Last Wednesday was a horrible day as we had our annual family vet visit. I’m terrified about going to the vet, along with kitty sis Sophie. My sisters and cat bro Bert love to go to the vet! I don’t know what is wrong with them! Since I am so scared, I have to go first with the kitties and then I get to go back to the car and relax. It is rather embarrassing hanging out in the waiting room with a couple of cats!
Usually, we have a big exam room with lots of room for us all, but this year, we had a small corner room. Mom decided to leave my crazy sisters in the car and then bring them in when she took me back out. It’s better that way as I don’t like anybody or any dog when I’m at the vet. I shake like a leaf and try my best to hide. Cat bro Bert is cool as a cucumber and only wants to get out of his kennel and play around.
I got my weight and am still holding at a nice 36 pounds. All my vitals are good, and my senior panel blood work came back normal. Mom asked about my eyes because they appear to be a bit gray to her. The Vet said it is old age creeping in, but they look great. It is common for this to appear in dogs and becomes noticeable after age ten normally. Guess what? I’m ten. My vet said I will need to start using glasses for reading or computer work. I told the vet I already use glasses so it’s no big deal for me! I’m super healthy, strong and athletic, but somehow, I cracked a tooth. I’m not even a chewer! My sisters eat the bones, antlers, etc, I don’t. No matter, I will need to have my tooth extracted next month which makes us sad since I have such nice teeth otherwise. Mom has never had a dog or cat with a broken tooth and she is taking this find pretty hard especially since I’m the least likely one to have this happen. I’ll be having my tooth taken out after my birthday and will keep you all posted. I also had to get my immunizations which I don’t like at all, but they are necessary.
We didn’t get many photos this trip because the room was so small and with two vets and two assistants, it was also super busy. If you have heard of the new dog flu going around and wondered about getting the immunization, we decided to do it. This bad flu is really hitting Minnesota right now, not to mention, we travel a lot and are active in dog sports, so it makes sense to be protected. We will get the booster next month and then will be covered.
The kitties got their exams after I left and were in the middle of it all when my sisters came in for their turns. The second vet was actually a senior year vet student, and Madison was in love! I have to wonder what dog in their right mind wants to be in love with a vet? Kids!
After his exam, cat bro Bert got back to his usual exploration of the entire room. Both Bert and Sophie are at perfect weights, have great teeth and good vitals. No need for them to come back until next year.
Bailie and Madison were arguing over who got to be examined first, if you can believe that! It ended up with them being kind of examined together. Both of them are at good weights, although Miss Madison lost a pound and could really stand to gain a few. They both have healthy chompers and perfect vitals. To give you an idea of how silly those two are, they got their injections and didn’t even care! They wanted to keep snuggling with the vet who gave them their shots!
The final report:
- This year the visit was super fast, just an hour for all five of us, and we get the “herd” discount!
- Everyone is at a perfect weight and we dogs have nice athletic builds!
- Sophie has a small cavity like thing on one tooth, but no need to do anything with it right now.
- I am the loser of the day needing to have my tooth extracted. Because of the way the tooth is, there is no point in seeing a doggy dentist as they would have to remove it as well because of the damage and condition of the tooth.
- The main thing is we are all happy and healthy and we are thankful for that!
Glad all went well at the vet but sorry to hear that you have to lose a tooth. Don’t let your mom feel bad about it as it’s just one of those things. Love Dolly
She does feel bad because no pet has ever lost a tooth, and I’m the only non chewer in the bunch. Not fair.
Emma! I chipped a tooth too! Mom was surprised. I do like to chew, but not that much. The vet is keeping an eye on it. So far, we don’t have to have it extracted. I hope not!! So great about all of you getting such a good report! Hooray!! I am kind of like your sisters and I don’t mind the vet. Lilly, however, she is a lot like you. Great post Emma! Have a great day, your doodle friend Dash
Hope the chip remains just a chip. This extraction thing isn’t sounding like a real fun adventure at all. At least I am healthy, and that is most important.
I’m glad everyone got good news at the vets. That’s too bad about your tooth. I wonder what you could have done to break it?
I just don’t know how it happened. My sisters chew on sticks, bones, antlers, hooves, everything. I might gnaw on a marrow bone now and then, but I’m always very gentle.
It’s nice they give you the herd discount. Torrey hates the vet, shakes, tries to get away, just like you Emma. Roxy isn’t thrilled, but will endure it without too much fuss.
Torrey is smart! One never knows what could happen at the vet. Scary place.
So sad about your tooth, Emma, that is a real bummer! I love going to the vet. In fact I go tomorrow for my 2nd flu shot. VOVO, Sparkle
I’ve never liked it even as a puppy. No idea why it is so, but I’m scared to death of the place, and I’ve been to many different vet clinics in my life. Scared of them all!
Sorry about your tooth Emma. Benjamin here – it’s not such a big deal having a tooth removed. I’ve had a few and I always feel sooo much better when the nasty one is gone. Plus I can get some extra treats when I work the PBGV guilt trick on my Mom when it’s all over.
WOW! we have a hard time with just two of us at the vet. But we both like going to the vet. Elbe is two now, so sometime real soon he will go in for his elbow and hips x-rays. Mom looked at his gums and said, hum…I think you need your teeth cleaned as well. Elbe has no idea what that means, but he thought getting an extra rub on his gums was fun. Our only problem is if we do not go together on all outings, whomever stays home has a fit the whole time. Dad is NOT amused!
We normally go in teams. I prefer to go alone and be home alone, my sisters like to do everything together, so they do it that way. Works well for us. Elbe is awfully young for a cleaning. I’ve never had mine cleaned, but since I will be under, they will clean them. Our brushes keep our teeth and gums in good shape.
What a crazy family you have, Emma, liking going to the vet! π Cricket is exactly like you and of course, you know Luke is another whole story. Samantha is the only one that is pretty good about it (though I do think she tried to bite the vet tech once when they were drawing blood).
We’re glad you got mostly good reports, but sorry about your tooth. It doesn’t seem fair you should be the one with a broken tooth when you don’t chew on all the hard stuff!
Mom was in total shock as she anticipates it happening with my sisters. She is sad for me, but we will get through it. Things could be a lot worse!
I am so glad you all are so healthy and the visit is over. Sorry about your tooth though, we know that’s a stressful thing.
I haven’t lost a tooth since I was a tiny puppy, so it will be all new to me.
my oldest that just passed away, never really minded, she was such a good girl. never had to sedate her for xrays, ct scans, chemo, iv injections, nothing except the tests that needed to be sedated. the vets always said she was the perfect patient. different story with my middle child, she cries and hides behind mom or anything else she can find. the baby, now 7, is pretty good. going to the dental vet, she just opens her mouth. the middle child is a scary cat, chicken all the way thru with the vet and doctors. she even has to be sedated to do her nails. glad everyone had a great report card. i go to a dental vet specialist, maybe they can do a root canal to save the tooth. my vet does fillings, root planing, gum graphs, crowns, etc. people come from all over the country, east coast, canada to see him. he started the dental vet dept at ncs vet school. he does not approve of the antlers, bones, etc. or pull toys. my reg vet said when antlers became popular, she was inundated with calls from people where the dogs had cracked or chipped a tooth.
I’ve never liked antlers. My sisters chew them now and again, but not much. We play tug a war with regular stuffies and we have occasional bones, but I’m not much of a chewer. The wild ones love to chew bones. We discussed going to a doggy dentist, but I can’t remember the reason why, the root canal would most likely not be an option for me π We’ll see what they find when I’m out and they can have a real good look/x-ray, etc.
all in all, a pretty good report
We are all healthy and that is most important!
these were fabulous photos and all in all it was a great trip! I am so sorry about your tooth sweetheart, you will be ok!!!!! Please tell Mom not to worry, but I know that is hard. I am seriously wondering if when Dakota got sick a week ago if it was the dog flu? He had been at the groomer’s the week before (the groomer is at the Vet, it is attached and is owned by the Veterinary practice that we go to)………he got sick exactly one week after he was there….strange…….
The current flu is highly contagious and is real bad, even causing death in some dogs. I think if it was the flu you would know. Bailie brought home a different flu a couple years ago and it was so bad, Mom was scared. Of course, I got it about a week later. Thankfully Katie did not catch it as it may have brought her down.
My sweetie! I am so sorry about your tooth. I hope it doesn’t hurt you. Of course, I could have told the vet that you were perfect in every other way! *Wink Wink Hubba Hubba Neither of us are big fans of the vet but Pierre enjoys making friends in the lobby.
I’m sure I will survive, but it is terrible to know I have to go back to the vet and spend part of the day there to have them steal my tooth. At least I’m super healthy otherwise.
What great visits, sorry you have to have a tooth removed, best to get the bad thing out. Bert is so cute, always looking for a snack.
He has food on his brain every moment he is awake, and he probably dreams of it too!
What fun to have so much company at the vet. Well…. Maybe “fun” is the wrong word, but what an adventure! Good luck with the tooth removal next month. Maybe you’ll get some applesauce to eat when you get home…. yum.
Love and licks,
Cupcake
I’m a real drama queen, so Mom is thinking I won’t want to eat anything for a couple days. We will see what she gets for me so I want to eat! Fun is what cat bro Bert, Bailie and Madison have at the vet, not me!
Sorry to hear about your tooth. Once it’s gone, i am sure you will feel better. My labrador boy Merlin loves going to the vet. The strange thing is he will let male vets trim his nails and look in his ears, but he won’t let female vets do that.
I let anyone do those things and I’m good at the vet, but I shake like a leaf and constantly try to run and hide somewhere. My sisters just want to play and love up the vet. Weird!
Really glad you all are very healthy, sorry about the tooth Emma. Mica is ten and doesn’t chew on anything hard, her tiny bottom front ones are worn down a little but that is it.
We have had the horrible flu for about 3 years. Since we are not really going anywhere we did not get the vaccine. Good luck:)
Katie was almost 14 and had no tooth issues at all, not even a cleaning. I don’t know how I did it to my tooth, but it is a bummer.
I’m sorry you have such an aversion to the vet. I can’t really say as I blame you. It’s good to have that tooth taken care of now, before it becomes problematic. All in all, that was a pretty good visit. And bless your mom for taking you all at once!
Mom has an aversion to human doctors, so maybe I picked up on that from her? I’m really bummed about the tooth, but it will have to go to keep from getting trouble started in my mouth.
I’m sorry that you have to have a tooth removed. I know how that goes–Barley hardly ever chews on anything and Rye chews on EVERYTHING, so I was horrified when I found out she had a slab fracture on her premolar. If it makes you feel any better, I can’t even tell Barley is missing a tooth unless I open her mouth and look hard!
We are happy it is one no one sees, but I will miss it when I am chewing I’m sure. It’s so weird as we found out about it just days after reading your post about Barley. I’ve had Mom order me a case of my favorite Alpine Wabbit Stew so I won’t starve while recovering.
