight and keep it off.
My dog lost the weight last year and so far we’ve managed to keep him from gaining it back. If it were up to him, he’d rather be chubby. But we’re trying to keep him healthy.
Some dogs and some people are happy being plump I guess. We have a cat like that. Hope he keeps the weight off.
With the Doodle Doc on our back about proper nutrition and all our walks – we are staying in shape. Thank the Doodle!
That is awesome!
