Backlighting is the subject for week 1 of the #PetPhotographyChallenge. I like to make sure my photographer keeps honing her skills, so I signed her up!
What is backlighting?
What is backlighting? It is when you are shooting directly into the sun to capture your subject, in this case, Bailie. The object of the exercise this week was to clearly see the subject and the backlight, not to create a silhouette. When done right, the light should create a rim of light around the subject, which is seen here on Bailie’s head and back. This week was extra tough as the best time of day is really sunrise or sunset, but with temperatures below zero most of the week and a layer of ice on the ground, times and options were severely limited. After trying for a few days, Bailie’s freshly groomed furs were able to capture the essence of backlighting pretty well!
Have you tried shooting with backlight? Do you like the photo my photographer took of Bailie?
