Do you treat your pet like a human? Inquiring minds like mine would love to know. I’m hanging out on the mini-human playground while contemplating some questions about dogs being treated like humans.
Recently Healthy Paws Pet Insurance took a survey of pet owners and below are the results:
- 16 percent have taken their pet to get swim lessons
- 35 percent have a social media profile for their pet
- 55 percent have video called (FaceTime, etc.) their pet
- 47 percent have either a pet sitter or doggy daycare for their pet
- 62 percent have a pet-specific car seat or seat belt
- 9 percent have purchased a pet fitness tracker
What did we answer to these questions?
- Yes, Olivia has had swimming lessons.
- Of course, we are all on all the social media channels.
- Mom has video called me on our remote treat dispenser.
- Madison and I have been to daycare, and we have all stayed with the pet sitter.
- All three of us wear our All Safe Autobahn Approved seat belts in the car.
- Emma had a fitness tracker, but never really wore it as we don’t need to monitor our fitness.
How about you? Do you treat your pet, dog or cat like a human? Some people find it ridiculous, we seem to think it is just normal these days.
PS: Happy National Dog Day today!

Interesting facts. Over the weekend or maybe it was last weekend, we noticed someone with a sticker in their window advertising pet sitting/walking service. This is the first that I’ve seen in our area. Not being a pet owner, I find it hard to imagine that such services are needed but I have two bloggy friends who do this for a living and after seeing that 47% of the pet owners take advantage of such services then maybe there’s more to this then I thought. Have a furtastic week! π
For just kitties the neighbors watch them, but for any of us dogs, we need a dog sitter if it is a super long day or overnight.
Well, if you count the grandkids, then yes, Lucy has a pet sitter so that she doesn’t have to be boarded at the vets very often. I can’t really say that she has any of the other features. She does appear on my blog often enough that some might think she has her own social media presence. Have a blessed week.
Well,that is a couple items!
Arenβt they human?
You sound just like our mom!
they call us the breed with the human brains so… the answer must be yes hahahahahah
We are smarter than humans, but don’t tell them that.
We believe that If you do NOT treat your warmblooded pets like family, you shouldn’t have them. Dogs, cats, birds NEED mental stimulation to thrive. Even/especially hunting dogs need to be house dogs – as they will hunt better for you. Now, reptiles, amphibians, arachnids (think tarantulas) crabs, fish (EXCEPT some Cichlids) are a different story. DO NOT attempt to take you fish to a playground slide that dumps into a wading pool – they will get sick or worse. Most cats do not like swimming lessons – nor do most birds (unless they have webbed feet) or arachnids. Specialized car seats with lids are essential if you decide to take your aquatic pets for a ride ( WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?? – unless it is to the vet). Pet sitters are VERY important for all critter/family members – unless you never go anywhere. SOCIAL MEDIA – that is also a good thing for ALL pets. You get a boost and it helps strengthen your bond with your pet; also the pets can watch themselves if you post videos and continual loop them. Pet insurance – we highly recommend it for fur and feather folks. Scaled, shelled, and creepy critters – not so much – they usually die before they qualify. Research and voluminous experience contained in this response are reported by “Drs” Chablis and Elbe.
Some pets are not cut out to be treated as humans, you are right, but us doggies are definitely made for it!
Yes, Sparkle and Puffin has had swimming lessons.
Not much on social media…but Mom has been wondering how to make us “talk” on FB
Mom needs to set-up our video camera before she goes on vacay in a month
Puffin and I have a pet sitter coming to stay with us while Mom is gone. I have had my pet sitter stay with me previously.
We both have All Safe Autobahn Approved seat belts in the car, and I wore it all the way to Atlanta and back.
Mom talks to us like we are human, and she puts words in our mouths! XOXO, Sparkle
Our ears get tired out from all the talking Mom does to us. We love being treated like humans. Hope you enjoy your pet sitter!
We all have conversations with Mom – even Clarence the cat, although we wonder if he has much to say other than ‘give me food’. Us boyz are big enough to have car seatbelts. There is a dog booster seat in the backseat for the girls. None of us have been to DoggyDaycare – it sounds like fun; although we do have a pet sitter check on us the rare occasion when Mom is gone for days – none of us understand why she would do that – and we like that she usually brings us gifts when she gets back (guess that makes her feel better).
Daycare isn’t really a thing we like much, too much chaos, but we do have fun with the pet sitter now and then.
I would say yes and no. We have different food of course, but my cats also sleep in our beds and almost everywhere. Humans don’t sleep on the microwave or dishwasher, so I would rather say does your cat treat you like a cat ? Because our cats are the bosses here !
I think dogs treat humans like dogs a lot, but cats are more fur treating humans as human servants.
Well of course. Mom and I are BFF! Happy National Dog Day!
I sure hope so! Enjoy our doggy day!
I havenβt actually told the boys they are dogs so… they have social media, a car kennel, Pierre FaceTimes his Mom and Bentley had a tracker but it croaked.
Mom lets us know we are dogs, but her kids and she says that is all that matters.
Well, I suppose we get treated like humans but we sure do get treated like family because we are!
We are definitely all family, and we know you all are too.
I treat my dog and cat MUCH BETTER than I treat humans…seriously
Mom says she treats us better than she treats herself!
Wow! Those are interesting statistics, but I don’t find it surprising – a lot of folks care deeply about their furbabies and make sure they have everything they need. I know y’all are deeply cared for and loved, it shows in the blog posts. Happy National Dog Day!
I hear we are spoiled rotten, but our Mom likes it that way π I bet you kitties are not lacking in anything either.
Our babies are part of the family and need all the attention they want. It’s a good thing. I’m not surprised one bit.
Sorry Iβm so late today. We boated from Rio Vista back to our slip and then drove home.
Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week. β₯
No time limits here on our blog. Having fun is what life is all about!
Thanks for sharing these wonderful facts. We do in our family treat our pets almost like humans. They are part of our family and will always be. Great post. We love reading different things like this everyday.
It’s interesting seeing such stats now and then.
We may not do all the things on that list, but we definitely treat our pets like humans and one of the family! I guess making homemade meals with human ingredients would definitely qualify us too! π
Cooking for us definitely qualifies in my book!
Sweetie treats them like people, i treat them like pets. And i consider seat belts needed not because we are treating them like people, but because any person, pet or object not properly secured can become a projectile in an accident and both cause and be damaged.
You are one of the few that thinks about the projectile thing in the car. That is a huge reason to have pets restrained.
I didnβt know that swimming lessons for dogs exist!!!! Hachi needs them! I think that answers your question!
We all learned to swim on our own until Olivia. Mom wanted her to learn about pools at an early age because we all are afraid of pools, so she had two lessons. Pools are very different from natural bodies of water and lots of dogs are afraid of them.
Ha!! YES! Definitely. We have a sitter and Chester goes to day care! And well right now we are sleeping on momβs bed!!! Years ago mom visited some friends of friends and their dogs were in the garage and the backyard! They werenβt allowed in the house !?!? Mom asked if they could come in and she was told βoh no they canβt come in hereβtheyβre dogs!β She was so sad and never forgot that. Awful! Awful! We love how we are treated even if some folks think we are spoiled. Great post!!! your friend Lilly
My mom feels the same way. We are her babies with fur, spoiled, and she loves it that way. It is sad when dogs are treated like animals, but sometimes, like on farms and stuff they really are working animals with jobs to do, and they no nothing else. As long as they have a home they will be good, but we love our cushy life.
Well of course I do, each and every one of them.
We sure can tell too. Especially with all the stuff you set up for your puppies.
My dogs are part of my family <3
That is how it is at our house too.
Ducky, Shadow, Callie, and Kissy have always been – and will always be – family. They didn’t get swimming lessons, they didn’t/don’t have their own social media profiles, fitness trackers, or video phone calls; but Kissy is the only one who didn’t have a seat belt – they didn’t exist back then that I know of – or a pet sitter/doggy daycare at some point in her life. (My neighbor or father always took care of her for me.) And I’ve been cooking for Ducky since right after Shadow passed (when I ran out of the last order of food from The Farmer’s Dog).
We know you are an awesome dog mom. There are lots of ways to treat us like humans, not just the things in the survey.
Really, the only one of those we do is the social media – we have so many people here that we don’t get boarded and momma taught me to swim herself (well, snoopervised me). But I do have way more clothes and toys than most kids, so in some ways I’m treated like a human.
I think you guys get lots of human treatment π
Our pets are members of our family.
That is how it should be we think.
Yes and no. We love our Kimmy dog and I recently started a blog for her: http://www.pawsitivelykimmy.com where she writes to her baby brother daily about their adventures. β€οΈ
