Backlighting is the subject for week 1 of the #PetPhotographyChallenge. I like to make sure my photographer keeps honing her skills, so I signed her up!
What is backlighting?
What is backlighting?Β It is when you are shooting directly into the sun to capture your subject, in this case, Bailie. The object of the exercise this week was to clearly see the subject and the backlight, not to create a silhouette. When done right, the light should create a rim of light around the subject, which is seen here on Bailie’s head and back. This week was extra tough as the best time of day is really sunrise or sunset, but with temperatures below zero most of the week and a layer of ice on the ground, times and options were severely limited. After trying for a few days, Bailie’s freshly groomed furs were able to capture the essence of backlighting pretty well!
Have you tried shooting with backlight? Do you like the photo my photographer took of Bailie?
How can you join the Pet Photography Challenge?
Would like to give the challenge a try? It’s not too late, you can join in at anytime. You don’t have to be a blogger, you only need a pet. The brains behind this challenge belong to Kama Rueschenberg from ChiPets. Hook up with the Facebook Group, Pet Photography Challenge if you are interested in working on your photography skills!
Beautifully done! Pawsosme. π XOXO, Sparkle
Thank you.
We might try that for me since I am so dark I look like a black spot
Edward (& Lily)
Madison has a dark face and is also hard to get good photos of.
You did perfect, great shot.
It was a lot of trial and error, but we are happy with what we ended up choosing.
I’ll have to take a look at this challenge!
You should join in. It’s totally informal, so if you skip a week or post late, no big deal.
I knew you would ROCK this challenge! I am thinking of joining, but do you have to participate in EVERY challenge? I put in a request to join but I am still thinking about it.
Give it a try. It is all for fun and voluntary. If you skip weeks here and there it is fine. The main reason to join is to try to improve your photography and help others with theirs. No pressure.
I always have a tough time getting backlit shots right, and this morning just came across a really helpful breakdown I’m going to try to use next time I shoot into the sun – http://bensasso.com/blog/shoot-tips-back-lighting/
We don’t do a lot with backlight because it is difficult. Honestly, my photographer wanted to skip this week because it was just not working out but she is one determined human and finally got a decent image. Great tips on that link! Thanks for posting that!
That is very cool and a darn cool challenge too!
This was week one! We are a bit afraid about the next fifty one weeks!
Your photographer did a great job! I’m excited to see all the photos from the Pet Photography Challenge!
We are excited and scared. This first week was tough, but we are always up for a challenge! No challenges makes life/photos boring!
Your photographer did an excellent job! We still might join this challenge, but just couldn’t get to it this week.
It definitely jumped right into the deep water in week one! We are excited to see what else comes up in the next fifty one weeks!
Haven’t seen the challenge but looks like fun.
Something for Skipper to do in his spare time π
Mama say she is going to join on up! It will be a great way to keep her out of trouble!!
Smileys!

A dog always has to keep their human busy or they sure do find trouble!
A pawfectly and flawlessly completed assignment. Well done!
Thank you. We are pretty content with the result.
When done well, backlight looks SOOOOO cool! Paws up on this picture, all the way! Woot!!
Thank you. It took a while to get just the right one. Nothing beats a glowing Mohawk on Bailie!
You took a very nice photo!!! Great job!! Good luck on your next challenge:)
Thank you. We are looking forward to it.
Great job with this challenge
Thank you.
Very cool shot. I just joined the group and missed the first challenge.
re your comment yesterday – how fun that our moms are a like! Though she definitely has my assistant beat with moves as she has never lived overseas! Also, that she gets up in the pre-dawn mornings, too!
We never knew the similarities! Kind of fun what one finds out reading blogs! The first challenge was tough, so we are happy this week is a bit easier!
It came out nice? We have not had much sun here lately so that would be the challenge!
We didn’t have much sun that week and then trying to fit in a photo session when it was out was not easy.
