Ready, set, sniff n’ go! Last week Bailie and I got to participate in a Sniff n’ Go fundraiser at Active Dog Sports Training (our nose work school) to help build our nose work community. It was lots of fun, and Sarah, one of the volunteers, offered to take some photos of Mom and me doing our searches.
The event consisted of four searches one right after another in each of the four elements, interior, vehicle, container, and exterior. Each search had a three minute time limit. First up was the interior search. This was me at the start line getting focused.
Interior searches can often be done off leash, so I did this one off leash. The space was a small office with lots of clutter and some utilities in the corner.
And well within the time limit I found the hide inside the wheel of the shelf.
The pressure was on as someone offered to donate $5 for every participating dog who found three out of the four searches within the time limit. I had one down. Next up vehicles.
The search had a car and a van. I elected to go around the van first. The bumper smelled interesting, but not what I was looking for.
I moved over to the car and found the hide in the wheel.
Time to signal Mom so I can get my reward and it makes two out of four! Yay!
Containers were the third search area. Lots and lots of boxes! I better have a plan in mind so I don’t miss any of these! I think I’ll start with going around the perimeter.
And I found it, Mom, reward, please! This is three out of four, I’m on a roll and having so much fun!
Last but not least we headed outside into the cold for the final search. Note, at the start there is always a starting line, once my nose passes it, the timer starts, so we have to practice starts so I get focused and don’t move ahead too soon.
This one was pretty easy, it is in the front corner of the base. Mom and I are both so happy, I found all four! I’m really improving! Bailie did the same searches and also found all four in the time limit so we both did great!
Now, one more thing. The Sniff n’ Go event was a fund raiser for Minnesota score room leads. We need these people to help our area get more nose work trials, but they need to be trained and certified by the NACSW which costs money. The score room leads are volunteers, so the money earned goes towards their travel and training costs. Nose work is a pretty new sport, and we need help building up the nose work community in our area. If you participate in nose work, know someone who does, or just want to support our sport, you can purchase the above t-shirts, the money will go towards training our score room leads. The shirts say “My Nose Work Dog Nose the Truth on the front and Trust Your Dog on the back and available in red or periwinkle, I just have a photo of each color and side. Click on the color link to go to the order page. Shirts must be purchased by March 13th, so don’t wait! They make great gifts too! Of course, I did order one for my mom!

Great job girls!! I love reading about your sniffing adventures!
Bailie and I love to sniff!
ha I guessed it that it was the car… it says saturn so it contains something from outer space I think :o) Well done Apaws&Bravo!
It did have a bit of a cosmic odor to it now that you mention it!
Great job and well done. You should be in the police force. Have a fabulous Friday.
Best wishes Molly
We would do well with it I think, but we will stick to fun and competitions instead because Mom doesn’t want to be a police lady.
WooHoo, all four! Yay, well done
Loves and licky kisses

We were pretty proud of ourselves both finding all four!
So proud of you both!
When you enjoy what you do as much as we do, it makes it a bit easier, but Mom was real proud of us too.
You two are awesome!! Great job! xo Chloe and LadyBug
Thank you. Just doing what we were born to do…sniffin’.
Way to go, Emma, (and Bailie!) I love your expression when you signal your find. Wishing you continued success in your searches. XOXO Sparkle the PBGV
Thanks. I love to search.
Hooray!! Great job Emma! Have a great Friday!
Thanks! Let the weekend begin!
Good work Emma – congrats on the perfect score! We don’t do nose work, but we support any activity that gets you and your family moving, so we’ll buy one!
You guys do your food hide game which is a form of nose work fun 😉 If nothing else the t-shirts make for a conversation piece.
Great job girls, what a fun days dream pictures.
Thanks. It was lots of fun.
So much fun! Love seeing you hard at work….or play…or both? BOL!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
It is really hard work, but since it is so much fun too, it is hard to call it work.
Sounds like a fun event and you both did great! Have a great weekend!
It was great to get in some informal practice and do some blind searches.
Awesome work! I love how serious Emma’s face gets when it’s time to get down to business.
Mom thinks it is funny as I am very serious about my nose work, Bailie is totally opposite and doesn’t take it real seriously at all, but she does do it well anyway.
Great work, Emma! We loved the way you looked at your Mama for leadership (or maybe treats?). Our Mama wishes we would do that a bit more often!
Smileys!
Dory, Jakey, Arty & Bilbo
I look at her when I find the hide to signal her which coincidentally causes a treat to appear in my mouth 🙂
Wow! Great job!!! Mom is very curious how we would do in something like that!
I bet you all would do well and love it. It takes a bit to move into odor and the different searches, but the whole process is wonderful for dogs and humans too.
Very impressive! Alas, I wish I could get Sam to focus long enough for nose work. With his big honker, you’d think he would be a natural but he’s just too ditzy. Sigh. 🙂
Bailie loses focus sometimes with nose work, but not me. Perhaps it is the reward? For dogs that have difficulty finding hides or lose interest, try a very high value hide, something Sam doesn’t get any other time. We use the expensive freeze dried treats, some people use cooked chicken or homemade liver jerky. He has to learn the reward is so special it is worth his efforts.
Sam’s attention span would barely remember even high value treats! But he’s adorably sweet, so what the heck. 😉
That was some pretty fantastic nosing around!!!
Thanks. We had a great time and did well.
Way to work those noses girls! Woo Hoo! We are so proud of you both!
Don’t try to sneak anything past me, Bentley. I nose what is going on 😉
Hi Y’all!
Congratulations Emma and Bailie! Those are great pics of you and your Human! And even greater nose work from you and Bailie!
Isn’t it wonderful about Mischief Monday?! In my post yesterday for Barks and Bytes I posted the comment Jen left on my No Mischief Monday post saying the hop will return this coming Monday.
Y’all come on by,
Hawk aka BrownDog
I did see your post with that yesterday, but I wanted to hear it straight from the Newfie’s mouth before I could believe it and not think it was just something mixed up in slobber and drool! TGIF, my friend!
Great job. You are both so clever! Looks like a lot of fun too. I love “fun”draisers or awareness builders that incorporate physical activity (we featured our friend’s TunnelPawlooza event for a therapy pool today)
Great job by you and Bailie, Emma! That is so great that you helped to raise money for your nose work community. I enjoy seeing photos of you doing the nose work so much!
Thank you. We sure love doing our searches!
Good job, you guys! Would you mind elaborating more on your decisions for picking tracking and nosework classes? I’m trying to pick one and am having trouble deciding. I’m leaning towards nosework because it is mostly indoors and there seems to be more trials and stuff.
We wanted to start in the winter and we both wanted to do the same sport, so nose work was the only choice. But if you are the only dog, either sport would work. The thing with tracking is it takes A LOT of space and time and you need to go to find areas where you can track, so for that reason it is much more difficult to practice. If Bailie passes her TD test I may try tracking, but it is a huge commitment for multiple dogs. Nose work can be done anywhere, any time, it is much easier to do the homework. Unless you really want to be out tracking in fields around 500 yards at a crack, I would suggest nose work for you. I also think you said you are a bit reactive, and nose work is geared towards reactive dogs as you are always kenneled and there is NO interaction of dogs, even at trials. I think you would love it and it really wears a dog out. There should be a beginning nose work class as we all start with hunting for treats in boxes and go on from there. Can’t wait to find out what you choose.
Great job both of you in finding all 4! I find your nose work adventures so interesting!
As you saw we are going to start Harley in a nose work class soon so we should definitely pick up one of those shirts!
You need a shirt for nose work for sure! Can’t wait to hear more about how your agility progresses and how the nose work goes.
You two girls (and your mom) are doing great! Looks like you are having fun.
Millie & Walter
We are having a blast. I so enjoy the search and Mom is amazed at me every time!
Way to go on all the finds!! Sounds like fun. And for a good cause as well.
We are happy to help out in any way to get more nose work to our area so we don’t have to travel for trials.
Very nice job on finding all 4 searches & raising some money!!
We definitely need more events in our area, so we are hoping to raise enough for our score room leads to get their training.
Good job and congrats on fining all of the hides!
Now if we can just do the same in the real competition!
Good job! So exciting, even sitting way back here in the cyber sidelines. I am so jealous, our noseworks instructor up and left the area and so did all the nosework related activity (one of the drawbacks of living in the boonies.)
That is so sad! Our school is the big one in the area, but there is another school if something should happen. We are so hoping to get more trials and really build things up.
That is just great Emma. You and Bailie are really doing well with nosework!
We are in an upcoming ORT and element specialty trial, so we will really see then.
Emma, I have read this 3 times usually at night when my brain is stopped. You do an amazing job of finding the hides, especially in the short time you have been learning, Baile is also doing extremely well. Congrats on finding all four in your 3 minute time limit. You also always make it look like a lot of fun:)
Everyone loves to watch us work because our tails go 90 mph and then stop when we find the hide. We do pretty well, but we still have a lot to learn. It is a great sport!
